He burst through the library doors and Hermione was sitting doing her homework at the far end.
‘Hermione,’ he said in a low voice approaching her. ‘That diary; I managed to get the message from it.’
‘What?’ she asked dropping her quill but not bothering to pick it up. ‘What did it say?’
Harry explained about how the diary had sucked him in and showed him about Aragog and Hagrid.
‘Hagrid can’t have done it,’ said Hermione disbelievingly. ‘I don’t believe it. I can’t believe it.’
‘Neither can I,’ said Harry miserably. ‘I don’t trust this Riddle guy. There’s just something about him…’
‘Yeah,’ said Hermione. ‘Could we possibly go back into the diary? Both of us.’
‘It’s worth a try,’ said Harry, then he pulled the diary out of his bag and put it onto the table.
He picked up Hermione’s quill and wrote
This is Harry Potter.
Some other words appeared from Riddle.
Hello Harry Potter.
Harry glanced at Hermione.
Could you bring me back in? My friend wants to view it too. She can’t believe Hagrid did it and I wanted to prove it.
‘What?’ hissed Hermione.
‘He’s not right in the head,’ said Harry. ‘I’m trying to get him to let us in.’
Yes Harry Potter, you and your girlfriend can see my evidence.
Both Harry and Hermione didn’t have time to blush, the diary was glowing, Harry leant towards Hermione and grabbed her hand.
She looked pleased, and opened her mouth to say something but was interrupted, they were sucked into the diary.
Tom Riddle walked up the steps and bumped into Dumbledore.
‘What are you doing out late Tom?’ Dumbledore asked, his eyes glittering behind his half moon glasses.
‘Thinking sir,’ said Riddle, ‘if these attacks don’t stop, if the attacker isn’t found, would the school close down?’
Dumbledore eyed him suspiciously, ‘it is definite that if the attacker isn’t found and the attacks don’t stop, the school will inveterately close down. Is there anything wrong Tom?’
Riddle hesitated convincingly, ‘well, yes,’ he said. ‘I’ll have to live in that orphanage full time. I don’t think I can live with it.’
‘Is there anything you want to tell me Tom?’ asked Dumbledore, his twinkling blue eyes boring into Riddles cold grey ones.
Riddle glared at him and said, ‘no sir. Nothing at all.’
‘Go to bed Tom,’ said Dumbledore, ‘and be careful.’
Tom turned from him and headed down the stairs, when he was out of sight of Dumbledore he headed for the owlery immediately.
He opened the door and a large boy with very long, messy hair covering his also large face, he was leaning over a large trunk.
‘Hagrid,’ said Riddle and the boy jumped violently.
‘Tom,’ said Hagrid. ‘What brings you here?’
‘I’m sorry Hagrid,’ said Riddle not sounding sorry at all. ‘But I couldn’t let it go on. I really didn’t want to be the one to do this, but I feel I have no choice.’
‘Tom, what are you talking about?’ said Hagrid nervously.
‘That creature you have is attacking all of the students,’ said Riddle.
Hagrid’s nervousness quickly turned to fury.
‘Aragog would never attack anyone!’ He said a little too loudly, Riddle grinned maliciously.
‘Hagrid, you cannot keep that creature here any longer, I’m sorry. But this will mean expulsion. Headmaster Dippet will be so disappointed in you. Hagrid, I’m personally ashamed of you.’
‘Tom no!’ said Hagrid, ‘you can’t – this is the only place I’m really happy. My dads dead and my mums left. Please Tom, I didn’t do it, I swear.’
‘Me too Hagrid,’ said Tom his cold grey eyes narrowing. ‘But one of us has to go. And it might as well be you.’
‘What d’you mean?’ asked Hagrid, ‘Tom? Did you do this?’
‘No, of course not,’ said Tom convincingly though both Harry and Hermione could see something flickering at the back of his eyes.
‘Don’t do this to me Tom,’ begged Hagrid. ‘I didn’t do it. I swear!’
‘Bye Hagrid,’ said Tom, and he turned and left, Harry knew he had gone to see Headmaster Dippet.
The shining light appeared above him, Harry automatically wrapped his arm around Hermione’s waist, she wrapped her arms around his waist, though placing one of her arms on the back of his neck.
They were sucked out of the diary, Harry landed on the floor, Hermione inches face mere inches away from his.
‘Hagrid can’t have done it,’ whispered Hermione, her sweet scented breath fogging up his glasses.
She realized what she’d done and she blushed. ‘Sorry,’ she said taking his glasses off and wiping them and putting them back on him. It was then they realized how close they were.
Harry’s hands were still wrapped around Hermione’s waist, and Hermione’s hand was on his waist and the other was on the back of his neck.
‘Hagrid can’t have done it,’ murmured Hermione as they both sat up, ‘I don’t believe it Harry, and you can’t either.’
‘I don’t,’ said Harry squeezing her hand tightly, ‘I know Hagrid, he wouldn’t do that, especially with the risk of getting expelled from Hogwarts, like he said, that was the place he was the most happy.’
‘So that’s why he got expelled in his third year,’ said Hermione, ‘for something he didn’t do, and Dumbledore knew it, that’s why he convinced Dippet to stay here.’
Hermione bit her lip thoughtfully, Harry grinned, ‘what?’ asked Hermione smiling back at him.
‘Nothing,’ said Harry grinning back at her again, Hermione couldn’t help but let out a large grin.
‘C’mon,’ Hermione said, ‘let’s got find Ron. We need to tell him.’ She got to her feet and headed for the door, she stopped. ‘C’mon,’ she said and Harry grinned, he jumped up and followed her out of the door.
