By six-thirty, the room of requirement started to fill up, and Matt and Draco left the stage, waiting beside it. At a quarter till seven, Ginny took the stage, stepping up to the microphone to address the crowd.

“Alright, listen up, everybody!” she called. The conversation and laughter ceased as everyone turned their attention to her. “We just got word from Ron that Hermione is on her way!” Cheers went up around the room and Ginny had to raise her hand to quiet everyone down. “Our plan has worked so far, and Hermione doesn’t have a clue! When she gets here, everybody yell surprise, okay? We want to make this a night she’ll remember for the rest of her life!”

There were cheers of agreement and scatter applause as Ginny stepped down. The room quieted after that as everyone turned to the door, waiting for Hermione’s arrival. Draco stood with his heart racing wildly as he waited for the door to open. He felt a hand on his shoulder, and turned to look at Matt standing by his side. The drummer grinned and turned back to the door.

It was a few moments longer before the door finally opened. Shouts of ‘surprise’ filled the room as Hermione entered, both hands clasped over her mouth. Ron entered behind her, grinning widely. Harry and Ginny pushed their way to the front of the crowd to hug their friend. By this time, Hermione was crying and smiling brightly at her friends.

Draco had never though she looked more beautiful than in that moment. She seemed so incredibly happy, her eyes shining bright as she moved to hug everyone around her. He wanted so desperately to rush up there, tell her it was him, and kiss her right there in front of everyone. But he couldn’t, and knew that. They’d worked to hard to get here, and he wasn’t going to blow what was most likely his last chance to apologize for what he’d done. No, he would sit back and wait, biding his time until the opportunity arose.

Ginny approached them at that moment, and Draco was forced to tear his eyes away from the girl of his dreams.

“You boys ready?” she asked. Matt grinned and clapped Draco hard on the back.

“Yeah, let’s rock, mates!” he said. Ginny grinned and stepped onto the stage, heading for the microphone. “This is it, Drake!” Matt whispered excitedly. A nervous flutter went through Draco’s stomach at that moment. He took a few deep breaths in an attempt to calm down before he launched himself into a panic attack.

“Alright, everybody!” Ginny began, grinning out over the crowd. “We’ve got a special treat for you tonight! Harry and I spent the last three weeks looking for entertainment for this party, and we’ve found something you’re really gonna love. Give it up for Absolution!”

Cheers went up around the room as Matt and Draco took the stage. Matt sat down behind his set, twirling his sticks dramatically in the air while Draco shoulder his guitar and moved to the mic. One look into Hermione’s glittering brown eyes was all he needed to send his nerves flying out the window.

“How you lot doing?” he asked the crowd. Cheers went up again. He grinned. “You ready to rock?” They screamed even louder. He nodded to Matt, who counted off, and then they started to play.

“A chilling silence! A world of violets!” Draco sang, pouring his heart and soul into the music. “My breath materialized again! Immaculate! Inanimate! A comfort cutting time I see….a string of white lights!”

Matt joined him for the chorus. “Forever walking through December!”

“Forever!”

“Forever longing for a sign of life, a bringer of light! Forever wandering together. A world of violets!”

“Ice everlasting! A full moon casting a purple veil enshrouding all! I perambulate, somnambulant! A solace piercing time I see….a string of white lights!”

“Forever walking through December!”

“Forever!”

“Forever longing for a sign of life, a bringer of light! Forever wandering together. A world of violets!”

Matt took over in the background as the drums stilled and Draco played on. “If only for one night…If only for one night…If only for one night, remember.”

Draco took control again. “If only for one night….If only for one night…If only for tonight together!”

They sang together on their last time through the chorus. “Forever walking through December!”

“Forever!”

“Forever longing for a sign of life, a bringer of light! Forever wandering together. A world of violets!”

The last note of the guitar rang out as applause broke out around them. Draco grinned widely and knew without turning around that Matt was doing the same. His heart pounded a little faster as he caught sight of the sparkling smile he received from Hermione.

“Thank you!” he called over the enthusiastic crowd. He turned to nod at Matt, and they started to play. “One two, three!” Draco sang, grinning as he watched the people starting to dance. “A tragedy that’s built on destiny. It left you with everything but blood from the knife that I cut your heart out with. Now relax, close your eyes, what comes next is the surprise. This valentine is doomed. The smell of blood has filled this room. If I could do it all again I would change most every single thing. I would let you—”

Matt joined him. “Kiss me, kill me.”

“Your kiss is torture, but killing me would be too easy. Our tragedy seems to be killing everything it sees. Like death itself. This valentine still looms in the darkest hour, the killing moon. If I could do it all again, I would let you—”

“Kiss me, kill me.”

“You’re kiss is torture, but killing me would be too easy. Kiss me.”

“You’re all I’m wanting.”

“Kill me.”

“The feeling’s haunting.”

“Your kiss is torture, but killing me would be too easy. Kill me would be too easy. Your eyes unwind the tragedy of our lives. My eyes went blind. Believe when I say Hell burns bright.”

“When this night dies, Hell burns bright. Kiss me, kill me.”

“Your kiss is torture, but killing me would be too easy. Kiss me.”

“You’re all I’m wanting.”

“Kill me.”

“The feeling’s haunting.”

“Your kiss is torture, but killing me would be too easy. Kiss me.”

“You’re all I’m wanting.”

“Kill me.”

“The feeling’s haunting.”

“Your kiss is torture, but killing me would be too easy. Killing me would be too easy. Too easy, too easy, too easy, too easy.”

The roaring of the crowd filled the room as Draco conjured himself a glass of water and drank deeply before setting it down next to the mic stand. “This song,” he said, “was written by both me and my friend back there. It’s the first song we’ve written together in a very, very long time, so go easy on us.” He grinned at the cheers and scattered applause, and started to play. Matt joined in after a moment with a steady beat on the snare.

“I took a walk around the world to ease my troubled mind,” Matt sang, taking over lead vocals. “I left my body somewhere in the sands of time. I watched the world float to the dark side of the moon. I feel there is nothing I can do, yeah.” He nodded to Draco, who took over the lead again.

“I watched the world float to the dark side of the moon. After all I knew it had to be something to do with you. I really don’t mind what happens now and then, as long as you’ll be my friend at the end.”

They joined up for the chorus, their voices ringing out in perfect harmony. “If I go crazy then will you still call me superman? If I’m alive and well, will you be there holding my hand? I’ll keep you by my side with my superhuman might. Kryptonite!”

“You called me strong, you called me weak, but still your secrets I will keep. You took for granted all the times I never let you down. You stumbled in and bumped your head, if not for me then you’d be dead. I picked you up and set you back on solid ground.”

“If go crazy then will you still call me superman? If I’m alive and well, will you be there holding my hand? I’ll keep you by my side with my superhuman might. Kryptonite!” Draco ended with a long guitar solo, drawing loud cheers and applause from the surrounding crowd. There was a moment’s pause for them to catch their breath before Draco nodded, Matt counted off, and they started again.

“To every broken heart in here,” Draco sang, looking out over the dancing crowd around them. “Love was once a part, but now it’s disappeared. She told me that it’s all a part of the choices that you’re making. Even when you think you’re right, you have to give to take.”

Matt joined in. “But there’s still tomorrow, forget the sorrow, and I can be on the last train home. Watch it pass the day as it fades away. No more time to care. No more time today. But we sing.”

“If we’re going nowhere.”

“Yeah we sing.”

“If it’s not enough.”

“And we sing.”

“Sing without a reason to ever fall in love. I wonder if you’re listening, picking up on the signals sent back from within. Sometimes it feels like I don’t really know what’s going on. Time and time again it seems like everything is wrong in here.”

“But there’s still tomorrow, forget the sorrow, and I can be on the last train home. Watch it pass the day as it fades away. No more time to care, no more time today. But we sing.”

“If we’re going nowhere.”

“Yeah we sing.”

“If it’s not enough.”

“And we sing.”

“Sing without a reason to ever fall in love.”

“Well we sing if we’re going nowhere. Yeah we sing if it’s not enough. And we sing, sing without a reason to ever fall in love. But we sing.”

“If we’re going nowhere.”

“Yeah we sing.”

“If it’s not enough.”

“And we sing.”

“Sing without a reason to never fall in love.

“To never fall in love again.”

The crowd roared, filling the room with applause as the boys took a bow. Draco stepped up to the mic, grinning widely. “We’re gonna take a short break, and we’ll be back ASAP!”

Draco set his guitar on its stand offstage and followed Matt as they pushed their way through the crowd and out into the hall. They hurried down the hall and into the boys’ lavatory. Draco was still grinning as he watched his reflection change back to the familiar blonde hair and silver eyes that were his trademark.

“That was brilliant, mate!” Matt exclaimed, clapping Draco on the back. “Absolutely brilliant.”

“Did you see her face?” Draco asked, his eyes glowing as he remembered the way Hermione had looked. “She was so…so…”

“Thrilled?”

“Yeah.”

“And it’s all because of you, mate.”

“I wouldn’t go that far.”

“Come on, let’s get back out there. I’m ready for round two!” Draco nodded and pulled out his wand, restoring his disguise. He cast the final charm, and felt an odd pulse of magic course through him. “What the bloody hell was that?” Matt exclaimed, having felt the pulse as well.

“I don’t know,” Draco answered, looking into the mirror again. “Matt…are you sure the spell can be redone so quickly?”

“Yeah, yeah. It’ll be fine, Drake! Let’s go!” And with that, he pulled his friend from the room.

* * *

Before he knew it, Draco was back up on the stage, greeting his audience, and striking up the first note of the next song.

“Somewhere there’s speaking, it’s already coming in,” he sang, his eyes locking on Hermione, swaying to the rhythm in the crowd. “Oh, and it’s rising at the back of your mind. You never could get it, unless you were fed it. Now you’re here and you don’t know why. But under skinned knees and the skid marks, past the places where you used to learn. You howl and listen, listen and wait for the echoes of angels who won’t return.”

Matt joined him for the chorus. “He’s everything you want. He’s everything you need. He is everything inside of you that you wish you could be. He says all the right things at exactly the right time, but he means nothing to you and you don’t know why.”

“You’re waiting for someone to put you together. You’re waiting for someone to push you away. There’s always another wound to discover. There’s always something more you wish he’d say.”

“He is everything you want. He is everything you need. He is everything inside of you that you wish you could be. He says all the right things at exactly the right time, but he means nothing to you and you don’t know why. But you’ll just sit tight and watch it unwind. It’s only what you’re asking for. And you’ll be just fine with all of your time. It’s only what you’re waiting for.”

“Out of the island, into the highway, past the places where you might have turned. You never did notice, but you still hide away the anger of angels who won’t return.”

“He is everything you want. He is everything you need. He is everything inside of you that you wish you could be. He says all the right things at exactly the right time, but he means nothing to you and you don’t know why.”

“I am everything you want! I am everything you need! I am everything inside of you that you wish you could be. I say all the right things at exactly the right time, but I mean nothing to you and I don’t know why.” Applause broke out, but Draco didn’t wait for it to end. He nodded to Matt, who immediately started to play again with a faster beat.

“So 1, 2, 3, take my hand and come with me because you look so fine and I really wanna make you mine!” Draco watched as they all started to dance again. “I said you look so fine that I really wanna make you mine. Oh, 4, 5, 6, c’mon and get your kicks. Now you don’t need that money when you look like that, do ya honey? Big black boots, long brown hair. She’s so sweet with her get back stare!”

Matt joined him. “Well I could see you home with me, but you were with another man, yeah! I know we ain’t got much to say before I let you get away, yeah!”

“I said are you gonna be my girl?” Draco grinned. “1, 2, 3, take my hand and come with me because you look so fine and I really wanna make you mine!” Draco watched as they all started to dance again. “I said you look so fine that I really wanna make you mine. Oh, 4, 5, 6, c’mon and get your kicks. Now you don’t need that money with a face like that, do ya? Big black boots, long brown hair. She’s so sweet with her get back stare!”

“Well I could see you home with me, but you were with another man, yeah! I know we ain’t got much to say before I let you get away, yeah!”

“I said are you gonna be my girl?”

“Well I could see you home with me, but you were with another man, yeah! I know we ain’t got much to say before I let you get away, yeah!”

“I said are you gonna be my girl?” Cheers went up through the crowd, and Draco conjured himself a glass of water before stepping back up to the mic. “We’re gonna slow it down a little bit,” he said. He started to play, slowly, remembering the way he had felt when he’d written the lyrics. And then his eyes locked on Hermione once more. “Princess, you contemplate your fate for hours locked inside the tallest tower where you stay. Princess, you wear a crown that’s made of flowers waiting for someone to save you each and every single day.”

“I took a chance and I’ll try my best to blow it, then make amends when it’s way too late to fix this. Take a breath of the heavy air and try my best to just pretend there’s no one there. Shut them out again, I’m trying not to miss you, and busy looking for another place to run to. Rock bottom isn’t very far because all they are are broken dreams and shattered hearts.”

“Princess, you’re beautiful—you know you are—as legends say it from afar. So come over to your window and you’ll see me standing on the ground below, waiting for a chance to ride away so we can take all of this in our past and put it all behind our backs and go.”

Draco was just starting his guitar solo when the pain hit. It sliced through him like a hot knife, burning through his veins. He stopped playing and dropped to his knees, letting his guitar fall from his hands. He shut his eyes tight against the burn, barely noticing when Matt stopped playing, too. He heard the shouts of alarm, and the footsteps on the stage as people rushed to him. And then Matt was at his side, shaking him worriedly.

“Mate, you alright?” he asked, shaking him harder. “Draco!”

Draco opened his eyes, looking up into the familiar face of his best friend. Wait… Matt’s disguise was gone. With a jolt of horror, Draco lifted a hand to his hair. It was short again. His worst fear had become a reality—the spell had worn off while they were on stage.

“Drake, are you okay?”

He nodded. “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.” He looked around. Luna was standing at the edge of the stage, her eyes full of worry. Neville was beside him, too, looking nervous. It didn’t take much to understand why. Harry and Ron were standing on the other side of him, and he could practically feel their anger radiating from them in waves.

“What the bloody hell is going on here?” Ron exclaimed, his eyes not leaving Draco. “What’s that git doing here?!” He turned to Harry and Ginny. “You let him play?!”

“We didn’t know it was him!” Ginny exclaimed. “They were disguised when they auditioned.”

Draco and Matt watched the argument before them in terror. Matt leaned over to whisper in Draco’s ear. “I think that’s our cue to leave, mate.” He helped Draco up from the stage and they descended into the crowd, who parted to let them through. The boys could feel their heated glares on their backs. Draco took one last look back, and the last thing he saw before the door closed was the blank look on Hermione’s face.

* * *

“Well that didn’t go so well,” Matt said as they moved down the corridor. Draco stayed silent, the image of Hermione frozen in his mind. “Did you see the look on Weasley’s face? I thought he was gonna murder you for a second there.”

“We have to go back,” Draco said suddenly. Matt turned, realizing his friend had stopped a few paces back. He looked at him quizzically.

“What?”

“We have to go back, Matt.”

“Are you insane? They’ll have both our heads if we show back up.”

“I didn’t apologize. I have to go back.” He turned and headed back towards the room of requirement.

“You know, I think this whole apology thing has gotten to you, mate.” He watched Draco walk away for a split second before running after him, trying to block his path. “You’ve gotta be joking, Draco! Potter and Weasley will kill you if you so much as show your face!”

“I don’t care, Matt! Hermione has to hear that song!” And with that, he side-stepped Matt and hurried on to the door.

He stopped before it, taking a deep breath before opening it and stepping back into the room to face the crowd. A few people turned and looked at him, amazed he had the courage (or perhaps the stupidity) to come back. Draco ignored them, his eyes fixed on the stage—and the piano that still stood upon it. Weasley didn’t catch him until he was at the base of the stairs.

“What the bloody hell do you think you’re doing back here, Malfoy?!” the redhead hissed, grasping Draco’s arm roughly. Draco shrugged away from him, climbing the stairs and moving straight to the piano. He stared down at it, running his fingers over the shining white keys. He took another deep breath before striking the first chord. And he began to sing…

“I dreamed I was missing, you were so scared. But no one would listen ‘cause no one else cared.” The crowd was starting to turn to him, and Harry had joined Ron at the stairs. “After my dreaming I woke with this fear—what am I leaving when I’m done here?”

Hermione was watching from the back of the room, her heart racing quickly. She knew these words. She’d read them before. This was the song—the one he’d never finished. Against her own will, tears started to roll down her cheeks. Matt watched from the doorway, shaking his head. ‘At least they haven’t killed him yet,’ he thought.

“So if you’re asking me I want you to know,” Draco sang on. “When my time comes forget the wrong that I’ve done; help me leave behind some reasons to be missed. Don’t resent me, and when you’re feeling empty keep me in your memory. Leave out all the rest. Leave out all the rest.” His eyes closed as he poured his very soul into his song. He had to show her. He had to make her see how much he still cared.

Hermione’s eyes moved to the side of the stage where Harry and Ron were arguing. She watched as Ron gestured angrily at Draco and Harry nodded. ‘They’re going to hurt him,’ she thought. She began to push her way through the crowd, desperately trying to reach the boys before they made a move.

“Don’t be afraid. I’ve taken my beatings; I’ve shared what I’ve made.” Draco’s words flowed out over the silent crowd as they stared in awe. “I’m strong on the surface, not all the way through. I’ve never been perfect, but neither have you. So if you’re asking me I want you to know.”

Hermione reached the side of the stage just as Harry was climbing the steps. She grabbed his arm quickly, and he turned to face her. Seeing her tears, he descended quickly to her side.

“’Mione, what’s wrong?” he asked worriedly. She shook her head and fought for words.

“Don’t hurt him,” she choked.

“What?”

“What’s she on about?” Ron asked.

“Don’t hurt him,” Hermione repeated. “Please, you have to promise me! Let him finish!”

“When my time comes forget the wrong that I’ve done; help me leave behind some reasons to be missed. Don’t resent me, and when you’re feeling empty keep me in your memory. Leave out all the rest, leave out all the rest.”

“You have to promise me, Harry!” Hermione begged, her eyes pleading with him. “Please!”

“Alright, I promise!” Harry replied, staring at his friend in confused wonder. She turned away from him, her eyes landing on Draco. And he sang on…

“Forgetting all the hurt inside you’ve learned to hide so well. Pretending someone else can come and save me from myself. I can’t be who you are. When my time comes forget the wrong that I’ve done; help me leave behind some reasons to be missed. Don’t resent me, and when you’re feeling empty keep me in your memory. Leave out all the rest, leave out all the rest.” He looked right at her, their eyes meeting as he sang the last few lines. “Forgetting all the hurt inside you’ve learned to hide so well. Pretending someone else can come and save me from myself. I can’t be who you are. I can’t be who you are.”

The audience was silent as Hermione climbed the stairs and stopped before Draco, who turned from the piano to face her. She looked into his eyes, almost as if she were searching for something. Whether or not she liked what she saw, Draco couldn’t tell.

“Hermione, I—” he began. Her hand over his lips cut him off and he fell silent.

“Apology accepted,” she whispered. He stared at her for a moment before releasing the breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. She smiled at him and he grinned back at her. He swept her up into a hug and she laughed aloud, wrapping her arms around his neck. And right there in front of everyone—he kissed her.

* * *

Draco sat at the piano, playing a soft melody while Harry, Ginny, Ron, and a few select others cleaned up after the party and Matt packed up their equipment. Hermione came to sit beside him. He stopped playing and looked up at her.

“That’s beautiful,” she said. He smiled.

“Thank you,” he replied. They sat in silence for a few moments. “I wrote a song about you a few weeks ago. Would you like to here it?”

“It’s not going to make me break up with you again, is it?” she asked. He laughed quietly.

“I hope not.” He started to play a soft, sweet melody as he began to sing. “My gift is my song—and this one’s for you. And you can tell everybody that this is your song. It may be quite simple, but now that it’s done I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words how wonderful life is now you’re in the world.” Hermione smiled and blushed, watching his face as he sang to her. “I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss. Well, a few of the verses, well, they’ve got me quite cross. But the sun’s been kind while I wrote this song. It’s for people like you that keep it turned on. So excuse me forgetting but these things I do. You see I’ve forgotten if they’re green or they’re blue. Anyway, the thing is what I really mean yours are the sweetest eyes I’ve ever seen.

“And you can tell everybody that this is your song. It may be quite simple but now that it’s done…I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words how wonderful life is now you’re in the world. Hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words how wonderful life is now you’re in the world.” He let the last note ring and fade as he turned to look at her, pressing a light kiss to her lips. “Better?”

“Mm…yes,” she replied. “Except that my eyes are brown.” She smiled. Draco grinned and pulled her close.

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”
