Background: Font color:
A twist of her wrist and sands started to pour out. Her world turned itself upside down. She closed her eyes and felt like she was hanging up side down. She felt dizzy, like she would fall to the ceiling. When she opened her eyes everything was changed.
Draco was still there, but he wasn’t Draco. He was Ron. She stared for a long time at the Ron dressed in Draco’s clothing. She looked at what was now the burrow. She stood up and held her breath sure she would fall onto the ceiling. It was so strange that everything was upside down. So weird that she stood attached to the floor when it was now the ceiling. A figure opened the door. Harry. He shook hands with Ron and they began to talk. More figures came through the door. Ron’s family. They all wore clothes like Ron; all expect Harry. Harry wore what he wore everyday.
Suddenly her grip on gravity changed and she began to fall towards the ceiling. It was a slow fall as if she was falling through jelly. She was able to turn herself around and landed safely on the ceiling. She watched the scene below her as the door opened again. This time she entered, smiling. Ron and Harry got angry and left but there was Ron’s family. Ron’s family!
She closed her eyes again.
“Hermione…” Draco’s voice was loud in her head. She blinked and looked up into his face. He smiled at her and leaned down to kiss her. She sat up and looked over at the hourglass he had given her. All the sands had reached the bottom.
“Turns your thinking around…” she whispered smiling slightly. She knew what she would do. “That’s a helpful item Draco.” She stood up and gave him a quick kiss. “I know what I have to do now. I’m afraid I should go.” Draco nodded. He understood.
He pulled him close to her. His arms wrapped around her waist. He lowered his head near hers. Hermione felt her heart beat fast as she felt Draco’s cold breath on her face. Part of her was still fighting this. Part of her didn’t want this to be Draco. Part of her wanted this to be Ron. Part of her always would.
“Hermione,” he whispered, “Virginia, stay just a little longer. I know this is hard for you but I want to help you. Let me be your friend.” he kissed her trying desperately to make her stay. “Let me heal your pain.”
Hermione stared up into his charming blue eyes. “I’ll come back,” she managed to get out. “I need to do just one thing then I’ll be back.” He pulled her just a little closer.
“Will you stay the night?” Hermione closed her eyes. She knew what he was asking, knew what he wanted but some naïve part of her thought that it wouldn’t happen.
“Yes. I have to go for now… I’ll be back.” She broke from his grip and ran to the fire place and grabbed a handful of the powder.
“I love you.” He said it just as she shouted her destination. Their eyes met and then she was rushed away.
How could she have let that happen? How could she let her heart beat this way? Why was she believing his lie?
Her mind whirled with thoughts as she felt the twist and turns of traveling by floo. She rolled out of the fireplace and into the place she knew the Weasley’s would go if the Burrow wasn’t safe.
She was met by five wands. She stood up and looked over the faces of Ginny, Fred, George, Mrs. Weasley, and Mr. Weasley. Ginny took half a step forward and stared at Hermione.
“Who did I have a crush on when we first met?” she shot at Hermione with out even blinking.
“Ron.” Hermione shot back quickly. “Who did I kill when I was three?”
“Draco’s grandfather.” Ginny smiled and then lowered her wand and hugged her friend. “Where have you been? We contacted your parents but they said you ran away.”
“Wait a second!” George shouted and the other for pointed their wands at Ginny and Hermione. “I’m sorry but does any one else think it’s weird that Hermione just said Ginny had a crush on her brother?” Ginny laughed.
“We came up with those last time we met,” Ginny explained laughing.
“We had to make sure the answers were so fake no one would guess then.” Hermione finished.
“That’s very smart girls,” Mr. Weasley said lowering his wand, everyone followed suit.
“Is it true?” Hermione burst out, her eyes almost filling with tears. “About Ron I mean?” Mrs. Weasley looked at Hermione and burst into tears herself.
“There, there Molly,” Mr. Weasley comforted his wife and gestured to Fred and George to take Hermione upstairs. Hermione followed Ginny, Fred and George upstairs to a room the three of them shared.
“First things first Hermione,” Fred said rather roughly and George checked her arms for the mark.
“Ron shocked us all,” Ginny began slowly. “Mum was the one who noticed he kept wearing long sleeves in summer.” She shook her head. “Harry had been in on it the whole time.”
“We couldn’t give them a chance to explain.” George added before Hermione could open her mouth. “We just grabbed our stuff and left.”
“Why didn’t you just kick them out?” Hermione asked feeling herself numb. Ginny was sitting next to her on the bed.
“Well, there was no telling how long it been since…since…and we couldn’t take the chance that the burrow was still safe.” Ginny stumbled out.
“How did you know we would be here by the way?” Fred asked staring at Hermione.
“I had a feeling Egypt was pretty far off from the war,” Hermione answered. “It’s where I would go if I was you.” They all nodded solemnly.
“So, how did you find out?” Hermione didn’t pay enough attention to see who asked.
“Draco… Draco pulled off his hood,” she said without thinking.
“What!?” Ginny screamed. “Hermione, you have to explain this one.” Hermione burst out in tears with out meaning too. Both Fred and George gave her a hug. Friends helped you through the toughest times even without knowing what was wrong. Hermione composed herself.
“At the beginning of the summer, my parents told me I was adopted,” she began watching all the faces drop. “I’m a pureblood…but to top the cake,” she hesitated, she couldn’t tell them. They would stop trusting her. “To top the cake I don’t know who my parents are. My mother is dead, she died after giving birth to me…but I don’t know who my father is.” She took a deep breath. “I was… I got captured by Draco after I ran away. I was in some dark dungeon when two hooded figures walked by. Draco removed Ron’s hood.” They accepted her explanation.
“It sounds like fate has been hard on the both of us. Mum’s been ill since we got here. Ginny just got over a bad cold too,” Fred said solemnly. Ginny gave her brothers some look that Hermione didn’t quite catch.
“Look, sorry Hermione but we’re going to go check up on Mum.” The twins left and Ginny and Hermione were left alone in the room.
Ginny started at Hermione for a long time, looking really sad. Hermione wanted to ask what was wrong but couldn’t.
“Hermione, are you going to tell me the truth? I know you might not trust us but please, I need a friend other than my family.” Hermione looked taken a back but looked up to see Ginny crying.
She told her everything. Every little detail. Her parents, her future, her attempt to run away, Harry and Ron’s reactions, Voldemort, the dreams, Grimmald place and Draco. She told her about all the dates, about what she was going to do when she left. She told her how confused she was. She told her how the sword of truth had said he lied.
“Hermione…” Ginny said in almost shock. “That’s a lot to go through in only a few months.”
“I just don’t know what I’m going to do Ginny. I want to believe him but I know it’s a lie.”
“Hermione, do you love him?” Ginny said laying down and staring at Hermione. Hermione had to seriously consider that question.
“I want to.” The words scared her, they scared Ginny too but after a moment Ginny smiled.
“Then tell the sword of truth to leave feelings alone and believe him. But Hermione, don’t go tonight. You and I both know what will happen.”
“I’ll have my wand Ginny, and I’ll make sure I sleep in a different room. I’m not stupid.”
“Just be careful.”
“I have to go now. I’ll be back tomorrow, to tell you everything, alright?”
“Yeah. That will really help Hermione.” They hugged and Hermione said goodbye to everyone, then floo’ed back to Malfoy Manor.
Draco was sitting there on a big armchair, his nose buried in a book on Quidditch. Hermione stepped out of the fireplace feeling regal, almost royal. She smiled when he didn’t notice her. Carefully she brushed off the ash and then look back up to see if he had noticed yet but Draco was gone. Arms wrapped around her waist making her gasp.
“Did you do what you needed to?” He asked in her ear.
“Yes. Draco, were you waiting for me this whole time?” she asked seeing a few books by the chair. Draco laughed and shook his head. It ruffled her hair and made her laugh. He waved the book he was reading in her face.
“No, I was reading the whole time.” Hermione turned around and studied his face.
“You have so little faith in me.” Draco brought her close to him.
“Do you blame me? Yesterday you slapped me in the face, and a few hours ago you jinxed me. You are a dangerous woman.” Hermione bushed him away and sighed slightly.
“I’m not dangerous Draco. I’m just scared. Nothing’s concrete anymore.” Draco grabbed her arm to stop her from walking away any more.
“Then make something concrete. Hermione, you keep telling me you’ve got nothing to rely on, no one to trust. I want you to trust me, I want you to rely on me.” When Hermione turned Draco was smirking at her. It made her smile. He brought her close. “You know, we won’t be the first Gryffindor and Slytherin couple. If I remember right your parents were one.” Hermione stared into his gray eyes and felt herself being memorized again.
