Chapter 12: Permanent Ink

The rest of the week went by much better. James was eating and laughing again. He looked much better and so did everyone else. Summer was coming to an end though and all of them were going to miss the lake.

“When are you leaving Lily?” Sirius asked.

“On Tuesday, my mum wants everything to be settled before I go to school. I don’t know what I am going to do for three weeks without you all,” Lily said, looking a little sad.

“I live in London, Remus is going home for a few days to be with his parents and for his furry little problem,” Lily burst out laughing at how James referred to Remus’s situation, “you could come hang out with us there.”

“Hey, I live in London, we could just take turns at each others houses, where do you live? I live in the old part where all the neighbors are old or really young with familys and all the houses are well kept. I live at 1243 King Charles Street,” Lily said getting excited.

“Really? Well, my family lives on 1264 Downing Street. You live by that park and stuff,” James said getting excited himself.

“Yeah!!! Hey, don’t you think that it’s weird that your sister had a wedding in London and you didn’t stay at your own home?” Sirius said clapping his hands together like a little boy.

“No, it was a wedding so we stayed in the hotel like it was supposed to be. We weren’t going to move all our stuff back for just a week. Anyway, when are you all leaving?” Lily asked the boys.

“The same as you. My dad is the head of the auror department and my mum’s an auror too. They have an assignment coming up and want to be home for it,” James said.

“I guess that means we only have a couple days left here then. The weekend and Monday, well, what should we do?” Remus asked.

“I think we should do something reckless,” Sirius said.

“You only know how to do reckless things,” Lily said causing James and Remus to laugh and Sirius to pout.

“Fine Miss I think I know all, what do you think we should do?” Sirius asked challenging Lily.

“I don’t know, maybe we should just let it play out,” Lily said with a smirk.

“Okay, everyone meet at the dock tonight at about eight. We are going into town and I know just the thing for us to do,” Sirius said with a large grin.

Lily gave each a hug and pulled James aside giving him a much needed kiss.

“James, I am a little scared,” Lily said smiling.

“Me too,” James said wrapping his arms around Lily in a hug and enjoying her scent and the warmth of her body next to his. He pulled her head up so he could look into those sparkling pools of emerald green and kissed her.

“I love you Lily.”

“I love you more,” Lily said and they separated, both a little scared about what Sirius had in mind.

“Mum, Dad, I am going into town tonight with the boys and I am just a bit scared about what they have planned so if I come home looking different, don’t say I didn’t warn you,” Lily said to her laughing parents.

“Flower, have fun. Please be careful though, we still would like to be able to recognize you. You are of age though so, just don’t be to reckless,” Mr. Evans pulled his daughter into a hug.

“Have fun Lou,” Mrs. Evans said giving her daughter a hug and then following her out the door.

Lily could see them all over there at the dock, their meeting place. She was going to miss the lake and seeing them everyday even though she would continue to see them everyday in London. She would miss the stars and the way she could just jump into the lake any time that she wanted.

“Lou, have fun and don’t worry about getting home early. I know that you can drink now but don’t overdo it okay. We trust you,” Mrs. Evans said giving her daughter one last squeeze.

“Bye Mum, love ya,” Lily said making her way to the boys.

“Love ya too Lou.”

Lily walked up to the boys: all of them had a look of mischief on their faces, well all of them but Remus who looked a little nervous too. They saw Lily and all smiled, it was a bit creepy.

“Hey Red, ready to go?” Sirius asked, smiling slyly at her.

“Sure,” Lily said a little quietly.

They apparated into town and began to walk a bit. Lily had no idea where they were going but the others seemed like they knew exactly what was going on. They were on the main street that had coffee shops, clothing stores, a bar, and a tattoo parlor. They stopped at the tattoo place and then Lily understood why they were all smiling like a bunch of idiots. Lily tried to turn around but she couldn’t, they were blocking her path.

“Let go guys! Let go!!” Lily yelled, she was panicking a bit.

“No Lily, if they are making me do this then you have to do it too,” Remus said, paling a bit.

“Come on, it can’t be that bad can it?” Sirius said.

“Yes it can. I don’t want one,” Lily said.

“Don’t worry love, I’ll be there holding your hand the whole time,” James said.

They all walked in and dragged Lily along with them. It was cooler inside then it was outside and there were a lot of curtains made of beads and multi colored shawls everywhere. There was a glass counter where you could choose what tattoo you wanted. It wasn’t a scary place or anything but Lily did not want to get one. The boys walked up the counter and began discussing what tattoo’s they were getting and where they would get them. They all decided on getting one’s that had to do with the marauders and they were getting them on their upper backs. Lily looked down into the case and saw the one she would get. A red lily, since her nickname was Red. James was getting a stag, Sirius a black dog, and Remus a wolf.

“Well Lily, have you decided?” Sirius asked with a smug expression on his face.

“I guess so, since you won’t let me leave until I do this,” Lily said glaring at them all and speaking angrily.

“Flower, it can’t be that bad. Muggles get it done all the time,” James squeezed her hand tightly letting her know he wouldn’t let her go it alone.

The tattoo person walked into the room and walked behind the counter followed by a guy who looked like a biker. The tattoo administrator was tall and muscular with quite a few himself, he had long brown hair that was tied in a pony tail. He looked nice though and after he finished with the biker customer he looked over at the Marauders and Lily, the honorary one.

“Well, what will it be?” he asked smiling.

Sirius pointed out the ones that they wanted to the clerk, he had chosen a black dog, James, a stag, Sirius, a wolf, and Lily a red lily.  Then they were led behind a beaded curtain to a room where there were a few chairs and a  needle, buzzing. Lily felt herself pale as she looked at it. She hated needles.

“Who is first?” the clerk asked.

“I guess I’ll go first, Lily you should go next because I just have a feeling that Sirius is going to freak you out even if it doesn’t hurt,” James said happily.

He sat in the chair and took off his shirt so the man could go to work, his face cringed a little at first but you could tell that he got used to it and his face turned back to normal.

“Look how big that needle is,” Sirius whispered to Lily who was now even more pale.

“Shut it Padfoot,” Remus said, a worried look on his face.

“What, it is, I mean just look at it,” Sirius pointed at it, it was a little big.

Remus punched him hard in the arm which shut him up for a bit.

Lily was trying to calm herself down by taking calming breaths and counting to ten and telling herself that everything was going to be okay. It was, wasn’t it?

James finished, it looked good on him. It made Lily want to kiss him but she had bigger fish to fry. James saw the worry in her face.

“Lily, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to,” he said looking into her worried eyes.

“Like hell she doesn’t,” Sirius said.

“Shut it,” Remus said slugging him good in the arm yet a gain.

“No, I want to do it it’s just that… well, does it hurt?” Lily asked, the childish question escaping her lips in a whisper.

“It stings a little at first but I know you can take it Lily, you are one of the strongest people I know.”

“Okay, I’ll do it,” Lily said sitting in the chair. Luckily she had worn a tank top so she didn’t have to take her shirt off. Her tattoo was going on her upper right back, close to her shoulder. She felt James grab her hand and smile at her while Sirius just laughed with joy at her predicament. She just stared at James as she heard the machine begin to buzz again. Lily squeezed James’s hand a little tighter and them she felt a prick. It didn’t hurt, too badly. James just continued to hold her hand and smile at her. Maybe it was a good thing that he was a few months older then her, he seemed a little wiser, even in those few seconds. When it finished Lily felt like a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders and she got to look at her tattoo. It looked good too. She gave James a kiss on the lips for being her knight in shining armor.

“Thanks for holding my hand,” she smiled at him.

“Anytime Lils, anytime,” he said giving her a hug.

“Please stop before I puke,” Sirius said making gagging noises.

Remus was sitting in the chair and looked a little scared. Lily grabbed James’s hand and led him to sit by Remus. They both just sat next to him having already experienced the pain and he looked thankful for it. When he was done Sirius took a seat. Remus’s tattoo looked great, the wolf was awesome.

Sirius, just as the needle tapped him, let out a little yelp. All of them turned to look at him, trying to suppress their laughter.

“Should we go sit with him?” Remus asked.

“No, let him suffer a bit longer,” Lily said.

They let him sit there the whole time and every now and then they heard a little yelp from his mouth. When it was finished he just pouted at them. They made their way to the counter and payed the bill before leaving. They apparated to the lake where Lily ran into the house to get her camera and her mother.

“What did you do?” Mrs. Evans asked.

“I got a tattoo on my right shoulder,” Lily said.

“Is that all?” her mother asked sarcastically.

Lily handed her the camera and led the boys inside. They all lined up. The boys took off their shirts and Lily slid the strap off of hers. They turned their heads and smiled for the camera. They then went outside to go home.

“That was really mean guys to just let me suffer there,” Sirius said still pouting.

“Get over it, I remember someone not being so nice either, ‘Look how big the needle is,’” Lily said.

“Anyway, don’t you think they look cool. You’re stuck with us now Evans, it’s like we’re all branded,” Sirius said.

“Great, just what I always wanted, to be branded a Marauder for forever,” Lily said sarcastically with a smile.

“You know you like it,” James said giving her a squeeze.

“I guess you are just a tinsy tiny bit right,” Lily said, pulling away to say goodnight to Remus and Sirius before turning back to James.

“Night love, I love that tattoo,” James said as he kissed her forehead.

“Really, I love yours too,” Lily said before pulling him into a good kiss. They began to snog a bit. They pulled apart a little after and said goodnight to each other. They had three days left at the lake and everyone was going to count.
_______________

Okay, finished this chapter. I know in the Harry Potter books that Lily is older then James but I changed it for my own reasons. Hope you liked this chapter, I thought we needed a happy one after those few not so happy ones. Also, does anyone think that I should continue this story so that it goes into their life long after this summer and on into their deaths? I want your opinion so please review. Thanks, Dee(I really want to go into their life but I still would like your opinions)
