Hermione struggled to open her eyes. The smallest of groans woke Ron, who was asleep in the chair next to her hospital bed.
“Ohh Hermione, you’re awake. Draco said it was touch and go” said Ron, a slight smile creeping over his face. He took his wife’s hand and kissed it. “It’ll be okay”
“What happened?” asked Hermione, and she tried to sit up. A sharp pain shot up from her abdomen. It was much smaller than she had last seen it.
“Ron where’s my baby?”
Ron gripped his wife’s hand, “He is in the intensive care unit”
“I want to see him!” she said, as tears began to stream down her face.
“We can’t” said Ron sighing, “Draco has ordered that only medical staff can go into his room but we can ask more when Draco gets here”
Hermione nodded before turning away to face the window. She heard Ron get up and walk towards the door. Rain trickled down the window, it was the first rain Hermione had seen that summer, a thought suddenly occurred to her.
“What day is it?”
“August fourth, you’ve been asleep since he was born” said Ron sounding rather surprised as he turned round to face his wife.
“When was that?”
A small smile spread across his face. “31st of July”
“The same as Harry, does he know?” asked Hermione, smiling
“Well I was just on my way to send a patronus to Harry and Ginny that you were awake. They’re looking after Rose”
Hermione’s smile faltered. What kind of mother doesn’t even ask about their other child?
She heard the door click. Ron was gone and she was alone with her thoughts. What about Ginny? She is also heavily pregnant and has been looking after 3 toddlers under the age of three. Hermione thought of how she struggled to look after one child and Ginny was younger than her. Hermione must be a bad mother she thought.
She saw one the back of the door was the long cloak that se had worn when she was admitted. Hermione swung her legs over the side of the bed and felt her feet touch the cold, clean hospital floor beneath her. As she put her full weight on her feet, the pain from the birth of her son shot up through her body causing her to wince. She unhooked the cloak and draped it over herself covering the thin hospital gown.
She opened the door, the strong smell of disinfectant hitting her, she peered down the hallway a medic witch station. She stuck her head out a bit further…it was empty. Luckily she was in the end room and there was no need to look the other way. The lift was just before the Medic witch station and even then she would be in danger of being caught from people coming in the lift or as she waited for it. She pressed the large red button and luckily for her it was on that floor and it was empty.
Hermione walked casually past reception, only ducking her head slightly when she thought she saw red hair. Her cloak had been buttoned up and her hair tidied by her wand which had been in the pocket of her cloak.
She pushed open the door into the Muggle Street, and pulled the hood of the cloak over her head. She wasn’t sure where she was going but she knew who she had to see.
Ron walked to the intensive care unit, he knew he should have gone straight back to Hermione after he sent the patronus but he had to see his son, a son he thought a mini version of himself. He peered through the thick glass and looked upon the incubator. His little boy already had signs of wildly red hair like his and his siblings but his face was all Hermione.
“He is looking a lot better today”
Draco’s cold but assuring voice brought Ron back to reality. “That’s great, how long will he have to stay here?”
“Well we’d like to keep them both in for a little longer just for observation”
“Oh okay” said Ron
“Come lets go speak to Hermione and explain everything, a medic witch told me she was awake”
The two once enemies walked side by side down the corridor. Waiting at the medic witch station was Harry and Ginny. Before Ron could open his mouth,
“Rose is at mums with the boys and she hasn’t been any trouble at all. I can’t say the same for my boys”
Ron reached out and hugged his little sister tightly. This was hard as he tried not to squish her very pregnant belly.
“Mrs Potter, you should be on bed rest” said Draco in his doctor tone.
“Come off it Draco, I only started liking you two years ago don’t make me hate you again” said Ginny sternly, “I’m only seven months pregnant”
“Yes but with your third child and you had previous complications, so as your doctor I’m obligated to advise you to spend as much time laying down.” Said Draco his own voice overpowering Ginny’s, “But as a friend I’m going to advise you to see Hermione” Draco smiled and patted Harry on the back.
The two of them started walking down the hall, whilst Ron draped his arm around Ginny and they walked at a slower pace. Just as Ron was about to ask what Rose had been getting up to, a squeak on the shiny hospital floor, made him look up. Draco was standing outside Hermione’s room. Ron realised it must have been Draco’s sensible trainers that made the noise.
“What’s going on? Is Hermione okay?” asked Ron, running up to Draco
“No, I don’t know how Hermione is. She’s gone!”
“Gone? What do you mean gone? Did you move her to another ward or something?” said Ron, babbling slightly
“No” replied Draco, “And the medic witches say they haven’t seen her since this morning”
Ron who was close to tears now ran his hands through his hair, “How can you lose a patient? What kind of hospital is this?”
“This has never happened before” said an unfamiliar voice. Ron turned and noticed two more healers and a medic witch were now informed on the situation. The healer that hadn’t spoken was having a heated argument with the medic witch.
“Okay lets everyone calm down. Look if Hermione has left the hospital, I doubt it she is going to get very far” said Harry, calming the situation, “Ron, me and you will go out and look for her between the two of us we should be able to figure It out. Ginny you stay here and get Aurora or Angelina here somehow. Draco you try and figure out what happened. We’ll be back when we get back”
“Okay” said Ron, agreeing to the plan for everyone. Harry kissed Ginny quickly, patted Draco on the back, and then with Ron headed for the apparition point.
Hermione knocked on the door of number 16. The door was covered in little droplets of water from the rain, which had gone off when Hermione apparated to this point.
The door opened and a very shocked face was on the other side, “Hermione? What are you doing here?”
