“Are you sure this is ok?” Shay asked Niki as she was getting ready to leave.
“Shay, we’ll be fine. Go have fun with Sirius. When’s the last time it’s been just you two?” Niki asked while playing with Cillian.
“I can’t even remember. I was so surprised when he told me we were going out,” Shay said with a smile.
“Well, go have your romantic night with your lover boy,” Niki said.
“So, have you told Remus yet?” Shay asked.
“No, I’m not ready yet,” Niki said and wanted to drop the subject.
“Niki, you’re four months along now. Remus will start to notice soon. I’m sure he’d rather find out from you instead of one day noticing that his girlfriend is pregnant,” Shay said.
“What if I told him I was going to visit family for a few months, and I had the baby and gave it up for adoption?” Niki asked, looking a little desperate.
“No, that’s a horrible idea. How about you just tell Remus and get it over with?” Shay more or so told Niki than asked her.
“What are we telling Remus?” Sirius asked as he entered the room.
“None of your business,” Shay said and Niki gave her a nervous look.
“Fine. Are you ready to go?” Sirius asked.
“Yes,” Shay said and gave Cillian a kiss.
“We’ll be back before midnight,” Shay said.
“Maybe,” Sirius said right before they left.
Sirius and Shay sat at dinner waiting for their meal. Sirius couldn’t seem to sit still and Shay couldn’t help but give him a suspicious look.
“Is there something wrong?” Sirius asked.
“No, I’m just trying to figure out why you’re being so romantic,” Shay said with a smile.
“You deserve it. Valentine’s Day is coming up and we’re celebrating a little early,” Sirius said with a smile to match Shay’s.
“How long have we known each other now?” Shay asked.
“Almost twenty years now.”
“And how long have we been together?” Shay asked.
“A little over two years now,” Sirius said.
“Ok and every time you do something nice like this, you always have something up your sleeve,” Shay said.
“Dearest girlfriend, mother of my child, I promise you that I have nothing up my sleeve tonight,” Sirius said with an angelic smile.
Shay raised her eyebrow and smirked at Sirius,”You’re lucky you’re handsome.”
Shay and Sirius had a beautiful dinner. Shay had stopped accusing Sirius that he was up to something and enjoyed her time with him.
“Did you have a good night?” Sirius asked and sat back in his chair.
“Yes I did,” Shay said with a smile.
“I’m glad you enjoyed in but there is one more thing I have to do,” Sirius said and Shay automatically raised her eyebrow.
“I know we’ve talked about it before and were always against it. I love you Shay and I never want to be without you. We are happy and that’s more than I ever imagined growing up. You’ve always been my best friend and I always knew I would end up with you. You are the mother of my child and I love you both very much. I want us to be a family forever. So, Shay, will you marry me?” Sirius asked and got down on one knee.
Sirius opened the box that was in his hand and showed Shay the ring. She automatically knew that he had spent too much money on it, but she didn’t care. Shay took in a big shaking breath and grabbed Sirius’s face and kissed him. She broke away and smiled.
“Of course I will,” Shay said lightly.
Sirius took the ring out of the box and slid it into her finger. It fit perfectly. Shay pulled Sirius up so they were both standing and Shay flung her arms around Sirius’s neck.
“I knew you were up to something,” Shay said and kissed him again.
Shay and Sirius left their dinner more in love than ever and couldn’t seem to let each other go.
“Are you sure you want to go home? We can stay out longer if you want,” Sirius said.
“I don’t want to be anywhere else but home,” Shay said with a smile and squeezed Sirius’s hand.
They both apparated back to their house and stepped through the front door. They were shocked when they stepped inside. Tables were turned over, mirrors were shattered, and holes were in the walls.
“What the hell happened here?” Sirius asked and started to survey the destruction.
Shay suddenly became frantic.
“Sirius, where’s Cillian?” Shay asked in a cry.
Sirius’s complexion paled greatly and they both dashed down the hall. They both started to knock every door open as they searched for their son among the wreckage of the house. They both reached the last door, which was Cillian’s room and quickly opened the door.
Shay let out a terrifying scream.
Sirius opened the door more to see what was wrong. Niki’s lifeless body was lying crumpled on the floor in front of Cillian’s bed. Shay dropped to her knees and started to cry uncontrollably. Sirius tried to keep himself together and slowly walked towards Cillian’s crib, hoping for the best. Sirius looked into the crib and let out a yell of his own. Shay looked up and started to shake.
“What’s wrong with my baby?” Shay asked hysterically.
Sirius couldn’t respond. He turned his face away from Shay and sank to the ground.
“What’s wrong with my baby?” Shay yelled this time and frantically stood up and looked into the crib.
Shay saw the image that would haunt her for the rest of her life. Her son laid in his crib with the same lifeless expression that Niki had. Shay immediately picked up her child.
“Cillian, wake up. Mommy’s here,” Shay said with tears streaking down her face.
“Cillian,” Shay kept repeating and held her son closer.
Shay looked down at Sirius. His hands hid his face but Shay could hear his loud sobbing.
“Sirius,” Shay said with desperation as she felt Cillian’s limp body become colder.
Sirius removed his hands from his face and gave Shay a blank stare.
