Chapter 1 : Better Days

I was listening to the song and I somehow cooked this up.  It's how an anonymous woman feels over the course of the war, from the summer right up to the Battle of Hogwarts.
Harry Potter belongs to JKR
Better Days belongs to the Goo Goo Dolls
I Own Nothing except the nameless characters

Better Days.

She begs him to stay, pleads with him.  Tells him that no matter what, he cannot die.  He tells her he must go, he has to fight.  She shakes her head, tears streaming down her face.  She clings to his robes, pleads with him, tells him that the Order can survive without him.

He will not listen.

And you ask me what I want this year
and I try to make this good and clear
just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

She waits in silence, in the dark.  She waits for a sign, for news, for anything.  He told her, promised her he would be back.  That he would be safe.  She wonders if he’s broken his promise.  She told him not to go.  She wishes he had listened.

What if he doesn’t come back?  How will she manage?  How can she stay in the country if he is dead?  She must take what she can and run.

But she prays he will come home.

Cause I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
and designer love and empty things,
just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

The baby cries and she rushes to her.  Her little daughter, only a year old.  She has known nothing but war.  She rocks the child in her arms, telling her everything will be all right.  She tries to believe it herself.  What will they do if he doesn’t come home?  If this time, he isn’t all right.  They’ve been lucky so far but when will it run out?
So take these words
and sing out loud
cause everyone is forgiven now
cause tonight's the night the world begins again

He’s home.  She can’t help but cry as she throws her arms round him, vice like in relief.  This time, just like all the others, she thought she’d lost him.  She cries and shouts at him at the same time, both angry and happy.  But she cannot find the words to tell him how lost she would be if he were no longer there.

And its someplace simple where we could live
and something only you can give
and let's faith and trust and peace while we're alive

It’s been six months.  The world sinks further and further into darkness.  The only light rests with a seventeen-year-old boy.  She holds back tears.  Though why she cries she doesn’t know.  Could it be fear?  Or could it be hopelessness?

Christmas time was once a time for celebration, but no one has anything to be thankful for.  Instead of presents, they sit in silence, drinking in as much of one another as they can.  They know they will not last much longer.  Somehow their luck will run out.

Their little girl doesn’t know what’s happening.  If it weren’t for her, they would both have lost hope long ago.

And the one poor child who saved this world
and there's 10 million more who probably could
if we all just stopped and said a prayer for them

She waits alone again, waiting for the Death Eaters.  She doesn’t dare to hope that they will survive another night: because another day with her family would be everything to her.  Her daughter sleeps in the cot, moved from another room to her own.  If anything goes wrong, she wants to be as close to her as possible.

So take these words
and sing out loud
cause everyone is forgiven now
cause tonight's the night the world begins again

She has discovered hope.

In the form of boys she once knew, speaking on the radio, supporting Harry Potter.  If they believe that they can win the war, why shouldn’t she hope?  Why should she wait in fear of the next attack, when there are those in greater danger who dare to laugh in the face of He Who Must Not Be Named?

Now as she waits for him, she wishes she could fight too.  She wishes that she could be by his side, fighting together.  But then her daughter cries and she feels horrible for even thinking it.  The little girl is talking now, and she tries hard to smile for her child.  She wants her to feel happy.

But it breaks her heart when she asks for her father and he is not there.

I wish everyone was loved tonight
and somehow stop this endless fight
just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

It is spring now, and the darkness is ever thickening.  She has not lost hope, even though she cannot possibly see any way they could win.

All their lives in the hands of a seventeen-year-old boy.

So take these words
and sing out loud
cause everyone is forgiven now
cause tonight's the night the world begins again

Finally, there is news.  A break in a Gringotts, Harry Potter escapes again on the back of a dragon, his two best friends at his side.  If he can escape time and time again, and still come back to fight, there is hope.

He leaves again, this time for the very last time.  The Battle of Hogwarts, she knows, is the end.  It sparks the end, but whether good or evil will triumph…

This time she won’t be left behind.  She kisses her child goodbye, not knowing whether she will ever come back.  They leave her with his mother, not telling the woman where they are going, even though she knows it.

They apparate together to the Hogs Head and through a tunnel, they arrive at Hogwarts.

Everything that happens is a blur.  All she knows is that he will not leave her.  They stand together, curse after curse, jinx after jinx.  It feels as though the castle is coming down around them; friends and teachers fall all around them.

But somehow they survive.

Just when all hope is lost, Harry Potter survives again.  The boy, barely of age, defeats Voldemort – the name holds no fear for her now – and it is over.  She hugs him, kisses him.

But their victory was not without loss.  People she had once known are dead.  Friends are gone forever.  Parents left without children, wives without husbands, children without mothers, fathers.  By some miracle they survived, and stumble home, exhausted.  They are reunited with their daughter and suddenly everything is perfect.

They stand on the edge of a shattered world, looking away from the dark past and forward, towards the future: towards better days.

Cause tonight's the night the world begins again
