They were sitting in front of the fireplace in the Gryffindor Common Room. It was the day after the Final Battle. Ron was in the hospital wing visiting Neville, while Ginny was hanging out with some friends outside. This left the two of them alone. "Harry," said Hermione finally, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, "I need to tell you something."
"What is it?" he asked.
"Harry, I've always been there for you and feared for your safetly to a point that you'd get frustrated with me. In fourth year, I realized it was because I was falling for you. I didn't say anything beccause I knew you fancied Cho. Now, you're in love with Ginny, and I want to be happy for you. But, I can't find it within myself. I'm sorry." Harry opened his mouth to speak, but Hermione said, "Let me finish."
Harry closed his mouth and nodded. Hermione continued, "I just thought you should know, though your feelings aren't the same." She stood up and quickly kissed him. "I love you, Harry," she said before she ran out.
"Hermione!" he called, running after her. When he reached the hall, the brunette witch was nowhere in sight. "Shit."
The next day, they all found out Hermione was gone. She left with no note, no good-bye, no message left with anyone, and no sign of where she was going. Only Harry knew why she had left so suddenly, and his heart broke.
-THREE YEARS LATER-
As Harry, Ron, Neville, Ginny, and Draco walked onto the beach in California, Harry couldn't help but wish Hermione was there. In three years he hadn't found her; but, he hadn't given up. "Can you believe it?" said Ginny excitedly, yanking Harry from his thoughts. "California!"
"It is wonderful," agreed Neville. Ron smiled at him and squeezed his hand.
The five of them talked happily as they sat out their towels. They all stretched out, trying to soak up the sun. Then, they heard a squeal they knew belonged to Lavender Brown. Ginny, thinking Lavender had spotted them, said, "Shit."
Then, they saw her run over to two girls. One was blond with blue eyes. She wore a blue bikini top and a pair of cut-off, jean shorts. She had a tattoo of some mystical creature on the front of her left hip.
The other girl (whom Lavender attacked with a hug) had curly brown hair, that had sun-made blond highlights. She wore a red bikini top and cut-off jean shorts. On the front of her right hip, she had a tattoo of a snitch. "Lavender, it's so good to see you!" said the brunette. "I was so happy when I found out you'd be here."
When she pulled away from Lavender, Harry saw her face. "Hermione?"
The girl looked at him and her chocolate-coloured eyes grew wide. "Hary," she said. Ginny, getting over her inital shock, marched over to Hermione and smacked her. "What the bloody hell!?"
"Ginny!" exclaimed Draco as he pulled Ginny away from the shocked brunette.
"That was for leaving us!" Ginny said angrily. "Do you have any idea how worried we were? For all we knew, you could have been dead!"
"Well, as you can see, I'm fine," replied Hermione as she crossed her arms over her chest. "I've been living here with Luna for three years," she said, motioning to the blond.
"Why'd you leave, Mione?" asked Ron sadly.
"My reasons are my own."
"Hermione--" started Harry, but she said, "Don't talk to me."
"Why shouldn't he?" asked Neville. "He's your friend."
Harry tried to reach out for her, but she stepped away. "Just don't," she said softly. Luna noticed tears filling her friend's eyes.
"C'mon, Mione, let's find Greg and go," she said. Hermione walked off, but Draco stopped Luna.
"Who's Greg?" he asked.
"Her boyfriend." Harry's heart, which had reformed upon seeing Hermione, shattered once more.
"Why'd she leave?"
"Because of him," she answered, nodding towards Harry before leaving.
Ginny punched his arm. "You knew why my best friend left and you didn't tell me!" she said angrily.
"She thought," started Harry softly, looking at his feet. "She thought I was in love with you."
Ginny's mouth formed a small "o". Draco and Neville looked at him with sympathy. "You love her, don't you, mate?" said Ron.
"Yes," was all Harry said for the rest of the day.

"Good-night," said Hermione before unlocking her door.
"Mi," said Harry, and she turned to face him, "why'd you walk out before I could say anything those years ago?"
"I couldn't bear to hear you say you loved Ginny."
"Oh." Harry turned and she watched as he walked to the gate. He turned around to face her. "You know, I was going to tell you that I love you, too." Then, Harry walked off.
Tears fell down her face as she went into the house she shared with Greg. She shut the door and leaned back against it, still crying. Greg came into the hall. "Hun, what's wrong?" he asked.
