Last Chapter: Remus stood up to get a better look at him. His hazel eyes grew wide in recognition, and he dropped his newspaper.
“Harry?” Remus croaked.
Chapter Two: Discovering
Harry and Hermione looked up, and Harry stared in shock at Remus. Hermione pulled him down, and they walked towards Remus.
“Hi Mr. Lupin,” Hermione said quietly. “I’d like you to meet my new friend Harry.”
“Hello,” said Harry. “I’m sorry, but have we met before? You look familiar.”
That snapped Remus out of his daze. He grabbed Harry up in a great bear hug. “Harry… it’s been years… You’re all grown up…”
Harry, who had squirmed out of the hug, looked at Remus again. “HAVE I met you before?”
“I used to be best friends with your parents. Before they died, I would visit you everyday. But you were just a baby, you probably don’t remember,” Remus explained.
“Your parents died? Harry I’m so sorry,” Hermione said sympathetically.
“It’s okay Hermione. They died in a car crash when I was one, so I don’t really remember them,” Harry replied.
“Who told you your parents died in a car crash?” Remus asked, looking quite angry.
“My aunt and uncle,”
“Harry, they lied to you. You parents were murdered.” Remus stopped at the small gasp emitted by Hermione. “An evil man named Voldemort killed them on Halloween 7 years ago.”
“So- I didn’t get my scar from a shard of glass?” Harry asked, showing Remus his scar.
“Here- come over here,” Remus pointed to a nearby empty field. “I don’t want to risk being overheard.”
Remus led the two children onto the grassy field. Harry and Remus sat down, while Hermione stood, still as a statue. Remus was surprised at how small she was- he was still quite taller than her sitting down, and she looked so frail.
“The reason you have that scar Harry, is when your parents were killed, Voldemort tried to kill you too. You see Harry, nobody knows, but the way Voldemort killed your parents, nobody has ever survived. Nobody that is, except you. Some people even call you the boy-who-lived.” Remus explained.
Harry and Hermione’s eyes looked ready to pop out of their heads. “So, did my parents get stabbed to death or shot or what?” Harry asked, looking quite overwhelmed.
“Actually Harry, they died from a killing curse,”
If possible, Hermione’s brown eyes grew even wider.
“But curses aren’t real are they? That’s like witchcraft, and my mum and dad told me witches and wizards weren’t real,” Hermione said quietly. She looked at Remus in fear when he gave her a look of anger. “I’m sorry; children shouldn’t speak out of turn.”
“It’s not that Hermione, it’s just- I don’t know if I agree with what your parents said. I mean, most people I know are witches and wizards. Harry’s one.”
Hermione looked ready to faint. Harry just looked at Remus in awe. “I am? How?”
“Your parents. You see, I went to a magical school- Hogwarts; you’ll go there when you’re older. That’s where I met James and Lily. James came from a very distinguished pureblood family. Lily, however, was a muggle born,” Remus said.
“Excuse me Mr. Lupin, but what’s a muggle?” Hermione asked.
“A muggle is a person who couldn’t do magic if their life depended on it,” Remus explained.
“So, basically, it would be someone like me?” she asked, looking quite sad.
“You never know Hermione, you could be a witch. I mean, Lily’s parents thought witches had ‘green skin and warts’ before Lily found out she was a witch- and Lily was top of our class.”
“Oh my gosh!” Hermione shrieked. “I’m really late- I’ll you see you tomorrow. Bye Mr. Lupin. Bye Harry.”
She ran out of the park entrance faster than Remus thought a person her size could go.
“That was odd,” Remus stated.
“Yes- but she is quite odd, wearing long sleeves in this heat. She’s really quiet and shy, but she’s a genius- she just doesn’t flaunt her intelligence around like Kimberly Basset does,” Harry said.
“She so well mannered, but seems so outspoken. Something about her reminds me of someone…,” Remus said.
“Who?” Harry asked, his eyes sparkling with inquisitiveness.
“Your mum. I remember the first time I saw her on the train, Lily looked so small and timid. Then, James tried to prank her, and I thought she was going to hex him to death!” Remus laughed.
“Hexing? My mum and dad had a hexing fight the first day they met each other? Did they not like each other?”
“James and Lily despised each other. I mean, James was a jerk to Lily, and I’m not surprised that she turned him down so many times. But, eventually, James saw the error of his ways and they got together. Then, in a couple of years, they had you,” Remus explained.
“Really? They seemed like nice people.”
“They were. Lily and James were probably the best friends anyone could ever ask for,” Remus stated.
“I’d better go- it’s getting dark,” Harry said, eyeing the fading sun.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Harry.”
“Alright. Goodbye Remus.”
Harry ran out of the park, and when he turned on Magnolia Crescent, he could have sworn he heard a young girls screams.
The next day, (which was the weekend) Hermione bolted out of the house as fast as she could. Her dad did it again, and her parents hadn’t woken up yet. (Their dentistry opened late on the weekends.)
Unfortunately, Hermione was the first one there, so she just sat on top of the monkey bars and waited. After 10 minutes, she became worried, so she was about to jump down. Before she could however, she heard a voice call her name. This startled her, and she fell.
“Hermione!” Remus said urgently. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?” he asked, slowly inching toward her.
“I’m fine, really- It’s no big deal-,” Hermione said, backing away from him slowly.
“Are you sure? I mean, I could help fix cuts or something. Here, let me look,” Remus put out his hand and reached towards Hermione to look her over.
He didn’t, unfortunately, see the startled, scared look in her eye, and kept on. When he had almost reached her arm, she had curled herself into a fetal position.
As soon as his fingers touched her skin, a wall of fire separated her from Remus. She looked at him, her eyes wide. “Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry! Did I hurt you? Are you okay?”
While she was babbling, Remus was looking at her in awe. He had never seen anyone so young produce a magical shield so powerful. “Hermione! It’s okay! I’m okay!” Remus said.
“I’m so sorry! Mummy says I need to control myself,” Hermione said quietly.
“Hermione, there’s no way you could keep all that magic bottled up.”
“Magic? What do you mean?”
“Hermione, that thing you just produced was a form of accidental magic. You’re a witch!”
She gazed at Remus with wide eyes. Her mouth went dry. ‘I’m a witch?’ she thought. All the weird things happening over the years suddenly made sense. Then it hit her. What would her parents think?
A VERY IMPORTANT AUTHOR’S NOTE! PLEASE READ! : I’m SO SO SO SO sorry I haven’t updated in a long time, but (I know you hate excuses) I recently found out that one of my best BEST friends is moving. I’ve known him since kindergarten, and this has really effected me because another one of my Best friends moved over the summer. I should be updating soon, but because of the holidays, it could be a little longer. Also, my beta and I came up with a few questions that we thought people might want to know the answer to. So here you go-
Some F.A.Q.’s about When the Sun sets
Q. What ships are in this story?
A. So far, the only decided ship is Harry/Hermione. If anyone has any ideas, for more ships (that don’t include Harry or Hermione with someone else) I’m open to suggestions.
Q. How old are Harry and Hermione?
A. In MY story, Hermione is younger than Harry. So, Hermione is 7, and Harry is 8. They are both in 3rd grade, because Hermione’s birthday is September 19th.
Q. Is Harry’s home situation the same as it was in the books?
A. Actually, in this story, The Dursley’s treat Harry worse than they did in the books (and that’s pretty bad)
If anyone has any more questions (that won’t spoil the plot) PLEASE ASK! Also, if anyone would be kind enough to make a banner PLEASE tell me in a review. Speaking of reviews, Please leave one! And no FLAMES! Thanks!
