“What was that?” Peter looked around nervously.
“A slamming compartment door.” Remus chuckled.
“Oh, Jamesie-boy!! Guess who’s shiny red hair I just saw enter into a certain compartment!” Sirius said in a sing-song voice.
“Which compartment? Which one, which one, which one?!?!” James shook him excitedly.
“Not tellin-ow!! Alright, alright, let go of me!!” He said, shaking free from James’ powerful headlock. James crossed his arms, and tapped his foot impatiently.
“That one...” Sirius pointed at a compartment, in which a female silhouette could be seen, and grinned as James hopped merrily towards it. He opened the door, shouting, “I LOVE YOU!!” .
An overjoyed 5th year gaped at him, “Oh my hippogriff!! I love you too James Pot-”
James slammed the door shut. Remus and Peter were on the floor laughing. James turned to Sirius, who gulped at the murderous glare.
“Erm.... wrong one?” Sirius grinned crookedly.
“Wrong one? I’LL GIVE YOU WRONG ONE!!” James shouted, as Sirius turned and ran. James stopped suddenly by a compartment. He peered at a shape, and grinned.
“Waddup?” Peter spoke, failing at his attempt to control the grin. Sirius approached James, cautiously. James nodded towards the door quizzically. Sirius nodded, answering the unspoken question. His friend looked at the door, then back to Sirius, then back at the door. He raised an eyebrow at Sirius, who crossed his heart. James grinned once more, and opened the door. In the compartment stood James’ own Lily Evans, Grace White, and a gorgeous girl Sirius swore he had never seen before.
“Hello, my dear Lilykins! Miss me?” James grinned at the pretty red haired girl, “Care to introduce us to your friend?” He looked at the new girl, who smiled shyly.
“Evans! Wassup? Poor Prongsie really missed you this summer.” I brought my hand to my head dramatically, “Cried every night when he thought about you-Ouch!! What was that for?” Sirius glanced reproachfully at James, and then grinned, “Just telling the truth, mate. Sooo, who might you be?” He stepped to the girl’s side, who smiled.
“Ana Garrett. Hey.” She grinned. Hot, hot, hot, Sirius thought, grinning back.
“Enchanté," I grinned as I bowed, “I’m Sirius, no joke, and these losers...” He signalled to his friends,” “are my friends. This, love-sick boy is James Potter, and unfortunately he has gone, once again, into an Evans only mode.” He shrugged, and Ana giggled, “Don’t worry too much; he’ll be back dating shortly-ow!” Sirius rubbed his arm and stuck his tongue out at James.
“This little one is Pete, who still thinks the girls are angry at him from last year’s harmless end of year prank.” Sirius shook his head.
“And he’s not that far off!” Lily glared at Sirius.
“Excuse me Evans, but I haven’t finished yet-ouch!! What did I do now?” he glared at James, who glared back.
“I’m Remus Lupin, Gryffindor prefect. Ignore the other two. Hello, Lily.” He said, nodding towards Lily. Ana shook hands, and smiled.
“Hey,” she said, a sudden crash made them turn to James and Sirius, the latter who had just been pushed into the door.
“Oh, you get used to them after a while.” Remus chuckled, turning back to the new girl.
“Together, we form the Marauders, officially the most popular group in school!!” Sirius put his arm on Ana’s shoulder, and grinned from ear to ear, ignoring Lily’s muttering of “Says who?” James stood up from him previous position on the floor.
“Care to join us in our compartment? I’m sure we can make space for all you pretty ladies.” Ana grinned even wider, happy with her new friends, Grace blushed at the comment, and Lily rolled her eyes.
“No, Black. We’ve already got a compartment to ourselves.” Lily took Ana’s bag from the seat, where it had been left, and marched out. Ana looked at her, amused, and laughed. Grace linked arms with her, and saying goodbye to the boys, they started to walk behind Lily.
The girls turned round to face Sirius, who called out to them, “If you change your mind, we’ll be in compartment at the end of the train!!” He grinned, "and, Ana?!?” She smiled, “You’re in Gryffindor, right?” He asked hopefully.
“Uh, yup!?” She turned to Grace, who answered a quiet question, waved again at the boys, and walked away.
“Interesting girl…”Sirius pondered, adding her to the list of Date-able Girls.
“Ahem, ahem,” Sirius turned with a raised eyebrow towards James, who grinned wickedly, “2 galleons that I’ll get a date with Lily Evans before you get a date with the Gryffindor newbie.”
Sirius took his hand and shook it, “Ha-ha!! You’re on!!!” Sirius grinned darkly.
“And now...” James took his wand out, “I kill you.”
A few spells later, the four Marauders sat in their compartment, James removing the last tentacle from his arm. Sirius and Peter were talking about Quidditch, when Remus suddenly stood.
“I forgot to tell Lily about our first patrol on Wednesday.” He said as he made towards the door. One foot outside, he turned to them, “Any idea where they are?”
“Wanna help me find them?” Remus looked at them expectantly.
“Good idea! Come on, Jamesie-poo. Let’s go find ourselves some girls!”
“Couldn’t you have asked their apartment number while we could see them?” Peter asked, grunting as he stood lazily.
“Lily wouldn’t have told us.” James sighed.
“And we would have missed out in the fun-ness of searching for them.” Sirius ruffled his hair, and strode out.
“But mostly ‘cause Lily wouldn’t have told us.” Remus grinned.
“At least now you know the Marauders,” Grace said, once they’d reached their compartment, “And once the Marauders know you, everybody knows you.” Ana remembered the curious stares from the surrounding compartments as they caught up with Lily.
You can say that again, Ana agreed inwardly.
“So, Ana Garrett, where you from?” Lily asked, making conversation.
“Well, I usually live near London. I just came back from staying at a friend’s house in... Cadiz. It’s in Spain.” She answered their questioning glances.
“Holiday?” Grace asked, curious.
“Um, well, not really. I travel. My parents travel. I don’t usually stay at one place for long.” Ana added, suddenly looking uncomfortable.
“Really?” Grace questioned Ana, amazed, “Who taught you magic if you didn’t go to school?”
“Tutors. And lots of them.” She played with her hair.
“And you travel alone when on hols?” Ana nodded, whilst Grace started daydreaming, “Wish I had that freedom. The places I’d visit, the people I’d meet, the things I’d do...” She drifted off and Lily chuckled from behind her Daily Prophet.
“Yeah, the good all days.” Ana smiled, shaking her head slowly, “But my... parents thought it was about time I settled at a school, so they sent me here.
“Guess you’re stuck with us, then,” Lily put the paper down, “Grace, stop interrogating her, change subject.” Grace looked at her reproachfully.
“Fine, good cop. Give us a subject.” Grace teased. Lily sighed.
“Anything, just stop asking.” Lily put the Daily Prophet down, “Here’s a topic,” she started, pointing at the paper, “Jonathan Hertmoose was caught and locked up in Azkaban for the murder of six muggles. That’ll give you something to think about.”
“Jonathan Hertmoose? Wasn’t he the guy that started the SPCTE?” Ana asked, thoughtful.
“SPCTE?” Grace looked at her, and Ana smiled.
“Society Preventing Cruelty Towards Elves.” Lily chuckled, “He started that organisation fifteen years ago, and got a grand total of 9 members. Him, his wife and children, his parents, and his brothers and sisters. And they joined out of pity.”
“Still, he was a peace maker, so I can’t see why he would murder six muggles” Ana looked out of the window, “Don’t like to think about it, but maybe Lord...” Ana drifted off.
“What, you mean like, Lord Voldemort has something to do with it?” Grace looked at Ana, a worried look on her face, “He’s turning out to be one of the most…successful mass murderers in the whole history of magic.”
“You can say that again...” Ana glared outside darkly, “Bet you it was the imperious curse or something similar... blackmail perhaps...”
“He’s not alone. There was a writer in the Daily Prophet not too long ago, Aidan Doyle. He wrote a report on Lord Voldemort. Said he’s recruiting an army of some sort. Poor Doyle died two days after his report was published.”
“Ugh, eerie.” Grace shivered.
“Time to change subject again! You guys call others by their surname? Weird.” Ana grinned and Lily relaxed, and put the newspaper down.
“Yeah, it’s a Hogwarts magic thing...” Lily tilted her head thoughtfully, “it is kinda weird though.”
“Let’s talk about Ana!” Grace jumped up excitedly, “By the time we reach Hogwarts, we’ll know all your deepest and darkest secrets.” Ana gasped dramatically, thinking that these friends were turning out to be pretty good.
“Watch out, once she gets started... there’s no shutting her up.” Lily said, wondering what sort of questions Grace would ask, and what answers this newly acquired friend might give.
“Question numero uno! We’ll start easy... how many countries have you visited while travelling?” Grace asked.
“Aaah.. oh. I’m not sure.... 35? I can’t name them all, but I’d know where they are on a map.” Actually, I could, you just wouldn’t know them, she thought, smiling.
“35!! That’s cool.” Lily looked at Ana, “How many languages can you speak?”
“A few…” Ana grinned shyly. Grace looked like she was going to push the matter further, when suddenly the door burst open to reveal the Marauders. Lily pulled a serious face, and Grace’s smile widened when she looked at them.
“Go away, Potter.” She said when James slumped down in the seat next to her.
“He hasn’t even had a chance to say anything yet, Lily!” Grace looked at her incredulously.
“No way, Evans. I’m staying right by you. Oh, here’s a question! Wanna go out with me?” James smiled, leaning towards her. Immediately Lily pushed him away.
"Time for some rounds, then.” She said, putting her prefect badge on. She walked out of the room, glaring one last time at James. Remus chuckled, and followed her.
“Sooo, Ana. I hope your new friends have made you feel welcome.” Sirius sat next to her and Peter followed him in, sitting in the opposite corner.
“Made me feel right at home.” Ana looked at Grace and they both smiled.
“Do you think Lily likes me?” James blurted out, staring at the compartment door where Lily had been just a moment ago. Grace laughed, while Ana answered,
“Course she does, she’s probably just playing hard to get.” Grace grinned at him, and James beamed, making Sirius laugh.
“So, what are you ladies doing?” Sirius asked, raising his eyebrow at Ana. Grace’s cheeks turned pink.
“Erm, we where kinda questioning Ana about herself. We didn’t get very far…” Grace looked at Ana and grinned mischievously.
“Interesting. Anything good? For the GAH club, they were asking me stuff just a second ago.”
“ Not yet,” Grace answered, “Still, I’ll find out more soon enough!” Grace grinned again, "I'm gonna turn into your best bud! We'll be BFFL!" Sirius raised an eyebrow at the girl slang, exchanging a glance with James.
A group stopped outside their compartment. Voices could be heard, and both Sirius and James swore. The compartment door burst open, and in front stood a group of Slytherins. The two marauders pulled their wands out and stood up. Peter took his wand out as well, but dropped it in the process and turned bright red as he bent down to pick it up.
Grace rolled her eyes up and whispered something to Ana, who suddenly nodded as if she understood something.
“Get out of my way, Potter; we wouldn’t want you to harm yourself on the first day of school, now, do we?” Lucius Malfoy sneered maliciously, "We're here to talk to the new girl." He looked at Ana slyly, who looked right back, her face blank. Sirius’ eyes flicked to the emerald badge pinned to his gown.
“Prefect, Malfoy? How much did your father have to pay the school to convince them, this time? I shan’t be surprised to see your mother cleaning the toilets in Hog’s head, then.” Sirius spat back, protecting his new, pretty friend. In a flash Malfoy’s wand was pointing at Sirius.
Sirius and Malfoy shouted jinxes at the same time, jets of light flashing out of their wands.
“PROTEGO!!” A blue shield appeared between the spells, absorbing the jets of light and pushing Malfoy and Sirius back. The both looked at Ana who held her wand out in front of her.
"Oh. Oops. Sorry. Reflexes..." She put her wand away, blushing slightly.
“What’s happening now?” Lily stepped in with Remus and looked at the scene in front of her.
“I’m not so sure myself…”James ruffled his own hair, looking confused.
“Grace? You’re sensible. Explain.” Lily turned to Grace, ignoring Malfoy’s glare.
“Erm, well, for some reason or other Malfoy came into our apartment, then him and Sirius got talking, like they do,” Lily nodded understandingly, “and the next thing I knew three different spells where being shouted, two jinxes and Ana’s Protego. Nice reflexes, by the way.” She nuged Ana, who smiled.
“Okay… I guess you did the right thing.” She turned to Malfoy, and glared, “Out Malfoy, you’re not wanted here.” She spoke harshly.
Malfoy glared at her, “I’ll go wherever I want, Evans. You’re not the only prefect around here. We’ll speak later.” He directed his last sentence at Ana, turned and left, the other two boys, following.
Grace explained to the confused newbie, “Basically, Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle. They’re idiots.”
“They’re Slytherin. Can’t expect much else.” Sirius growled.
“You two…” Lily turned to glare at Sirius and James, who suddenly looked frightened, “You just can’t stay out of trouble, can you?!”
“Self defence, Evans, pure self defence.” Sirius raised his arms defensively.
“Fine… but I won’t let it go next time.” Lily sat between Ana and Grace.
Sirius leaned out of the window, “There it is, peeps” He grinned at James, “Ready for some mayhem?”
“Aren’t I always?” James grinned back, ignoring Lily’s and Remus’ simultaneous groan. She pushed the boys out, ordering them to get changed. A few jokes later the boys were out, the girls were changed, and Ana watched her new home grow in the distance.
