THIRTEEN YEARS AGO…
“Why do you love me,” he said and his fingers intertwined with hers.
She laughed at his question. No one had ever asked her a question like. Then again she had never told a man that she loved them before. There was a time once when she was certain that she was in love with Charlie Weasley but she knew now it wasn’t love. What she felt for Remus was so much stronger. She never felt so connected to someone in her life. It was the most unnatural feeling yet it was also the most natural thing to be with him.
He sighed. “How can you be sure that you love me if you don’t even know why?” he said.
She sat up and looked at him. She traced the outline of long scar across his chest with her finger tips. “I know why I love you,” she said.
“Why?” he asked again.
She leaned forward and kissed him on his lips. Sometimes she was amazed how he could act like he was the most ancient man alive and yet at other times he acted like an insecure teenager. She passed her fingers through his dry disheveled hair. “You are the best man I know.”
“A broken man is the best man you know.”
“Well I guess I’ll have to make you whole… wouldn’t I.”
“How...” he said and sat up so he was level with her. “How can you stand it… knowing that I’m a werewolf.”
“I stand it just fine.”
He groaned. “It should bother you that I turn into a violent monster once a month.”
“So do I,” she said.
He looked at her with an attempt to have a serious expression on his face but he couldn’t hold it. He couldn’t suppress it for much longer soon he was laughing at her. “I see your point.” He said and laid back down on the pillow.
“So if it doesn’t bother you then why do you think it will bother me.”
His eyes got serious again. “It bothers your parents.”
“They’re just being a bunch of hypocrites. She married dad when her mother said not to… so why should it be any different for me. I’ll marry who I damn well please.”
She expected him to show some support for her rant or even argue against it but she didn’t expect him to remain quiet and avoid looking into her eyes. Then she noticed what she said. She said, she made reference to her marrying him… was there a better way to scare a guy. “Sorry,” she said.
He shook his head. “Don’t apologize. It’s just that sometimes you make things sound so easy.”
“Do I… I thought I made things sound possible.” She squeezed his hand in hers. “I know it’s not going to be easy but I have faith that it will work out.”
“So you really think it’s possible… for someone like me to have a… wife.”
He quiet again… appreciating what she said then he looked up at her and caught her eye. “You would be my first choice you know.”
“I know.” She said
And she kissed him again.
She laid there in silence letting what he asked sink in. She wasn’t sure if he was asking her to marry him or if he just wanted to know if she loved him enough to marry him. She looked at him and he looked back at her with waiting eyes. “What are you thinking,” he asked.
She didn’t break eye contact. “I was remembering something… something I forgot years ago.”
“The feeling when you know you’re entire life is going to change.”
“Is it a good feeling?”
“It’s scary, exciting and beautiful…”
“Does that mean yes?” he asked cautiously.
“Are you asking me to marry you Severus?”
He sat up and looked down at her. “Yes.”
Her heart began to beat so loudly it felt like it was coming out her chest. She never thought she would be in this position again. She never thought that there would be someone that she wanted to give her heart to again.
“I think…” he started with a slight stammer. “I mean I know… I’d be a good husband to you. I know I don’t say it enough but it’s only because there is so much to say… I feel like I can never adequately express how much I love you… how much I need you.”
She stared at him in amazement. She couldn’t believe there was a doubt in his mind that she would say yes. She took her hands up and cupped both sides of his face. “Yes… Yes I’ll Marry you.” He leaned forward and kissed her. It was unlike any kiss he had every given her before. She was surprised that after all this time he could surprise her with anything he did. Usually when he kissed her she would always get that sense of desperation from him but this time she felt none of that, for the first time she could feel that he felt like he was kissing her as his other half, not some unattainable goal. He finally understood that she was his and it wasn’t going to change.
They laid awake and every five minute he would give her a new scenario about their life together… their wedding, their first Christmas, birthdays and just regular days when there was nothing special going on. He seemed to have a plan for everything. It became apparent that he had been thinking about it for a very long time… she got a feeling like this was something always wanted.
“And for our first anniversary… what will we do then?”
“What do you want to do.”
“Vacation… where will we go?” she asked, playing along with his little game.
“Italy… have you ever been there?”
“No… I never got around to it.”
“I’ve never been there… we can experience it together.”
She laughed and turned so she was facing him. “I never had you pinned as a romantic.”
“Really?” she said.
“Only with you,” he conceded. “I could have never been like this with my first wife.”
“That’s because she was physco.”
She smiled at him and turned her back so he could wrap his arms around her again. She was about to close her eyes when she heard a loud noise coming from the living room. She sat up quickly and looked around her. “What was that?”
“She just kept crying...” Harry said trying to explain. “Ginny tried to calm her but…”
Severus nodded, understanding exactly what was going on and lifted Jane into his arms. Tonks had never seen it this bad. She was crying hysterically… “It’s okay,” he said and began to walk around the room with her. “Tell me about the dream…” She began to mumble something about a witch and apples. Tonks understood right away it was the same dream she was having more than a year ago… the one that was brought on by reading snow white.
She turned her attention to Teddy who was leaning against the sofa with ash all over his sleeping clothes. She didn’t get a chance to talk to him since the article came out and she wondered if he had even seen it at all. She tried to catch his gaze but he wasn’t looking at her, he was looking at Jane and Severus with his brows knit in concentration.
“Harry,” she said. “How long has she been crying for?”
He sighed. “a while… she woke up the entire house really.”
“She usually does,” Tonks explained.
“What’s wrong with her…” Teddy asked from the corner. “Why does she cry like that?”
“It’s just a nightmare.”
He shook his head. “Well she acted like it was something real you know… like it was actually happening.”
“To a child her age… it seems real.”
He shrugged and looked at Jane whispering something to Severus and then he turned to Harry. “Why is she afraid of witches if her dad is a wizard?”
Harry stopped and turned to look at Tonks. She could tell that Harry himself had wondered about Jane’s mother… about if she was a witch of not. “She grew up reading muggle stories… have you ever heard of a good witch in a muggle story.”
They stood in silence for a while until everything was totally quiet again and Jane’s sobs had been reduced to silent tears. Severus walked back in the room with her in his arms and looked apologetically over to Harry.
“It’s not a problem really.” He said. “We were just worried that there might be something wrong with her.”
“She’s fine… she just has bad dreams sometimes… they can be very vivid… sometimes I think she can remember.”
“Remember?” Harry asked cautiously
“Severus, let me take her,” she said. She went over from Severus’ arms to Tonks’ without complaint. She wrapped her little arms around her neck and held on tight to her. “Teddy, aren’t you coming to bed.”
“I’m not sleepy anymore.”
“I’m sure if you tried you would fall asleep.”
He groaned in frustration and passed her to go down the corridor to his room. She walked down the hall with her and into the bedroom where she slept. She placed her in the bed and crawled in next to her. She wrapped her arms around her and began to stoke her hair lightly.
“Molly,” Jane said.
“Pa said that your not going to die like Martha… do you really think so.”
It always broke her heart to hear such a young child talk about matters like that. Why did she have to worry about who was dying. “I’m not dying…. I’m not going to leave you again Jane.”
“But the last time Martha ate the apple and she died and now you got one too.”
“An apple?” she asked, and Jane nodded. “That was a dream Jane… it was only a dream,” she pressed. But Tonks knew it wasn’t just a dream. Tonks could see now that there was actually a strong connection, almost magical connection between Jane and her biological mother.
