A/N: this chapter takes place before Lily and James start dating. This is in James' POV by the way.

"Hey Evans!" I called. I saw her freeze, and then walk faster. I sighed, and started to run after her. "EVANS! COME ON! WAIT UP!" I yelled, dodging other students as I ran through the hall after Potions. I caught up to her quickly and grabbed her arm to stop her. "Lily. Please. Just hear me out," I begged. She sighed and looked at me expectantly and I let go of her arm.

"No," she said quickly.

"You don't even know what I'm gonna ask, Lily," I replied quickly.

"Fine. What do you want?" she asked tiredly. I grinned.

"Go out with me?" I asked hopefully. She gave me an irritated look.

"No Potter," she answered and looked away and took a step in the opposite direction. I tugged her arm gently.

"Please Lily?" I asked. She sighed.

"No," she said firmly.

"Why not?" I asked. Yeah. I got her there. She probably doesn't even have a good reason. So I'm a little arrogant. Big whoop. Everybody is. It's called self-confidence.

"Because I don't like you," she replied simply. Wait what?

"Why not?" I asked.

"Because Potter. You're arrogant-" she started

"It's called self-confidence," I interrupted.

"--you pick on Snape for no reason--" she continued.

"He called you know what," I said helplessly.

"--your ego is huge--" she said as if I never said anything.

"That falls under self-confidence, love" I said cockily.

"Don't call me that. You always annoy me," she replied.

"If you only went out with me, I wouldn't have to annoy you to go out with me" I said.

"You embarrass me," she said,

"WHAT!? WHEN?" I asked.

She raised an eyebrow. "This morning in the Great Hall when you started singing, "I love Lily Evans" in front of the entire school." she said matter-of-factly.

Damn. I forgot about that. "Well forget about that," I said.

"You walk around the school like you own the place,"

"I might as well own it. Everyone loves me anyway...except the Slytherins..but they're slimy gits,"

"I don't like you," she said.

"Yet," I added.

She rolled her eyes. "You think you're absolutely hilarious"

"I am, and that falls under self-confidence as well, love,"

"Stop calling me that! You think you're God's gift to women,"

"Never said that, but now that you mention it..."

She gave him another irritated look.

"You annoy me," she said simply.

"You already said that, but I'll humor you. When?" I retorted.

"When you pass me annoying notes in class, when you ask me out, you're annoying me right now in fact," she listed.

I huffed. She gave me an expectant look. "Anything else? Or can I leave?"

I grabbed her arm quickly. "Come on Lily. Just tell me what I have to do, and I'll do it," I pleaded.

"Why don't you grow up?" she asked angrily.

"I have!" I exclaim.

"No Potter. You haven't. You still act immature, you treat people like your scapegoats, you think you're the smartest person in the world--" she starts saying but then my face falls and my grip on her arm slackens, and then she stops. "Sorry. Look Potter, I will not go out with you. I don't like you that way. We'd both be better off if you just dropped it," she said. She shook her arm out of my grasp, turned and walked away.

Oh well. As much as that hurt, I'm not gonna stop until she gives me a chance. There's always tomorrow.
