Chapter one: Rose’s Secret
“So, in 1769, Albeit Darling discovered to spell that would mend a broken arm...” Rose Weasley muttered to herself.
The blue eyed, red curly-haired girl sat there in the library in the intention of doing her History of Magic homework. It had been a week since they came back from their Christmas holidays and they already had tons of homework. All the teachers kept on nagging them about their O.W.L.s and that they have to be careful. Even before she came back her mother kept on reminding her about them and her father kept on telling her to beat Scorpius Malfoy.
Speaking of Scorpius Malfoy, he was the reason Rose couldn’t concentrate on the work in front of her, which was very rare for her. Rose had despised Malfoy in her first four years at Hogwarts. Every time he would walk past she would glare at him like she was told to. She heard from her Uncle Harry that his father was a death eater and he was her father, mother and Uncle Harry’s biggest enemy. But slowly, she started to disagree with what her father had said about him. She found out that Scorpius Malfoy was nothing like his father and he had no problem with muggle-borns even though he was in Slytherin.
But what really scared her the most is that she, Rose Weasley; the daughter of two thirds of the Golden Trio, fancied Scorpius Malfoy; the son of Draco Malfoy, her family’s loathed enemy.
‘Don’t get too friendly with him, though, Rosie.’
Her father’s voice was always there, lingering at the back of her mind, reminding her of what she was to Malfoy. But she couldn’t get him out of her mind. She started to fancy him in the end of her fourth year but never told her friends or her cousins. They would completely flip if she did.
Past all that, Scorpius Malfoy was extremely good looking, smart and the Slytherin seeker. His silverly blonde hair, grey eyes and charming smile is what most attracted the girls. Many girls flirted with him, thinking he might ask them out, but he had no interest in any of them. His last girlfriend was a Hufflepuff, which he broke up with in the middle of their previous year. Since then, he had not dated anyone. Unlike most girls, Rose liked him not because of his looks but on much more than that. But she never thought he would ever fall for her.
Surprisingly, he was friends with Rose’s favourite cousin, Albus Severus Potter. But apart from Albus, the rest of the Weasley clan didn’t like him at all. Especially Rose’s brother, Hugo, and James.
“Rose, are you alright?” said a voice. Rose jumped. She completely forgot that her best friend, Jasmine Yusra, was sitting next to her.
“Yea...I’m fine Jaz,” she answered, scribbling on her History of Magic essay.
“Are you sure? You seem to be thinking about something.” Jasmine asked in a concerned tone.
“I told you I’m fine,” Rose lied.
Jasmine was Arabian. She was very pretty; she had light green eyes and long straight shiny black hair. Many guys asked her out but she rejected all of them. And Rose knew why, Jasmine always had a soft spot for Albus but she never admitted it.
“Isn’t that girl ever gonna join us?” Jasmine said shaking her head. She was talking about their other best friend, Melissa Rivers, who was a muggle-born. Melissa was unfortunately to busy with her boyfriend.
“I suppose she’s too busy and doesn’t want to finish her homework,” Rose said, giggling.
“Do you even think she likes her boyfriend?” Jasmine whispered.
Rose shook her head. “I think she’s trying to make good old James jealous.”
“You think she likes James?”
“Yes. And I think James’ is trying way too hard to make her jealous by going out with Finnigan.” Rose answered matter-of-factly. Her best-friend and cousin have always tried too hard to impress each other.
“Anyway,” Jasmine started. “Have you finished you’re Herbology essay?”
“Yes. I’m doing History of Magic now; I just have 4 lines to finish the essay,” Rose continued writing.
“What!” Jasmine said so loudly and caused Madam Pince to shush them from afar. “I haven’t even started the History of Magic essay. So you’ve finished everything else?”
“Yeah...But you know, I’m really scared that I’ll fail all my exams.” Rose muttered miserably.
“Bloody hell Rose, you’ve got to be joking!” Jasmine pondered. “Just you wait until you get your 11 ‘outstanding’ O.W.L.s.”
Before Rose could answer, Jasmine added, “I think we should go, it’s nearly time for dinner and I’m starving.”
Rose realised that she was rather hungry too. “Ok, I guess we should go,” she got up to pack all her things.
As Rose and Jasmine were on their way to the Great Hall, someone bumped into Rose and caused all her books to fall. Rose looked up to see the girl she loathed so much, Jonquil Zabini; the daughter of Blaise Zabini and Pansy Parkinson. She was surrounded by all her stuck-up Slytherin friends.
“Watch where you’re going, Weasley! I wouldn’t want to be bumping into blood traitors!” Zabini warned viciously. She started dusting off her clothes as though she had just touched filth.
“Shut up, Zabini!” called a familiar voice. Rose turned around and saw Melissa coming. Her hazel eyes looked murderous.
“Oh look who’s talking!” Said Zabini, flipping her dark hair in a proud manner. “Don’t you dare talk to me that way you filthy little mudblood!”
Rose and Jasmine took out their wands in a flash and were about to curse Zabini, only to be stopped when they heard someone running to them.
Zabini’s face changed into shock. “Oh, er, erm, he-hello Scorpius, what are you doing here?” Zabini smiled, acting innocent as though nothing had happened.
At the mention of that name, Rose began to blush and turned to see the unnaturally good-looks of Scorpius Malfoy glaring at Zabini furiously.
“Don’t ever say that word again, Jonquil!” Scorpius said sharply.
“What word?” Zabini asked innocently.
“You know very well what I’m talking about,” Scorpius answered.
Zabini looked dumb-struck. She glared at them and stormed away without another word, her friends quickly followed her.
“Er...are you alright?” Scorpius suddenly asked, turning to Rose.
“Err, yeah. Yes. I’m fi-fine” Rose answered turning bright red. This is the times when she wished she had an invisibility cloak.
Scorpius’s grey eyes flickered. “Just don’t let Jonquil get away with it. I know she’s not very nice.” He told them and gave that charming smile which many girls swooned at. Rose was busy staring at him and didn’t realise he had got her books and bag from the floor.
“There you go,” he said handing them to Rose.
“Oh, er, thanks...” Rose muttered taking them as her stomach made a back flip.
“No problem.” he said, smirking. And with that, he flashed her a wink and walked into the Great Hall. Rose watched him leave and couldn’t stop smiling to herself. The three of them then followed him into the open doors.
The Great Hall with its four long house tables and its staff table set at the top of the room was decorated as usual with floating candles that made the plates below glitter and glow. As they reached the Gryffindor table Rose saw that Albus had left empty space for her, Jasmine and Melissa. They sat down and started to eat.
“Thanks for saving us spots Al,” Rose said grabbing some chicken legs. Albus who was busy talking to his friend Matt Thomas, turned around.
“When did you come?” he asked her, surprised. Rose tried her best to not laugh at his flabbergasted expression. His jet black hair was messy as usual and he wore the same wire-rimmed glasses on top of his green eyes.
“What took you use’ so long?” he asked warily, raising an eyebrow.
“We had a little chat with Jonquil Zabini,” said Melissa, brushing away her brown fringe. She was sitting on Rose’s left. Jasmine, who was in a deep shade of scarlet, was sitting far away from Albus. Jasmine was always acted like that around him.
Albus sighed. “Not that Zabini git again.”
Rose turned around to the Slytherin table to see Zabini in deep conservation with her friends. Rose had a feeling that they were talking about her, but shrugged it away.
“Rose! There you are! We were wondering where you were.” James’ voice popped up. He was sitting in front of her. He had his left arm around the shoulders of his girlfriend and winked at Melissa, who deliberately ignored him.
“Now you realise?” Rose muttered, shaking her head. She turned her head to see Hugo, Louis, Fred and Lily all sitting across from her.
“Ver su arv ses,” said Hugo whose mouth was full of food.
Rose glared at her brother. “Honestly Hugo, don’t speak with your mouth full!”
Before they knew it, all the food replaced to dessert and their plates became clean. After Rose and her friends finished, they headed off to the Gryffindor common room before anyone else even got up. For some reason, both her friends beckoned her to come up with them to the dormitory.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Melissa asked abruptly, after they had settled in. She was lying down on her bed.
Rose raised an eyebrow. ”Tell you what?” What was she talking about? She thought.
“That you fancy him,” answered Jasmine coming to sit next to Rose.
Rose started to blush. She didn’t know what to say. “Fancy wh-who?”
“Scorpius Malfoy.” answered Melissa, crossing her arms.
Rose turned away from their eager gazes. “I don’t fancy him. What were you guys thinking? Me fancy Malfoy?” Rose started to laugh shakily.
“We know you do, stop pretending,” Jasmine stated. “It was obvious you know. You should have seen the way you acted around him today.”
Rose didn’t know what to say. She was mortified.
“Well...I...” Rose looked at her hands, turning bright red. “OK. Fine. I-I do. Happy?”
Melissa grinned. “I knew it!” she and Jasmine squealed. “And when were you planning to tell us?”
“I wasn’t planning to...” Rose muttered.
Jasmine cocked an eyebrow. “And why is that?”
“Well...I only started fancying him at the end of last year...and besides he will never fall for me anyway. So just forget it.”
Melissa sat up. “Merlins beard Rose! Are you out of your mind! Didn’t you see the way he was talking to you today?”
“So...he is a nice person...he talks to everyone like that,” Rose said not seeing any difference.
“But he doesn’t act that way to any of the girls...if you were someone else, he’d probably not even come.” Jasmine declared, eying Rose carefully.
“Thanks for saying this, but I really don’t think I can see any difference,” Rose was hoping it was true though. “And besides, do you honestly think that he will fall for me out of all those other girls obsessed with him?”
Just as Melissa opened her mouth to answer, the door banged open and in came her cousin, Lily Potter.
“Sorry to disturb, guys.” Lily apologised quickly. “But Rose I need to ask you something. Are nargles real?" asked Lily eagerly.
“Blimey Lily, don’t tell me Lora or any of the Scamanders told you that. First the thestrals, and now this.” Rose shook her head. Lora, Lorcan and Lysander were Ravenclaws and they were their family friends. Their mother, Luna Lovegood, believed in all these things so they did too.
“It’s just that last time I asked dad if thestrals were real and he said yes and only people that have seen death could see it,” Lily said quickly, almost out of breath. “So I was wondering if nargles are real too.”
“Why don’t you ask Uncle Harry then?” Rose suggested. She didn’t know thestrals were real.
“Ok, great idea! I’ll owl him tomorrow morning!” said Lily breathlessly. She happily skipped out, her auburn hair dancing behind her.
Melissa’s eyes widened. “Blimey, I wonder what the next thing those Scamanders are going to come up with.”
