Yeah so if anyone wants to put any input or anything into the story, I always accept tips and stuff so send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll read any tips or suggestions about this or any other story, also my little brother wants to write a FanFic, so I might get him to put it up on this site, he’s only 11 so it may not be the greatest but when he does, if anyone could give him a few words of encouragement it would help a lot.
So yeah, that’s it I suppose, I may not update within the next few days as I am moving tonight and this week till Saturday or Sunday, so hopefully I don’t make you wait too long… anyway yeah, read and review.
Chapter 6: Long Day
When John woke up the next morning his muscles and joints were aching in ways he didn’t know possible. He tried to roll onto his side but the pain was tremendous. He opened his eyes and tried to look around the room. His vision was clouded by sleep in his eye, and he didn’t recognize the room he was in. He managed to get his hand up to his face to rub out the sleep in his eyes. When his vision cleared he realized he was in his bedroom.
“How did I end up here?” he asked himself. Then the full course of events from the previous night flooded back into his mind, the escape from St. Mungos, the trip to the docks, then the fight with Pettigrew. Why didn’t he take Pettigrew in? Why did he let him sit there? He could have taken him and the One in to jail. Then he realized why he was at the docks in the first place, he had decided to use the One as a source in his own little private vendetta. He wasn’t even supposed to be involved in the investigation for Carly. His emotions would get in the way and cloud his judgment.
“Like they did last night.” He said to himself. He silently kicked himself for messing up like that, now he wouldn’t be able to report this to the Ministry, he would have to keep this a secret. Maybe Jack would be able to help him with this. John had been thinking of going off and finding her, maybe this would be as good a chance as any to take a leave from the office, to conduct his own investigation, maybe he could do some work for the Order by recruiting more members from Spain. He got up to go to the bathroom and made a mental note to talk to Jack about taking some time off and going to Spain to look for Carly, he would need backup anyway. He didn’t want to be alone in the middle of enemy territory. After a quick stop in the bathroom for a shower he robed up and ate a quick breakfast, then got ready to Apparate to the office making sure he had his wand with him.
By the time he had arrived at his desk Jack was already sitting in the desk opposite him.
“What took you?” he asked.
“Slept in. listen I need to talk to you about something later, when can you get out?” he asked in a hushed voice.
“I can probably leave around one if I work quick, and no one blows anything up today.” They both chuckled for a minute.
“Ok, I need to talk to Tonks about something, I’ll meet you at the, well where do you wanna meet?”
“How ‘bout the Three Broomsticks, in Hogsmeade?” John thought for a sec then nodded.
“Sounds good, I’ll meet you at one fifteen.” Jack nodded and John walked off leaving Jack to go over his paperwork. John slowly made his way to Tonks’ office stopping occasionally to talk to fellow Aurors, and magical law enforcement officers. He popped in quickly in Kingsley’s office to tell him to meet at Grimmauld Place tonight with Dumbledore, and to see what progress had been made in the investigation into where Carly was.
“Well we don’t have anything new to report. We’re trying to find out who could have taken her, we’re investigating some new cult that just popped up, and they may be connected to your Ex-wife.”
“K, thanks, I’ll see you tonight.” John finally made his way into Tonks’ office and sat down.
“What can I do for you John?” she asked pleasantly.
“I need some time off, starting immediately.” He said.
“What for?” she asked. “I can’t spare many Aurors lately.” She added.
“I need to find Carly, and I need Jack to come with me.” He said.
“We have people looking for her John.” She said, trying to sound stern.
“The Aurors are bound by the law, there are constraints, and procedures they have to follow, if I go and you cancel the investigation then you have three more Aurors to take over for me and Jack. Or you could give it to the Bottom Feeders.” He added, meaning the Magical Law Enforcement Officers.
“John you know they don’t like that title, they prefer to be called the Kiddies.” They both chuckled a bit. “Ok, I’ll give you some time, how long?” she asked.
“Indefinitely.” He said.
“I can’t write up a requisition for indefinite time off.”
“And I can’t function as an Auror with my fiancée missing.” He rebuked. Tonks thought for a moment and sighed. She was about to speak when a phoenix tail feather appeared on her desk in a flash.
“What the-” she asked. “We have a meeting tonight?” she asked reading the note attached.
“Yeah, I need to tell everyone about mine and Jack’s leaving, I figure I can try to recruit some people in-” he stopped, he almost said Spain, “where we need to go, I’m afraid I can’t tell you where, I have to protect my sources that much. The meeting will probably be small.” He said.
“Ok, well I have work so I’ll talk to you tonight then.” She said.
“Thank you. See you tonight.” John said and left the office. He walked to the atrium and got in a queue for a fireplace to floo to Diagon Alley. When he reached the fireplace he grabbed a bit of floo powder and said.
“The Leaky Cauldron.” He was instantly spinning and flying past numerous fireplaces. He finally began to slow down and finally stopped in the Leaky Cauldron.
“Morning Tom.” John said in passing. He went right to the back and tapped the brick to get into Diagon Alley. He began to walk around wondering where to go then he decided to get some money and buy some supplies for the trip. After a brief stop at Gringotts and a nauseating cart ride to and from the vault where his money was held. He walked to Ollivanders to buy a spare wand.
“Good morning sir.” Said Mr. Ollivander.
“Good morning. I’m looking for a spare wand I’m going on a trip for the ministry and I was thinking I may need a spare wand in case something happens to this one.” He said, feeling a little silly, he didn’t know anyone how had two wands.
“Of course sir, let me just take your measurements.” A measuring tape appeared and began to measure John. When it had finished Ollivander came back with several boxes in his hands.
“I have here a few that could suit your purposes.” He said. John began to pick up wands to see which one would react to him. He used both hands in case one would work where the other failed, until a wand he was reaching for began to shake.
“What the? -” He began. Mr. Ollivander’s face began to glow.
“I haven’t seen this in nearly a hundred
years.” He said “Go on, pick it up.” John picked up the wand and waved it with his right hand. A powerful amount of sparks and energy filled the air, John’s hair almost stood on end.
“Try the other hand.” He said. John did as he was told and waved it with his left. Again sparks soared, and electricity seemed to crackle throughout the air.
“What you have is a perfect match.” Ollivander began. “That wand is made with a elements that perfectly match your core being. That wand is made of Maple with a core combined of a phoenix tail feather, wrapped in unicorn tail hair. It means you have untapped power deep within you, concealed by a layer of peacefulness.” He said. John tried to deal with this information; he was starting to get a little freaked out by this behavior.
“Well sir, if don’t mind I’m in a bit of a hurry, so if I could just pay for this…” he said.
“No, do not worry about payment, just seeing this again is payment enough.” He said his eyes glowing. John walked out of the store putting his second wand in a concealed pocket in the back of his robes. He walked around Diagon Alley stopping in occasionally in certain shops, looking for supplies he would need on the trip into Spain. He bought two sets of everything, a set for him and for Jack. He bought a set of dragon hide armor to wear under his robes, in case some thing was shot at him, or Jack. At five to one John apparated back to his apartment to leave his stuff then apparated to Hogsmeade and went into the Three Broomsticks. He sat down in the nearly empty pub and Madame Rosemerta came over to take his order. He ordered two steaks and butterbeers for him and Jack.
He thought back to when he and Carly came here after questioning Snape and Karkaroff. They had eaten the same thing in the same bar. He looked over to the seat where they had sat to eat. He remembered the day. It had started off less then enjoyable, having to trudge up to an old busted castle, questioning former Death Eaters. After talking to them they had come up to Hogsmeade to finish off the day. He thought they would just have a quiet dinner and then go home or go to bed, it had ended up much different he hadn’t expected what happened to happen… instead of just eating and leaving he had ended up pouring his heart out to Carly, telling her about how his father was killed, along with his Ex-wife being a Death Eater and how that had affected him…
~“My dad was killed here. He came over to assist, much like we’re doing now, he participated in a raid on a known Death Eater location, he was killed, hit in the back with the Avada Curse, he didn’t even know it was coming...”
“Then when I became an Auror, my wife Eve betrayed us, she turned and I didn’t even know. All the unusual behavior, I put it off as stress. In hindsight I know that I knew something was wrong but purposely blinded myself to it. I couldn’t, I wouldn’t believe it.”
She leaned in towards John, he matched her, leaning as well, and she closed her eyes as their lips met. She felt a spark run through her mouth, down her face into her body. Their lips parted and she looked into those deep green eyes again and saw tears running down his face.~
He wiped his eyes so the tears wouldn’t stream down his face. John hadn’t had a chance to grieve yet for the loss that he had suffered. The gaping hole in his heart that only Carly could fill. He sat lost in his own thoughts until Jack walked through the doors and spotted John sitting. He walked over nodding to Madame Rosemerta.
“How long have you been here?” he asked.
“Just a couple of minutes, I already ordered for us.” John said.
“So what did you want to talk about?” Jack asked.
“I talked it over with Tonks already, so if you can then we do it tomorrow morning, if not I understand but I could use the help.” He said.
“What is it? Are you going to tell me or are you going to make me guess from your vague hints and suggestions?” he asked.
“I’m going to Spain. I’m going to go find Carly myself.
The ministry can only do so much with the law in the
way. I’m going to do it myself, and I could use the help, if you can come.” He said. Jack thought for a second then,
“You know that I’ll always have your back, no matter where. Of course I’m going with you.” He said with a grin.
“I knew you cared.” John said smiling.
“Hey! I’m only doing this because I know your mother would kill me if I let you go get killed, so one way or another we’re both in the same boat.” He said, they both laughed, and the food arrived.
“Ah thank you Madame, would you care to join us?” Jack asked as suave as possible.
“Maybe another time perhaps, I’m quite bust at the moment. Thank you though.” She said walking away. Jack shrugged, John said,
“Not quite Casanova.” They both chuckled, “oh and we need to meet tonight at Grimmauld Place tonight, Dumbledore will be there. I need to tell him we’re going, I figure we can maybe recruit some members
to the Order while we’re over there.” John finished.
“Good idea. Is that what you said Tonks?” John nodded. They sat and finished their meal and paid then left to go to Grimmauld Place.
“Well that was fun. Finally a nice quiet dinner without Death Eaters blasting down the door and Dementors
trying to suck all our food out with their damn kisses…” Jack said shaking his head, and chuckling.
“Kinda makes you miss the old days huh?” John asked.
“Not at all.” Jack said gravely. John nodded his agreement. Thinking back to Voldemorts first attempt at taking over the world was almost as bad as thinking of Carly, though less personal. They apparated back to number 12 Grimmauld Place and let themselves inside.
“I think we’re early.” He said checking his watch. Then as if on cue the front door opened again and in stepped Kingsley and Dumbledore with Tonks in tow.
“Ah, Messer’s Jackson and Blough how are you?” Dumbledore asked.
“We’re good sir though a tad rushed, should we head to the kitchen?” John answered.
“Yes of course.” Dumbledore said with that permanent smile under his half moon glasses. They made their way into the kitchen and sat.
“So what is the purpose of this meeting?” Dumbledore asked, as though he already knew.
“Jack and I are going to Spain to look for Carly. I know you can’t spare many of us, and the loss of two (and I beg you to allow some conceit) talented Aurors would be a painful loss, but I think we could also recruit some more members to the Order.” He said quickly.
“I thought you would feel the need to look for her, so I took the liberty to prepare some things for you, you will find them most helpful I think in times of need.” He said passing a box to John who took it.
“Thank you sir for your understanding, with your permission we need to be off, we need to get up early.”
“Of course, of course. Good luck.”
“Sir if I have to rely on luck then I’ve already failed, but thank you.” With that Jack and John walked out of the house into the square just before they apparated away Jack asked,
“how was your day?”
