xoxoxo, Julia

“Blake, Mayura!” shouted Professor McGonagall, reading from a scroll of aged parchment. A weedy girl with banana-yellow hair hopped up, and the minute the old hat touched her head, it screamed, “RAVENCLAW!” I was sitting beside Remus and James. Sirius was sitting beside James. E were holding hands, crossing our fingers. For what? We weren’t really sure.

“Black, Sirius!” McGonagall said, staring straight at him, as if reminiscing on something. He stood up and we all wished him luck. I wasn’t sure  why his eyes lingered on me a bit longer than they did on the other Marauders. He sat down on the chair and squeezed his eyes shut.

McGonagall sat the hat on Sirius’ head, and for a few seconds all was quiet Suddenly, a voice boomed from the hat,
“GRYFFINDOR!” He sighed and slumped down from the stage, smiling ear-to-ear. We all stood up and hugged him.

“Lucky, mate!” said James, hand slapping him.
“Good thing ya weren’t in Slytherin like yer parents!” shouted Remus, acting much livelier than when I first met him.

“Johnson, Dido!” she shouted. I stopped cheering for Sirius and I froze. My blood ran cold. I slowly stepped onto the chair and thought,
“Okay, I want to be with my friends, Gryffindor!”

the minute I thought the word ‘Gryffindor’, that’s what the sorting hat shouted into the Great Hall. I opened my eyes and saw the Marauders screaming and giving themselves High-fives. I smiled brightly and skipped down the stairs to the Gryffindor table.

“Dido, you OWNED that! Literally!” shouted Sirius, pulling me into his embrace.
“Uh, Sirius,” I said in a choked voice, “I can’t breathe...”
“Oh.” He said brusquely, his eyes shining as he let me go. I blushed and smiled.

“Okay, Remus, out  of us, you’re next, okay. Do your thing, Moony.” Said James, wagging his finger at the boy.

“What’s ‘Moony’? I asked curiously.

“Moony’s a nickname for Remus bec-“ started Sirius, but James cut him off.
“...Because Remus likes the subject of astronomy and moons, right?” he said
quickly.

“Lupin, Remus!” the name echoed through the Hall.

“Go on, man” we hissed when Remus refused to budge.
He was so scared we resorted to pushing him towards the chair.
McGonagall raised her eyebrows in sympathy, dropping the frazzled hat on the boy’s head.

Remus flinched and yelped in horror as the hat screamed, “GRYFFINDOR!” he looked up in terror and sighed in relief. He was in Gryffindor. Good, I thought smiling. He was the nicest and most considerate of the lot.

“Potter, James!” the old and thin professor called out.

James smiled proudly and strutted towards the chair. He nodded his head and smiled widely at McGonagall.
“ ‘Afternoon, Minerva. Lovely day, innit?” he said bravely.
“Mr. Potter, I’d suggest you just sit down and get this over with, all right?” she asked lightly yet sternly.
“ ‘Course, Minerv-“ he got cut off from McGonagall when she slapped the hat on his head impatiently. He scowled and rolled his eyes.
“GRYFFINDOR!” shouted the hat the moment James rolled his eyes.
He mimed screaming in joy and pumping his fists.
“Blimey, you lot are REALLY enthusiastic about the sorting, ain’t ya?” I asked, my thin arms crossed in front of my chest.
