Amory ignored the conversation she’d overheard, she figured it wasn’t important and went back on with her normal school life. Days passed, lessons came and went, Amory was having the best year ever. She was, as always, at the top of the class in everything and this year she had an amazing (but still secret) boyfriend. They had both agreed it would be better if only they knew for now and they were happy with it that way. They’d go throughout the day, having fun just as they used to when they were just friends, then after dinner, they would spend time alone, as a couple, but unlike her parents, Amory never let it get past a kiss, she didn’t want to ruin things, she liked it the way it was.
September quickly turned to October and then November. Beep beep beep. The alarm woke Amory for breakfast. She changed into her robes and went into the Gryffindor common room, to meet Lucas and go down to the hall, but unusually he wasn’t there. Amory shrugged this off, thinking that he could have gone to the library or left early for breakfast. She carried on down to the Great Hall, expecting to meet him in there. As she walked in, she scanned the room; she couldn’t see him, so she sat next to her best friend, Gabby and began to eat. Amory became slightly alarmed when at the end of breakfast; she still had not seen her boyfriend. She tried her best not to worry, but thoughts were nagging at the back of her mind. Either way, she didn’t have time to worry; she had to go to her first lesson, which was Defence Against the Dark Arts, with Harry teaching. Amory figured that as Head Master he would know where Lucas was and intended to ask.
She got to the room first after rushing out of the hall to ensure she had time to speak to Harry. Entering the room she saw him standing behind his desk reading some parchment. He still had messy dark hair and still wore the same type of glasses. These had become his trademark, along with the scar of course, which was still prominent. He looked just as he did when he was in school; the years had been very kind to him.
“Harry...”
“Yes Amory”, he replied.
“Do you have any idea where Lucas is, it’s just, he wasn’t in breakfast”.
“Erm, as far as I know, he is in school somewhere. Maybe he had to go see another professor I wouldn’t worry about it”.
“Oh thanks”, Amory said, only slightly reassured.
She sat in her seat and waited for the other pupils to arrive, nervously glancing at the door, waiting for him to arrive. He didn’t.
Before she knew it, it was lunch and still no sign of her secret boyfriend. Every time somebody entered Amory span around in her seat to check the doorway for his presence, every time being disappointed. She sat thinking, when was the point where she should really worry? When has something definitely happened to him? And would that point be too late to save him. Gabby could see she was worried, especially being the one person that knew about her and Lucas.
“Are you okay?” Gabby asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine, why?” Amory grinned through her nerves.
“’Cause I know Lucas isn’t here, and I know nobodies seen him . . .”
“Everything’s fine, he must be catching up on work or something”, Amory cut in.
“I’m sure he is”, Gabby smiled.
Lunch finished and everyone attended their final lessons. The end of the day dragged for what seemed like forever for Amory, the nerves put her off her work and her mother, who taught her Muggle Studies last lesson could sense it.
“Amory, what’s up?” Hermione asked.
“Nothing”, she smiled.
“Really?”
“Nope, I’m fine” Amory gave a forced laugh.
“Okay, I’m here whenever you need me. You can tell me anything you know darling”..
“I know mum”.
Amory left that lesson swiftly in order to avoid any other questioning from her mother. She ran straight up to the common room. As she stepped inside she saw a person sitting on the sofa, with the dark messy hair that could only belong to one person.
“Lucas! Where have you been!” Amory exclaimed.
She ran and jumped on the sofa next to him.
“Oh, erm, I had to catch up on my, erm, divination work, yeah”, he replied.
“Oh okay”, Amory said leaning in to kiss him.
That one kiss told all. It was not the same. Different. She didn’t feel the usual passion that he put into it, it was almost awkward. She then thought back to his response, he was not excited to see her as usual, he gave minimal answers, and it didn’t seem truthful. He also just stared back at her with a sort of glazed look.
“Lucas, are you okay? You’re not upset with me are you?”
“Oh, erm, no”, was the reply she got.
“Okay you just seem quiet, you sure you don’t wanna talk about anything?” Amory asked again.
“No, I’m just going to go to my room. I’ll see you later”, Lucas said before leaving.
Amory received no kiss, no hug. Something was not right, this was unlike Lucas, he seemed down. He was normally so enthusiastic towards her. Horrible thoughts flew round in her mind. Maybe he doesn’t like me anymore. Maybe it’s because I kept us secret. He must be tired of me.
She felt the tears well up in her eyes as she ran into her room. The one she cared about so dearly, the one she had thought about having a future with, didn’t want her anymore and the fact that he went out of his way to avoid her rubbed salt into the wound. It was unfair; she thought he loved her, she loved him. But it was too late. She climbed into her bed and hid under her blanket to hide the fact that she was crying. The tears were unstoppable. The pain was immense. She would have to speak to him in the morning. She needed to know. Was it was over?
