Chapter 3: As Long As You Love Me
Anna Apparated back to Godric's Hollow later that evening, almost expecting to find it empty. To her great surprise, Lily sat by the kitchen table, her face buried in her hands, as she cried quietly.
"Lily!" Anna gasped, and rushed over to her friend. As soon as she reached Lily, Lily looked up, and wrapped her arms around Anna's waist, almost clinging to her. "Lily..." Anna whispered, brushing her hair carefully. "What's wrong?"
"I...I..." Lily sobbed, shaking her head like a stubborn child. "I lost a... a... a patient today," she managed to choke out, and Anna carefully pulled away from her, trying to get a closer look at her face.
"Aww, Lils..." she said, brushing her tears away. "I'm so sorry."
"It w-was my first p-patient I've lost," Lily sniffled, and shook her head.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Lily shook her head wildly, and sniffled again. After a moment, she nodded once, and Anna helped Lily on her feet, leading her through the rooms to the living room. They sat down on the sofa, Anna's arm wrapped around Lily as the red head curled up against Anna.
"She was only ten, Anna," Lily whispered. "She... she had been hit by an unknown curse... there was... s-so much blood... everywhere. S-she kept calling for her mum, and t-there was nothing we could do to help her."
"That's horrible..." Anna said quietly, brushing Lily's hair gently as she tried not to think how it must have been for poor Lily.
"I couldn't save her!" Lily managed to get out, before she burts into new tears. Anna quickly pulled her closer, hugging her tightly as Lily cried against her shoulder. "I couldn't s-save her!"
"Shh, Lily, shh..." Anna murmured, trying to calm her down. "It's not your fault, you couldn't help her... it's not your fault, honey..."
It felt like hours before Lily calmed down. Anna wasn't sure if she was awake, as she carefully looked down at her. She smiled a little, as she found Lily sleeping quietly, her head rested on Anna's shoulder, and her arms around her neck as if to prevent Anna from leaving.
"Good evening, Potters!" James' voice boomed through the house, and Anna's eyes widened. James stroleld into the living room, grinning. "Where--" he started, but fell silent as he saw Anna and Lily.
"Shh!" Anna hissed, gesturing helplessly towards Lily who muttered in her sleep. "She's sleeping..." she said quietly, as James walked over to them.
"What happened?" he asked, his eyes filled with fear. "Is she hurt?"
"She's fine," Anna whispered. "She just... had a rough day. She lost her first patient..."
James' face was twisted in a pained expression, as he gazed down at Lily. "Oh no..." he said, and kneeled down in front of the sleeping Lily. "Lils..." James whispered, and brushed a red curls from her face.
"Could you...?" Anna started, gesturing to Lily again.
"Oh, of course," James said at once, and helped Anna pull away Lily's arms from around her neck. Anna shifted away, as James sat down, craddling Lily to his chest.
"J-James...?" Lily slurred, and snuggled closer to him. "James..." she said, and sighed happily.
"I'm here, love..." James said, and kissed her forehead. He looked up as Anna tip-toed out of the room. "Hey, Anna?" he called, and Anna looked around. "Thank you..."
Anna smiled to him, and felt a pang of jealousy as she watched them from afar. "No problem."
She quickly rushed away from the living room, bounding up the stairs towards her own room. As she opened the door, she found someone sitting on her bed. She closed the door quickly, and let out a high-picthed squeal, before attacking Alex.
"Whoa!" he chuckled, and caught her. "Why are you so giddy?"
Anna buried her face against his neck, and inhaled deeply. "Just missed you, that's all..."
Alex ran his hands through her hair carefully, before lifting her chin with his thumb, and kissing her. "Missed you too, love..."
Anna leaned in for another kiss, which he eagerly responded to. His forced her mouth open with his tongue, and Anna smiled against his lips, letting out a breathy giggle as Alex slowly leaned back, pulling her with him on the bed. Anna straddled him, molding herself against his body. She shivered slightly, as he ran his hand up and down her back, before carefully sliding under her shirt.
This was usually where Anna would get up, and try to start a small-talk, but not now. Alex pulled away from Anna's lips, and gazed up at her, his brows raised at the look on Anna's face. It was almost like looking up to an angel.
"What did you do today?" he asked gently, his thumb caressing the soft skin.
"I..." Anna started, and kissed him. "... went to look at an apartment..." she murmured, and kissed him again. "... and I didn't like it."
Alex sighed. "Why don't you just move in with me?"
"No," she said after a moment of thinking.
"You don't have to marry me," he said, and grinned.
"It would eventually coem to that," she said and anrrowed her eyes. "Besides, I found a place already..."
"But you said you didn't like the place," he said.
"I didn't," Anna said and smiled. "It's... a different place. I haven't seen it yet, but... I'm moving in with Cat."
"Oh?" Alex said, and sat up with Anna still in his lap.
"Yeah..." she murmured, and played with the top buttons of his shirt.
Alex raised his brows at this, and let out a chuckle before kissing her jaw. "You're adorable when you try to seduce me, but..." he said, and sighed deeply. "But what's the catch?"
Anna glared at him. "What makes you think there's a catch? Can't I just seduce you for fun?"
"Last time you 'seduced me for fun', you wanted a pet dragon," Alex pointed out.
"Well, dragons are rather nice pets, don't you agree?" Anna said innocently, and looked down.
"Yeah, when they're unconscious!" Alex chuckled. "So tell me," he said, tilting Anna's head up so that he could see her eyes. "What's the catch?"
"There... may be... you know... a third person involved," she muttered, frowning.
"Yeah? Well, isn't that a good thing? Lower rent to pay, eh?"
"It's..." Anna started, and sighed. "Fine, the third person is Sirius Black. It's his apartment."
Anna had expected some kind of anger, or fury, so it was quite surprising to see him look so thoughtful. Anna carefully raised her brows at him, trying to read his eyes. "Alex? Honey?"
"Hmm?" he said, looking up at her with a confused expression.
"Did you hear what I said?" she said, touching his cheek gently.
"Of course," he said quietly, frowning at her. "I'm just... worried, that's all..."
"But... why?" Anna asked. "Because I'm moving in with a bloke? Because it's Sirius?"
"Yes," he simply said, looking guilty. "I'm sorry, it's just... weird, that's all..."
"So it's not a jealousy thing, then?" she asked, and watched his blank face. "Because you know better than to be jealous, right? Alex?" Anna said slowly, and arched her brow. "Right, Alex?" she repeated, the corners of her mouth twitching at the blush that slowly rose on his cheeks.
"Do I?" he muttered, and rested his chin on her shoulder, holding her close.
"Oh, please!" Anna giggled, feeling the tight knot in her stomach loosen at the bubbly feeling she got everytime she embarrassed Alex. He was so adorable when he blushed. "You know there's only one bloke I love in the entire world..." she murmured, her fingers playing with his hair.
"Yeah?" Alex said, and pulled away to look at her.
"Yeah," Anna said promptly, and grinned. "His name is Bob."
Alex let out a low growl, before laughing at Anna's joke. Anna kissed him softly, before letting out a shriek as he rolled her around, kissing down her neck. It tickled her, and she couldn't help but laugh.
They fooled around for another ten minutes, until the playful kiss turned deeper, and more intense. Anna arched her back to get closer to Alex, letting out a small moan as his hand slid under her shirt, caressing her breast. She pulled slightly away, her breath caught in her throat.
"Sorry," Alex whispered against her lips, as he slowly pulled his hand away.
"No, wait..." Anna whispered back, and took his hand. She guided it back to her breasts, her eyes locked with Alex's the entire time. She smiled the crooked smile she was used to see on Alex's face, and kissed him softly.
"What's this?" Alex chuckled against her lips. "Anna..." he murmured, his fingers knotted in her hair.
"Babysteps," Anna said with a smile, as he pulled away to let her breathe. "Babysteps..."
The following morning, Anna woke up with her back clammy of sweat. She frowned, before smiling widely. She stretched under the covers, before carefully turning around to lie on her back. She watched the sleeping Alex for a few minutes, her lips burning to kiss those soft lips. She let out a silent giggle, as Alex muttered in his sleep, something about Snitches. She leaned closer to him, careful not to wake him, and kissed him softly. She knew he loved to wake up that way, and to be honest, Anna didn't mind it much either.
"Baby..." she murmured, as Alex smiled in his sleep. "Wake up..." she whispered, nudging her nose with his.
"Not yet, honey..." he muttered, pulling her closer against his bare chest.
"Yes, now..." Anna giggled, trying to squirm away from his iron embrace. "Come on now, love," she said, and kissed his jaw, her lips lingering there for a moment.
Most of the mornings were like this; Anna woke up first, and spent the following ten to fifteen minutes trying to get Alex up. This only happened, if Alex had stayed the night instead of going home to his parents' house. Anna was aware of Mrs Volchok's nerves (even if she had not met her yet), and how much she frowned upon her son's 'reckless actions' by staying the night at a girl's place who wasn't even his fiancé. Of course Alex had tried to assure her that all they did was sleep, which was the truth. If there was something Anna had made very clear of, it was the fine line which they wouldn't cross just yet, meaning sex.
Of course, when Alex had found out Anna was still a virgin, he had literally spent an hour trying to understand how it was possible. He had stammered and blushed, tried to go through all of their intimate moments, which could have led to so many other things if they hadn't been interrupted every time.
This had only made Anna love him even more.
Then, of course, like every morning, would come the sound of James Potter coming up the stairs.
"James' coming!" Anna hissed, and quickly ushered Alex from the bed. "Hurry up!" she pleaded, as he quickly pulled the shirt on, and jumped into his jeans. Alex took his shoes and other belongings, as he hurried to the window, which Anna had already opened for him. As soon as he was out through the window, he grinned to Anna and kissed her deeply. Anna melted, as she sighed against his lips. The sound of James' knocking on the door tore her away from the kiss, and she pushed Alex away from the window, smiling widely at him. "Go!" she whispered, as he threw the shoes on the ground, and started to climb down the wall.
"I love you!" he said, before Anna closed the window.
Anna giggled, and shut the window, just when James entered the room with narrowed eyes. Anna held her breath, and couldn't remember when she ahd felt so guilty before. She watched as James circled her room, like a typical father searching for drugs or alcohol would do. Anna rolled her eyes dramatically, as James fell on the floor, and searched under the bed.
"He's not there," Anna said firmly, as she pulled on her fluffy robes. "Get over it, Potter..."
"You can never be too sure!" James called after her, as Anna made it downstairs.
"G'morning, Lils," Anna said through the yawn, as she arrived to the kitchen, where Lily was making pancakes.
"Morning," Lily mused, and the corners of her mouth twitched slightly, as she quickly waved her wand, and a plate with warm pancakes flew in front of Anna on the table, with a glass of orange juice. "How was your, erm, morning?"
Anna's glass of orange juice froze half-way to her lips, as she gazed at Lily, who leaned against the counter with her arms crossed. She had never looked more smug than she did now, and it made Anna nervous.
"Um, it was great," she mustered out, and took a sip from her glass. "James did his usual Saturday morning investigation, as expected."
"Of course," Lily said, and continued to stare at Anna as she ate.
"Okay, are you going to stare at me eating all morning, Lily?" Anna demanded, when Lily's eyes didn't move away from her.
"When exactly did you plan on telling me?" Lily said, and pouted.
"About what?" Anna said innocently.
"About Alexei Volchok spending the night in your room - again!"
Anna gasped, her face pulled in a look of pure horror. She had never even suspected that Lily had known, or even had any suspicions. James had started to check her rooms every Saturday and Sunday morning ever since he had walked in on Anna and Alex snogging on the bed.
But Lily... no, Anna had had no idea.
"W-what?" Anna said sharply, and quickly took another sip from her glass. "I don't know what you mean."
"Then why the hell did I see someone who looked awfully much like Alex fall outside of the kitchen window?" Lily asked, and raised her eyebrows at Anna's stunned face. "Well?" she pressed on, and took her cup of coffee with her to the kitchen table.
"I... I..." Anna stuttered, staring at Lily in pure horror. What would she tell her!?
As if the morning couldn't get any worse, James bounded into the kitchen with a manic look in his eyes. They both glanced at James with equally startled faces, as he looked wildly around the room for something - more specifically, for Alexei Volchok.
Anna would have found it all rather amusing, but not on this particular morning. It was bad enough to know that she was going to move in with Sirius Black, the last person she wanted to have anything to do with.
"You okay there, love?" Lily asked cheerfully, and gave Anna a menacing look.
Anna shook her head frantically, as James started to rummage the cupboards - this was beyond ridiculous!
"Don't you dare!" Anna hissed to Lily, clutching her glass tightly between her hands.
"Watch me!" Lily responded, and wiggled her brows in a very familiar Marauder-ish way.
"Yeah, Lils?" James said, and scratched his jaw thoughtfully. "If you were a bloke, where would you hide, if a handsome, but very intimidating looking fella would come to look for you?"
Lily gave Anna another smug grin, watching Anna crumble in front of her.
"Ugh!" Anna huffed, and stood up. "Fine! I'll go shopping with you!" she said, giving her a meaningful look. This was their code for girl talk ever since James had started to get paranoid, and never got the hint to leave them alone for a few minutes.
"I'm not done yet!" James complained, giving Lily a frustrated look.
"You've ruined Lily Evans!" Anna growled at him, jabbing his chest with her finger.
James' confused face slowly twisted in an arrogant grin, as he ran his hand through his hair, trying to dazzle Anna with no success. "Aww, admit it - I'm pretty awesome!"
"Ugh!" Anna said again, and escaped the kitchen quickly. "Piss off, Potter!"
"Thank you, dear," James and Lily both called after her, trying to fight the laughter bubbling inside of them as Anna stormed up the stairs.
"So," Lily started, and slid down from the high chair. "You were asking me something..." she hinted, and raised her brows at him, as she pulled James closer by his untied tie.
"Rhetorically speaking, of course," James said, and grinned. "Where would you hide if a handsome bloke would come and look for you?"
"Does the handsome bloke sport dark hair, glasses and the most amazing hazel eyes?" Lily murmured, smiling up at him.
"Maybe," James responded, and kissed her nose.
"Check under the bed again," Lily said after a moment.
"Love you, Mrs Potter," James whispered, and brushed her red hair behind her ear.
"As I love you, Mr Potter."
