Open Your Eyes

All this feels strange and untrue
And I won't waste a minute without you
My bones ache, my skin feels cold
And I'm getting so tired and so old...

Benjy Fenwick sat at the windowsill, looking down at the snowy yard where Cat, Remus and some kids from the neighbourhood were having a reckless snowball fight. They had just enjoyed one of the famous McKinnon Christmas feasts, where the entire McKinnon clan - from five generations - had been present; all the way from greatgrandparents to second cousins twice removed and so on.

Even people from Mr McKinnon's work, and it had been the main reason why Benjy thought about retreating back to Hogwarts earlier than planned.

He had had the 'great pleasure' to meet Jasper Green, a Mr McKinnon's assistant, who Mrs McKinnon had planned to pair up with poor Marlene, who of course was completely oblivious of this. Benjy had quickly been introduced to everyone - well, most of them - before he had pulled himself aside, and settled to watch how young Jasper wooed Marlene - who of course smiled politely, and laughed at his dry jokes.

The only thing that kept Benjy rooted were the winks he got from Marlene through the entire night, and the longing kisses she put in before her mother dragged her away to meet an old friend of hers.

There was a creak, and Benjy looked around, seeing Marlene enter with two cups of coffee. "Hi you," she said quietly, as she entered the dark guest room.

"Hi," he said shortly, taking the cup of coffee she offered to him. He sighed, as Marlene jumped on the windowsill, and crossed her leg over the other, revealing her killer legs. Benjy couldn't help but stare at her bare feet. They were so beautiful. Every little thing about her was beautiful.

He didn't deserve her.

"Where did you disappear?" Marlene wanted to know, as she pushed a blonde curl behind her ear. "Are you all right, soldier?" she teased, a smile spreading on her heart-shaped face.

"I don't think this is working," he said heavily.

"What's not working?" she asked with a frown.

"You, me..." he said, not looking at her face. "Us," Benjy continued with a disgusted voice.

Marlene blinked a few times, and took a small sip from her cup. "Hmm," she mused, throwing her long hair over her shoulder as she leaned her forehead against the cool glass, her eyes staring out through the window. This wasn't the first time they had the same conversation.

"I'm... Marlene, you're young, beautiful, and you have your whole life ahead of you," Benjy said, lifting his gaze to the ceiling. "You don't want to get stuck with an old cripple like me. I'm no good."

"Hmm," she said again, her soft eyes darting to his face now.

"Hmm," Benjy agreed, looking slowly at her.

"Hmm," she said, narrowing her eyes suspiciously.

"Can you please say something else for a change?" Benjy said, clearly annoyed.

"Well," Marlene started, shaking her head. "I always knew you were an idiot." Benjy snorted, and shook his head, as Marlene smiled. "Why this sudden deepness?" she questioned.

"Because," Benjy started, struggling to find the right words. "Because you would be better off with that Jasper bloke."

"That junior!?" Marlene said loudly, looking revolted by the mere idea. "Come on! After you I don't think I can ever go back to dating young people!"

"Thank you for making me feel better," Benjy muttered darkly, the corner of his mouth twitching.

"Aww!" Marlene said teasingly. "You know I love antique..."

The anger swells in my guts
And I won't feel these slices and cuts
I want so much to open your eyes
'Cause I need you to look into mine...

"Marlene, please," he pleaded. "We're the most unperfect couple ever! Everyone can see that, everyone thinks we're completely wrong. You don't really want me for who I am, you want me for who you think I am."

There was a heavy silence between them, which was interrupted by Marlene, who slid down and landed softly on her feet, and stood in front of enjy, taking his face carefully between her warm hands. "Look at me," she said, her eyes suddenly flaming with something Benjy hadn't witnessed since Marlene's seventh year - pure anger.

"I'm looking at you," he said calmly, carefully putting his hands around her wrists, and removed them from his face.

"Damn it, Ben!" Marlene cursed, biting her lip in frustration. "Can't you see!?"

"See what?" he asked, looking down at their entwined hands, noticing that she was clutching his hands with her knuckles white. Still, he couldn't feel it.

"Look - at - me!" Marlene demanded, trying to act past the pain she was feeling by his nonchalant behaviour. Benjy looked slowly at her stunning face, shocked to see how vulnerable she looked at that very moment. "Can't you see me?"

"I see you," he said, frowning.

"No," Marlene whispered, shaking her head. "You see right through me, and think you're doing the right choice by leaving."

Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes...

He watched as she slowly let go of his hands, and walked over to the bed, falling heavily on it as she folded her hands neatly in her lap. "If you can't see me, then you should go..." she said, staring at the wall.

Benjy put down the cup of coffee next to Marlene's abandoned cup, and pocketed his hands, and sighed. "Fine. I'll just get my things later..." he said, and walked slowly to the door.

His hand was on the doorknob, just as someone slammed it shut again. Benjy followed the slender hand, followed by an arm and finally found Marlene's eyes only inches from his face.

"Just..." she started, struggling with the words. "You need to know that... that I love you just the way you are, and I don't care what other people think. As long as you know that, I'll be fine..."

Benjy leaned down, and placed his thumb under her chin to lift it up, his lips touching Marlene's gently, and pulled her in a bittersweet kiss. He was taken by surprise as he felt Marlene slowly wrap her arms around his neck, clinging to him desperately.

"Please," she whispered against his lips, as Benjy pulled carefully away. "Please, Ben... don't."

"Everyone knows you're better off without me," Benjy murmured darkly, a bitter smile appearing on his weary face.

Get up, get out, get away from these liars
'Cause they don't get your soul or your fire
Take my hand, knot your fingers through mine
And we'll walk from this dark room for the last time...

"No," Marlene growled, her nails digging into his back. "That's not good enough!"

"Marlene--"

"I want you to say that you don't think we belong together," she demanded, glaring at him. She pushed herself away from him, and backed away slowly, as she brushed her hair away from her face. "I want to hear you say those words - don't give me the crap about everyone else! I want you to tell me that you don't care about me anymore!"

He glared at her, but didn't say anything.

"If you're going to leave me because of what everbody else thinks, then guess what? Guess what? We'll run away! We'll... we'll get away from everyone, leave everything behind, and never look back again - never ever, you hear me?" she said passionately, her childish request echoing in Benjy's ears. "Come on, Ben, just... take my hand, and we'll... and we'll leave all this behind - everyone and everything."

"I can't ask you to do that," Benjy said calmly. "Not because of me, Marlene."

"You're not asking me to!" Marlene whispered. "I am asking you!"

"No!" Benjy said loudly, glaring at the girl.

"Then don't leave me!" she said.

"I'm not!" he said angrily, before taking two big steps to her, and grabbed her in a tight embrace, their lips crushing against each other.

Every minute from this minute now
We can do what we like anywhere
I want so much to open your eyes
'Cause I need you to look into mine...

Marlene clung desperately to him again, her lips slowly losing their power as she realized he was still going to leave her. He noticed the sudden change in her, and froze for a second, before carefully pulling away, and peered down at the broken angel in his arms.

"Are you going to stay?" she wanted to know.

He looked at her trembling lower lip, and let out a deep sigh, before turning his gaze somewhere behind her. "I don't have a choice, if you're going to be like this..."

"No," Marlene growled, her eyes watery again. "Don't stay because of me."

"What?" Benjy asked, looking confused. "Why should I stay, then? Because of the lovely weather?"

"No," Marlene said, shaking her head wildly, making her blonde curls fall over her shoulders. "Stay, because you have to. Stay, because you have to have me. Stay... stay because you need me. Don't stay because it's some sort of problem you can't get around!"

"You're one troubled young lady, aren't you?" Benjy muttered, as he eased Marlene's arms around his neck. "Please, Marlene..."

Marlene let him unwrap her arms without putting up a fight, and stared at him intently with those cursed eyes she mesmerized people with. She looked childishly stubborn, as she lift her chin higher, and Benjy shook his head in frustration. "What should I do with you?"

"Marry me," Marlene stated calmly. She watched as Benjy walked slowly towards the window again. "Marry me, and we'll show everyone that nothing can come between us. Nothing, Benjy."

"I'm too old to get married," Benjy said, looking over his shoulder at her.

"Then I'm too young!" Marlene snapped, walking up to him so that she was standing right behind him. "Either you make me a respectable woman, or you curse me to endless misery for the rest of my life."

"Don't be so melodramatic," Benjy said angrily, not looking at her.

Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes...

"You're the one being a masochistic bastard," Marlene murmured. "You're the one who wants to run away and live in eternal misery all by yourself and roll around I your selfpity," she continued harshly. She slowly leaned over his shoulder, and turned her lips to his ear. "Oh yes, I can see the glory in that."

"It's not--" he started, and spun around.

Only to be once again face to face with Marlene.

"Yes?" she said calmly, her hands slowly sneaking up his chest and on his shoulders, where she left them.

Benjy glared at her, but carefully wrapped his fingers around her hand, and lift it to his lips, giving it a gentle kiss before pressing it against his chest - his heart. "Do you feel that?" he murmured with a wry smile.

Marlene stared into his blue eyes, and smiled slightly as she nodded. "Your heart is beating like a drum..."

"That's what you do to me," he continued. "You make my heart drum."

"And that's a bad thing, because...?" Marlene wondered out loud, as she realized she had won the argument. She slowly leaned in, and kissed him softly, smiling widely at her victory. "I love you."

Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes
Tell me that you'll open your eyes...

Benjy closed his eyes, and smiled as Marlene trailed kisses down his jaw, and pressed her nose against his throat, breathing in his cologne. She enjoyed the way he ran his fingers through her curls, and listened carefully how his heart kept beating.

Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump...

"Hmm," Benjy mused, and Marlene smiled again.

"Hmm," she agreed. "You never said it back..."

"What?" Benjy asked with a frown, as Marlene pulled away to look up at his face.

"When I said I loved you," she insisted, watching his face closely.

Benjy brushed a stubborn curl from her face, and smiled. He slowly pressed his lips against her forehead, and smiled.

"I love you, Marlene McKinnon. Will you marry me?"

All this feels strange and untrue
And I won't waste a minute without you...

A/N: Okay, this is pretty much how Marlene and Benjy's Christmas went at the McKinnons' Mansion, so... I strongly advice you to read Untouchable where these two amazing characters play a smaller - yet important - role, in case this seems rather random.
