A/N: Ok ppl, here’s what is going on. This story is an AU so don’t flame me telling me how I’m screwing up the story line. ^_^ Umm, so ya that’s about it… this is just an idea that popped into my head and I thought I’d put it down in words, and lets hope I don’t totally screw this up. ^_^
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything JK Rowling does, but I do own a pair of caroling kitty socks that hums Christmas tunes… but that’s about it. ^_^
Spoilers: Uh, some of book 3 I guess.
Summary: What if Harry had moved in with Remus when he was seven because it was discovered that the Dursleys were not fit guardians?
By ~ Anna
Chapter One ~ And so it begins…
Remus Lupin had lived a quiet muggle life, with the exceptions of full moons of course, without any contact with the magical world ever since that fateful Halloween night six years ago. So naturally, it came as quite a shock when a big, brown regal looking owl flew threw his open window one sunny June morning and dropped a letter in front of his cereal bowl.
Recognizing the emerald green ink almost immediately, he grabbed the letter, read his name and flipped it over, breaking the seal quickly as the owl waited silently, obviously instructed to bring back a response.
His tired gray eyes took on a surprised look as he scanned the contents of the letter and ran a hand through his tawny colored hair that possessed hints of gray.
“Hmm, so apparently Dumbledore wants me to meet with him… but if he’s going to try to pull some grief counseling thing on-” He stopped short.
‘Too many years with James and Sirius. Besides, it’s been six years, it can’t possibly be that.’ He thought, the sensible part of him taking over.
Gripping the letter in one hand, he stood up and went down the hall to his study. Sitting down at his worn oak desk, he opened the drawer and pulled a piece of paper out, and lay it down on the nearly bare top of the desk. He took the quill that sat in the inkpot in the far right corner of his desk and began scribbling a response.
Finished, he reviewed his work. Once satisfied his short and to the point reply would suffice, he quickly strode back to the kitchen and gave the owl the letter, which took off before he could even offer it a piece of toast.
Dear Professor Dumbledore,
Tomorrow at 1 o’clock is fine. Your letter came as quite a shock
and I must say I’m curious as to what you wish to speak about.
Remus walked quietly down the halls of Hogwarts as memories of his school days flooded him.
~ Flashback ~
“James, are you sure this is a good idea?” Remus questioned worriedly.
“Of course it is Remmy. Honestly though, you worry too much.” Replied a calm Sirius.
“Why thank you James,” Remus shot back, annoyed.
“Not a problem, Moony.”
“Sirius, do we need to send you to St. Mungos?” James teasingly, “I mean, if you’re having an identity crisis…”
“Remember James, we already tried, they sent him back,” Remus added.
“Oh yes, I remember now, I suppose it’s good thing they sent him back before we started celebrating.”
~ End Flashback ~
Reaching the gargoyle that stood at the entrance of Dumbledore’s office, he muttered the password (Drooble’s Best) as specified by the letter, and watched as the gargoyle jumped aside.
‘You’d never guess he was addicted to sweets from the outside’ He thought amusedly as he walked up the moving staircase toward the oak door.
Knocking twice on the hard wood, he waited silently to be granted entrance.
“Come in.” a kind voice from behind the door called.
He pushed the door open and was greeted by the sight of Dumbledore skimming the contents of a book at his desk.
“You wanted to see me Professor?” he asked timidly.
Dumbledore looked up, smiled slightly, and replied as he stood to shake Remus’s hand, “Ah, Remus. Right on time. It certainly has been awhile. I was beginning to think we would never hear from you again, after all these years. It’s good to see you again. By the look of things, you’ve been holding up fairly well.”
“Yes sir, what was it you wished to speak about.”
“Oh yes, that.” Dumbledore responded, “Take a seat won’t you, this may take a little while.”
Complying, he took a seat in one of the two cushioned chairs that sat in front of the desk, and waited patiently for Dumbledore to continue.
“I’m sure you’re aware of Harry Potter living with his aunt and uncle?”
“Yes.” Remus said, slightly confused.
“Well, when he was first placed there, several magical protection wards were placed around his relatives house, without them knowing of course. Much to the insistence of Professor McGonagall I saw to it that the wards would give off a… warning of sorts if Harry would come into any kind of danger, physical or emotional. As of late, it has come to my attention that Harry is in exceedingly high danger and my intelligence leads me to believe that it is emotional and I should like to discover the cause. If it is indeed his relatives inflicting this danger upon him I should like to have it seen to that we remove him from their custody.”
“Professor, I should like to know how this includes me, since it is evident that it probably does.” Remus questioned, cautiously.
“Remus, I was hoping, since you were such good friends with James, that you would go and identify the situation at the Dursley residence. And possibly, if it is necessary to remove Harry from their custody, to take responsibility of him.”
“I will gladly go and see there is a problem, but with all due respect sir, if the situation does come to that, I hardly think I am in the right condition to raise a child, with my being ill nearly every month.”
“I understand your objections Remus, but I have a proposal for you that I hope you will take into consideration as I do believe you are most fit to take Harry in, having known his father so well.”
“During the period of your illness you would be able to reside in your old ‘haunt’ while Harry is looked after up here at the school and you would be able to stay a few days after that while recovering. I would gladly offer for you to live at the school, but I thought that you would probably like to retain your independence, unless I’m very much mistaken. Now, I’m not asking you to make a decision right away, but if you would think about it, during the process of identifying young Harry’s situation. Could you do that?”
“Yes sir, but why, may I ask, could Harry not reside here?”
“Remus, I believe you know as well as I that a child needs a guardian and unless Professor Snape were to step up to the position, which I highly doubt, he would not find one here.”
Remus nearly choked on his own breath at the mention of Snape but recovered enough to manage, “Yes sir.”
A knock immediately followed Remus’s response and once again, with a “Come in” from the Dumbledore, the door was pushed open, but instead of a kindly looking Remus coming through the door, it was a solemn looking Snape.
Eyeing Remus suspiciously, in a cool tone Snape said, “Excuse me sir, I don’t mean to intrude, but I was hoping I could speak with you about something.”
“Not to worry, I’m sure Remus has had quite enough of me,” Dumbledore said with a grin-like smile, “So, I suppose I will be seeing you again with report of what you find then Remus?”
“Yes sir,” Remus replied, standing up, “I will also consider what we discussed. Good day then, sir.”
“Yes, yes. An excellent day it is, I wish you the best of luck.”
Remus proceeded to walk towards the door, brushing past Snape with a nod and “Severus…”
