Embarrassment: noun; the feeling of self-consciousness or shame.
‘Rose, are you sure you’ve got everything?’
‘Yes mum, I’m positive and you should be too seeing as you’re the one who packed my bags and have been doing so for the past 6 years. I’ve never forgotten anything before and neither has Hugo so I don’t see why now should be any different.’
‘Yes, yes I know I know. It’s just a mother thing. We worry’ Hermione rattled on, ‘oh gosh, to think you were just a little girl a few years ago and now you’re a young woman. And this is your last send off. Oh my.’
‘Seriously Hermione you better let her go before she misses the train all together’ Ron interjected laughingly, although it was clear that even he felt slightly emotional.
‘Oh shush Ron. Honestly you’d have thought after 26 years you would’ve learnt to be a bit more sensitive’ Hermione protested.
‘Yeah dad how could you?’ Rose joked with her father as he pulled her into a big bear hug.
‘Now Rosie, whilst I know you take after your mother in terms of studying a ridiculous amount and coming out with brilliant grades, you make sure that you break some rules along the way’ he said with a wink.
‘Ron! She’s head girl! How can you even think of suggesting that?!’ Hermione said, clearly outraged.
‘Hermione even you broke the rules when you were her age. And anyway even if she doesn’t I know Hugo will find perfect opportunity to promote some of the new products’ He said with a cheeky grin that he knew would make it impossible for his wife to stay really mad at him.
‘Okay you two continue this little argument, I’ll just be off shall I? Rose interrupted.
‘Oh we’re sorry dear,’ and with that Rose hugged both her parents goodbye and clambered onto the train with her trunk in toe to embark on her final year at Hogwarts.
She decided to first go and dump her trunk in the baggage cart and then head off to the Heads compartment to get ready for the brief to the other prefects. She also had another agenda – finding out who the new Head Boy was. Ever since she got her letter she had been curious as to who it was that she would be sharing her school life with, rather intimately, if what Amelia Thomas, her predecessor, had told her about the joint living accommodation, was true.
She walked along the train vaguely listening to the irrelevant chitter chatter that was going on between friends who had spent their summers apart when she thought back to her summer. It was brilliant, what with Victoire and Teddy’s new baby boy, Michael and Molly’s engagement party – that is Percy and Audrey’s daughter. She had loved spending time at the burrow with the family. It reminded her of when she was very little, before Hogwarts, spending the weekends with her grandparents. Whenever she returned the smell alone would take her back to the days when she used to play with dolls and longed to be older so she could go to Hogwarts with her other cousins. She missed those days. It was all much… simpler. When you’re young things don’t matter so much, you live for the moment, she thought to herself, and even though all of us remember when we wanted to be that much older, when you actually get there it’s not as great as it seems. Here she was, a young seventeen-year-old girl who had so much childishness inside that she just refused to let out but there and then she made the decision that this year would be different. Yes, of course she was still going to be responsible and conscientious Rose because that was who she was, but she’d also loosen up a bit and just enjoy her last year at school because like her mother said, she wasn’t going to be coming back after this.
She reached the door to the Heads compartment and walked inside, put her small bag down on a chair and rushed to the adjoined bathroom to change into her robes whilst she had the chance. As she took off her muggle clothes she heard the door of the compartment click open and before she knew it the bathroom door opened on to her when she was clad in only her bra and school skirt.
‘Oh God, I’m sorry. Shit.’
There, in front of Rose, stood a six foot tall, blonde haired boy with a well built body and a notorious reputation for being something of a ladies man. Rose gaped at Scorpius, opening and closing her mouth like a fish whilst Scorpius just stared at her looking her up and down. Rose, still unable to speak, instantly motioned with her finger for him to get out of the bathroom. Scorpius backed away slowly and shut the door with this foot. They simultaneously slid down the door on either side clearly both in a state of shock.
After quickly getting the rest of her clothes on she hoped that Scorpius had left by the time she came out but much to her dismay there he sat opposite her reading the latest edition of The Lucky Snitch, a popular Quidditch magazine. He looked up to her and his strikingly good-looking face broke into a devilishly handsome grin that would’ve send shivers down any girl’s spine. ‘Hey Gorgeous, miss me? How was your summer? By the looks of it you’ve been working out some, I just couldn’t… help but… notice…’ he was barely able to finish due to the fact that he couldn’t contain his laughter anymore and he was spurred on even more by the beetroot shade of Rose’s face.
‘That wasn’t funny Scor,’ she reprimanded ‘Quit being so immature,’ and with that she dropped down onto the seat and took a book out of her bag. They both managed to remain silent for only a few moments before they both slowly glanced over their copies to see each other and they simultaneously burst into fits of giggles.
After a good few minutes of crying their eyes out with laughter Rose managed to regain some of her breath and asked him ‘Oh gosh, so what were you even doing here in the first place?’ Scorpius simply puffed out his chest a bit more so she could see the shiny blue and bronze badge glinting in the light. ‘Scor you didn’t! You got Head Boy?! And you didn’t even tell me!!’
‘Well how was I supposed to write Red? I was stuck with my grandparents all summer; cue the sympathy, thank you very much. You know I would’ve written to my favourite girl if I could have don’t you baby?’ he said, making a face so genuine that it’d take a genius or a really good friend to figure out that he had used that line to get himself out of trouble innumerable times before. Lucky for Rose she happened to be both.
‘Scorpius, you loser, you seem to be forgetting that you’re talking to your best friend of nearly five years who is fully aware that you are simply trying to distract her, but let me tell you those puppy eyes don’t fool me’ she said and stuck her tongue out defiantly.
‘Okay okay I get it. You know all my womanizing ways and will not fall for them, doesn’t mean I’ll stop trying though’ He quickly dodged the book that Rose threw his way ‘Jeez woman, so I teased you a bit, no need for actually physical harm!
‘Yeah well you deserve it butthead’
Their ‘argument’ was interrupted by the door opening and entered in a hoard of young teenagers waiting for their briefing from the new Heads, some rather obviously bored, others much more eager. After introducing themselves, Rose and Scorpius went through some duty lists and let everyone know the usual stuff and before long everyone was filtering out of the carriages. ‘So my wonderful better half, would you care to join me in a hunt for the carriage where our friends await us?’
Rose scoffed at him and slapped away his offered arm, leading on ahead of them. ‘Although you know you’re totally right … I am so much better than you.’
‘Dream on, carrot top. I was only trying to charm you so you wouldn’t hassle me all year,’
‘Oh shut up, you twit’ Rose said laughingly ‘I can’t help this cursed hair just like you can’t help you’re name’
Scorpius feigned shock and offence, ‘you went to the name! How could you?!’ he then relaxed his face and smiled at her ‘And you know I like your hair, it’s all pretty and flow-y and not full of hair products that get in the way of a good snogging session’, with an added wink, for good measure.
‘Arghh, why does everything lead back to either girls or sex with you? Do you think of nothing else?’
‘Now tell me, Rosie dear, if that were true how do you explain the straight ‘O’s I get?’
They finally reached their carriage and opened the door. Instantly they recognised four of their closest friends and housemates. Ella Longbottom had the reserved and shy qualities of her father whilst maintaining the stunning beauty of her mother. Rose and her had known each other since they were infants but only really became close after they joined Hogwarts, partly due to the fact that Ella was a complete wallflower when growing up, whilst Rose was something more of a wild foghorn, but once at school together they instantly bonded and gave a little of their own personalities to each other.
Albus Potter was the ultimate sports prodigy. Not only was he the spitting image of his father but he had also gained his quidditch skills. He played seeker and had a well built physique. Therefore, it was not surprising that lots of girls fell for his good looks and charming personality. However, Albus was far more reserved than Scorpius and even though the two were very close, Albus preferred to stick to one girl for a while, being something of a romantic.
Maria Faulkner was in truth the resident minx whose alluring Hispanic looks mixed with her sultry personality were a fatal combination for any unsuspecting man she wanted to seduce; and seduce them she did, apart from the very few who were daring enough to refuse her, no names of course *cough* Albus *cough*. However, in spite of her feisty reputation, she was a caring and thoughtful person and did not hesitate for one moment in defending her friends. Initially, she hadn’t been friends with Rose and Ella but after a few months sleeping in the same dormitory they realised that she wasn’t as bad as she first seems and proved to be an invaluable friend.
Finally there was Charlie Summers. Something of a bookworm, he much preferred spending time in the library than chatting up girls, not that he wasn’t cute in that geeky way; he most definitely was. He just lacked a lot of confidence and didn’t think that that many people would be interested in him. Scorpius and Albus had initially taken him under their wing when it appeared no one wanted to be his friend but soon they realised that under that shy exterior Charlie was ballsier than a lot people and definitely not a pushover. He was open with his friends; it just took a little while getting him to open up.
‘Hello stranger and stranger-er’ Maria said to the two as they entered.
‘Ha ha how very witty of you. Well as long as I’m the stranger and she’s the stranger-er that’s fine by me’
‘Yes rather witty if I do say so myself’ she said as she gave Rose a hug and they all got reacquainted. ‘Anyway I don’t know what you two have been up to but we’re about 5 minutes away from the castle now so you’ve pretty much wasted the entire of our last journey together.’
‘Hey! How’d you know it was a wasted journey?’ Rose interjected.
‘She doesn’t’ Ella said with a smile ‘It’s just her way of saying ‘’aww I missed you guys!!’’’
The conversation was a mixture of talking about the up and coming quidditch season and the insane amount of work they all had this year till the entered the castle and Rose thought to herself ‘Gosh, this is the last time I’m going to be doing this. I am going to make this a year to remember’. With that she walked on into the Great Hall, catching Scorpius eye as she did so and both of them shared a smile.
