“What are you waiting for? GO! GO!” exclaimed Kingsley.
Lupin sprang to his feet. All his worries and troubles seemed to just fizzle away as a wonderful euphoria took hold of him. He was flooded with an excitement the extent of which he had not felt in years. It was as if he was seventeen again and he was waiting in the Shrieking Shack for Sirius, James and Peter, so they could embark on their next adventure.
He tripped over his chair but got up clumsily and ran out the back door.
“Promise you’ll send word to us all at Muriel’s! Everyone will be dying to know if it’s a boy or a girl!” shouted Kingsley.
“I will!” Lupin called back, running through the grass, scaling the wall and then landing on the other side and disapparating.
“Dora?” he shouted as he burst through the front door his heart jumping around like mad in his chest. His stomach too was squirming with excitement.
“Up here Remus!” called Andromeda from the landing.
He ran up the stairs. He seemed to be floating. He felt lighter than air.
“Wait ‘til you see him! He’s gorgeous!” exclaimed Andromeda smiling at him. It was the first time he had seen her smile since Ted’s death.
Lupin walked across the landing hardly able to contain his excitement. He stopped at the door of the bedroom feeling the cool hardness of the doorframe in his hands.
Tonks was sitting on the bed with a bundle of blankets cradled in her arms. She looked simply radiant.
He stepped forward, stumbling over his own feet. He was becoming as clumsy as Tonks.
“There is some one here who wants to meet you,” she said beaming at him.
Lupin sat down on the bed beside Tonks. She held out the bundle and he carefully took it in his arms.
There smiling up at him was the face of his son. He didn’t have much hair but the little he did have was black. He had beautiful clear blue eyes that seemed to light up. His tiny hand reached up touching the buttons on Lupin’s shirt.
Tentatively Lupin stretched out his hand to touch the baby’s tiny fist. His skin was so smooth and so soft. Lupin looked down at his son, soaking up every inch of him. He was absolutely faultless. Lupin loved every bit of him, his round little face, his tiny nose, his little fists that batted the air and his clear innocent blue eyes.
How long he sat there staring at his son he did not know. He couldn’t take his eyes off him, he felt as if he could sit there staring at him forever.
“What should we call him?” asked Tonks
With a little difficulty Lupin tore his eyes from the baby and looked up.
“What about Ted, after you father?”
Lupin saw Andromeda’s face light up. He didn’t think it was possible but the smile on her face grew even larger.
“And Remus, after his father?” suggested Tonks still smiling.
“Teddy Remus Lupin,” repeated Lupin, he couldn’t help but smile. He was happier than he had been in his life. “You know Dora. I quite like the sound of that!”
Tonks leaned forward and kissed him.
“I think I’ll leave you three alone,” said Andromeda walking out of the room.
Lupin handed the baby back to Tonks. Teddy stared up at the two of them, getting to know their faces, the faces of his parents.
Lupin ran the back of his finger down Teddy’s cheek and then rubbed his head. His hair felt like silk. Tonks tickled his chin and he just smiled up at the two of them.
“He’s gorgeous!” said Tonks looking down at him.
“I know,” Lupin smiled, “he’s absolutely perfect.”
He too watched Teddy’s little eyes blink up at them and then slowly he drifted off to sleep. His breathing was soft and gentle.
Lupin took him away from the bed and laid him carefully into the crib in the centre of the room. It had been Tonks’s crib. The one she had had when she was a baby.
He looked down and watched his son sleeping. He had never seen a more beautiful sight. Still smiling broadly he came back over and sat beside Tonks.
“How are you feeling?”
“Couldn’t be better,” she replied.
“You’re a father now Remus,” she whispered leaning in close to him. He looked at her for a moment and then he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her, feeling the warmth of her lips on his.
They broke apart when Andromeda came in carrying a tray with a bottle of wine and three goblets on it. She handed one to Lupin and one to Tonks, then hoisted hers into the air and said proudly, “To Teddy Remus Lupin!”
The three of them clanged their goblets together and raised them to the ceiling in a toast.
They then drained their goblets each with the same happy smile on their face.
“You know what, Dora?” said Lupin happily, “I think he looks just like you.”
Tonks laughed, “No Remus, he looks more like you.”
“I think it’s a mixture of both of you,” smiled Andromeda.
Then the three of them got up and went over to the crib where Teddy slept soundly unaware that all three of them were watching him.
“Does his hair look ginger to you?” asked Tonks
“It does…” said Lupin examining it more closely, “but I could have sworn it was black…”
“You know Nymphadora, your hair started to change colour from the day you were born!” said Andromeda reminiscently.
“Look’s like he’s a Metamorphmagus just like his mother!” said Lupin proudly looking at Tonks.
She simply beamed back at him. Lupin was relieved about at this. His son was not a werewolf. He was a Metamorphmagus. He then stared down at his little boy, he couldn’t get enough of him. He reminded Lupin of Harry as a baby. Then a thought entered his mind, the most brilliant thought he had ever had. After all if it hadn’t been for Harry looking out for him, Lupin would not be here standing staring down at his son.
“Dora?” he asked with a broad grin on his face, “what would you say to making Harry Godfather?”
“Remus! That’s a great idea!” exclaimed Tonks, “I can’t think of anyone better!”
Lupin just beamed back at her. He hadn’t smiled this much in all his life. But his smile faded a little. How was he going to find Harry to tell him this great news?
“Remus,” yawned Tonks, “I think I’ll go to sleep for a while. You should go to Muriel’s and tell Molly and Arthur the good news.”
Lupin then remembered his promise to Kingsley and thought that going to Muriel’s was a great idea. He had not spoken to the Weasleys in a while. You never know they might even have heard from Harry, Ron and Hermione.
He headed for the bedroom door but then stopped and turned around. He looked back at Tonks and then ran over and wrapped his arms around her and kissed her once more.
“I love you,” he said quietly.
“I love you too,” she replied kissing him back.
Lupin then helped Tonks get back into bed and walked downstairs. He grabbed his cloak and flung it around himself as he went out the front door.
The cool night air blew against his face and it only lifted his spirits. He had a strong urge to shout out to the whole world telling them all about the birth of his son. He then reached the garden gate, pushed it open and dissaparated.
“Who are you and what do you want?” said George dully or was it Fred? Lupin couldn’t tell.
“It is I, Remus John Lupin, a werewolf married to Nymph- ” but he was cut off there by a squeal from behind the door.
“It’s Remus! Open the door! Quick!” said Molly excitedly.
The door clicked open and Lupin was greeted by a hall full of people. There were Molly, Arthur, Fred, George, Ginny, Muriel and Kingsley. Then oddly enough there was Mr. Ollivander. All of them were staring up at Lupin waiting impatiently for the news he was about to tell them.
He stepped forward. He was bursting to tell them all.
“It’s a boy! It’s a boy!”
The room burst into congratulations. He was being patted on the back and hugged. Fred and George ruffled his hair shouting excitedly. He then found himself being steered into the sitting room as Arthur went off to fetch a bottle of wine. Lupin just stood there beaming around at all of them.
Muriel however sat on the couch with her lips pursed. Lupin knew that she strongly disagreed to the Weasleys being friends with him and he had a funny feeling that she did not like having a werewolf in her house.
“What did you call him?” squeaked Ginny.
“Ted, after Tonks’s father,” Lupin replied, “Teddy Remus Lupin!” He became more and more proud each time he said the name.
Arthur returned with two bottles of wine and several goblets, which he passed around and then everyone raised their goblets in high toast to Teddy Remus Lupin.
“A great wizard in the making, eh?” winked Fred.
“What does he look like? Is he gorgeous?” asked Molly. She nearly had tears in her eyes.
“I think he looks like Dora and she thinks he looks like me. Though Andromeda says it’s a mixture of both of us. You should see him Molly. I have never seen anything so perfect in all my life. He has these wonderful bright blue eyes,” said Lupin proudly then added, “I’ll send you all a few pictures when we get around to taking them.”
Arthur refilled all their glasses and they all sat down. Suddenly Muriel shrieked, as she appeared to have sat on one of Fred and George’s joke wands, which had just turned into what Lupin thought resembled a wand shaped cactus. In the corner of his eye Lupin saw Fred and George sniggering. Obviously they had taken it upon themselves to drive Muriel up the wall. She shot the two of them a filthy look before returning to her goblet of wine.
“You’ll have to go and tell Bill and Fleur!” said Molly, “and Harry, Ron and Hermione of course!”
Lupin nearly dropped his glass, “You’ve seen Harry, Ron and Hermione?”
“Well, no, we haven’t seen them but they are staying with Bill and Fleur at the moment. Bill was here earlier to drop off Mr. Ollivander and told us.”
Lupin felt excited again. He would definitely be paying a visit to Shell Cottage on the outskirts of Tinworth tonight.
There was another round of drinks and everyone chatted delighted at the news Lupin had told them.
“How is Tonks doing?” asked Molly.
“She is a little tired but other than that she is fine. She is just happier than I have ever seen her,” Lupin replied with a smile on his face.
“And you too Remus, look happier than I have seen you in a long time. It’s as if you are back laughing with Sirius again!” said Molly.
Lupin couldn’t remember the last time he had felt as happy as this. As far as he could recall he had never been as happy as this. He was a father! He had a son!
There was another round of drinks and then Lupin had to go. He still wanted to go to Bill and Fleur’s but he also wanted to get back to Tonks and his little Teddy.
He bid them all goodnight. Molly hugged him telling him to tell Tonks that they all send their love. Then Lupin left the house and ventured forth into the night. A fierce wind had blown up. He pulled his cloak more tightly around himself in an attempt to keep out the wind. He then turned on the spot and found himself staring up at the white washed Shell Cottage.
He knocked on the door. He could hear movements on the other side. Then there was a moment’s silence before he heard Bill’s muffled voice, asking who was at the door. Remus responded with the pre-arranged answer, so Bill would know it was him, and not a Death Eater impersonating him. Once Bill was happy with the answer, he opened the door, and Lupin stepped forward but tripped over the doorstep. He then straightened up and looked around the room. He could see Bill, Fleur, Harry, Ron, Hermione and surprisingly enough, Dean Thomas and Luna Lovegood. There was also a Goblin standing a dark corner of the room.
“It’s a boy!” he cried aloud, “we’ve named him Ted, after Dora’s father!”*1
Hermione shrieked and before he knew it, everyone was congratulating him as sighs of relief crept across their faces. Obviously they had thought that he was about to tell them bad news. Both Fleur and Hermione squealed.
His eyes then fell on Harry and before he could stop himself he strode over and hugged him. He was just delighted to see Harry safe and well.
“You’ll be Godfather?” said Lupin as he released Harry.*2
Harry stared at Lupin, not knowing what to say. He simply stammered and agreed. Clearly he was delighted at the idea of being a Godfather. Lupin couldn't have been happier.
“You’ll ‘av to join uz for a drink!” said Fleur as Bill went to fetch some wine.
Lupin looked around the room. Harry, Ron and Hermione looked thinner and more care worn than when he had seem them last and Luna had a gaunt look in her eyes as if she had been locked up for a long period of time. Even still Lupin was happy to see them all alive and well.
“To Teddy Remus Lupin!” and since Fred wasn’t here to say it Lupin added, “a great wizard in the making!” *3
Fleur began asking him what who Teddy looked like, and Remus tried his best to explain how the little lad shared characteristics with this mother and his father, though bizarrely kept changing the colour of his hair.
Lupin drained his goblet and Bill moved to refill it. Everyone wanted to stay, as his good news had brought them all out of themselves, but as much as he wanted to, he couldn't. He had to get back to his new-born son.
Refusing another goblet of wine, he put on his cloak and began to say goodbye. He gave Hermione, Fleur and Luna a hug beaming at each of them. Afterwards he went and shook hands with Bill, Ron, Dean and Harry. He paused for a second longer shaking Harry’s hand. He wanted to get a good look at him, the Godfather of his son. Then still smiling broadly he went outside into the howling wind and disapparated.
