Alli stepped into the fireplace and was transported to her house, it felt like a rollercoaster ride with flashing lights, just as she started to feel dizzy the ride stopped and she was standing in the living room of her home in Australia. She stepped out just in time for her mom to come through. Alli quickly ran upstairs to her room and changed into her favourite white mini skirt and a bright red off the shoulder shirt, she then grabbed her camera and mobile phone and called her best friend, Jake.
“Guess who?” Alli said, sitting on her bed.
“Alli? Where the hell have you been? And what was up with that sad excuse for an explanation you sent me? ‘Mom suddenly wanted to go on vacation to England, I’ll be back soon’?! That’s a shit lie, even for you.” Jake said on the other line.
“I’ll explain it all to you soon. I’m coming over now.” Alli said, while putting her stuff into her purse.
“Hell yeah I’m here. I’ll be there in 10 minutes, call everyone and tell them I’m coming; I’ll text Bobby and tell him… actually, meet me at the park.” Alli said hanging up and texting her boyfriend, Bobby, while skipping downstairs to where Hermione and Draco were standing.
“Hey, I’m going to go over to Jake’s.” Alli said before walking out the front door.
“Okay, call me if you’re out past 10.” Alli heard her mom say behind her. Alli slowly walked down her street towards the park while finishing her text to Bobby.
To: Bobby <3
Msg: Hey babe, I’m home. Meet me @ the park. XoX Alli
After Alli pressed send, she jogged down her street towards the park, she could already see Jake’s figure on the swing set as she got closer, she quietly sneaked up behind him and pulled the swing out from under him while shouting “BOO!”. Alli cracked up with laughter as she saw Jake fall to the sand in fright.
“Nice, very nice.” Jake said sarcastically, getting up, and giving her a hug.
“Are you going to tell me what happened then?” Jake asked as Alli sat down on the swing next to him.
“If I told you, I’d have to kill you.” Alli joked while kicking the sand underneath her feet.
”Seriously Alli, where’ve you been?” Jake asked again.
“It’s a secret. I’ll tell you everything later, here comes everyone.” Alli said, watching as Sarah, Janice and Bobby came up.
“Alli!” Janice and Sarah screamed, running to her and giving her big hugs, while Bobby slowly walked towards her while smiling.
”Hey, I’ve only been gone a week.” Alli said laughing.
“Hey.” Bobby said, reaching Alli and kissing her. Alli wrapped her arms around him a deepened the kiss, oblivious to everyone around them. They stayed like that for a couple of seconds before Jake cleared his throat.
“Oops sorry guys, got carried away.” Alli said, blushing, “Anyway… where should we go?”
“We could go to the beach, the Summer Madness festival is here this week.” Janice said.
“Oh my gosh, I forgot about that! Let’s go!” Alli said, grabbing Bobby’s hand and running towards the beach. The good thing about living in a small town was that everything was a 10 minute walk away. When they got to the beach, Alli stopped and smiled. The beach was full of bright lights, every ride that she loved as a child was there, from the Farris wheel to the petting zoo. As her friends caught up, Alli ran towards the Farris Wheel with Bobby still holding her hand.
“Come on!” Alli said, laughing. She had gone to the Summer Madness Festival every year since she was one and her favourite ride was the Farris Wheel. Her and Bobby paid and sat onto one of the carriages. The ride started and Alli looked out over the festival and onto the ocean.
“I love it up here.” Alli said, smiling and looking over to Bobby, who was looking at her with a smile on his face.
“I missed you.” He said, leaning over and kissing her softly.
“Yeah, it was weird not being here.” Alli said, looking at the ocean again. When Bobby kissed her, the sudden image of James popped into her head. She shook her head slightly and tried to push the image out of her mind, but it kept coming back up.
“What’s up, you’re usually more talkative.” Bobby said looking questioning into her eyes.
“Nothing, I’m just glad to be home” Alli said, smiling at him. When the ride finished, Bobby bought Alli some cotton candy and they walked around the festival, talking. They all hung out at the festival until about 10. Before they left Alli took Bobby’s hand and they walked along the beach, Alli took a couple of deep breaths before she started.
“Bobby?” She said, trying to psyche herself up, “We need to talk.”
“What’s up?” He asked.
“I think we need to break up.” Alli said, she had been thinking about it since before she came home, she was moving away to England and long distance relationships never worked. She knew that it’d be too hard to try to make it work and she already had enough problems on her plate.
”Okay… do I get an explanation?” Bobby asked, there was a slight edge to his voice and Alli took a couple of seconds to respond.
“I’m moving to England. The only reason I came back was to say goodbye. I don’t think it’d be fair to either of us to keep this relationship going while I’m thousands of miles away.” Alli said, trying to catch his eyes.
“I guess that makes sense.” Bobby said, looking away.
“I know this’ll sound really cheesy and stuff, but I really want to be friends still. I mean, even though I’m leaving, I don’t want to leave here with someone hating me.”
“I don’t hate you Alli. I’m just sad that you have to leave.” Bobby said sighing.
“So… friends?” Alli asked.
“Friends.” Bobby said, giving her a hug. “We’d better get back. Everyone’s going home.”
After they all split up, Alli and Jake walked home together. They had known each other since they were babies and they were the best of friends. Alli considered him more of a brother than a friend. Their houses were a couple of doors down from each other, so whenever one of them felt sad about something, the other was always there to cheer him/her up.
“Hey, can I sleep over tonight? For old time’s sake?” Alli asked Jake as they started to walk onto their street.
“Yeah, we can go ask my mom.” Jake said, smiling at her, “What’s wrong?”
“…I just broke up with Bobby.” Alli said, looking down with tears in her eyes.
“What? Why?” Jake asked, as they walked into his house. As soon as they got in, they saw Jake’s mom, Laura.
“Alli! When did you get back? Is your mom back?” Laura asked when she saw Alli.
“Yeah, she’s at home. Hey, can I sleep over here tonight?” Alli asked.
“Of course you can honey.” Laura said noticing the look on her face, “I just got home to pick up some things from Scars, I think I’ll pop over to yours to convince your mom to come with me.”
“Come on, we can talk in my room.” Jake said, getting some Pepsi’s and bringing them upstairs.
As they walked into his room, Jake passed Alli a Pepsi and they sat on his bed with a pack of cards. They sat on his bed and started playing cards for a couple of minutes in silence.
“So… what happened?” Jake asked, looking into her eyes with a questioning stare.
“If I tell you, I’ll have to start at the beginning. It’s really long and complicated and you have to promise not to tell a soul. It’s a really big secret.”
“Like who you had a crush on in grade 4? Because that was a really big secret too!” Jake joked.
“Bigger. Okay… first…you know how when we were little and we used to pretend I was a witch because all of that freaky stuff I used to do?” Alli asked.
“Well… it’s true. Hit me.” Alli said, referring to the cards.
“What is?” Jake said, passing her another card before looking at her with a confused expression.
“I’m a witch.”
“You’re shitting me. Whatever Alli.” Jake said, laughing.
“I’m not kidding… look, I guess I have to start with what happened last week. Ok… I was at home, and mom just got home, and she told me and Tom that we’re magical. I didn’t believe her at all and she sent us up to our room to go to bed. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Well, anyway. The next day I was just sitting on the couch watching TV and there was this knock at the door. So I went and opened it and this guy in weird clothing was just standing there, with a kind of smirk on his face… well at first it was confusion I think, but he quickly changed it. The weird thing about him was that he looked just like me! The same blond hair and blue eyes, except he’s like totally old. Well anyways, mom came to the door and I could see the fear cross her face and she told me to go into the house, I was totally confused, but I went into the house and a couple of minutes later, mom slammed the door in the guys face and ran to me and Tom, saying something about getting out of there. So she took our arm and like transported (or something) us to this castle. She then told us to run. We did but we didn’t make it to the castle because… well I don’t really know what happened but whatever. Anyways, get this, the next day I met my father.“
“Wait what? You’re father? I thought you didn’t know who that was!” Jake said, remembering the conversation they had a couple of years ago, when Alli told him that she didn’t think her father was really Ron Weasley.
“I know! And I was right! So the next day, I woke up and mom was talking to a guy that looked exactly like me! … well not exactly, but the same blond hair and blue eyes!”
“…the guy that attacked you?” Jake asked.
“No, this guy was around mom’s age! So I asked him if he was my dad.”
“Always the subtle one.” Jake said sarcastically.
“Hey! It works. Hit me.” Alli said, sticking out her tongue before continuing, “So I asked him and he said yes! It turns out that 16 years ago, my mom and he had a one night stand! So then I went for a walk with him and he told me everything, how the guy that attacked my family was actually his father who’s totally evil and used to be a follower of this like evil wizard and how, even though the evil wizard is dead, his father still believes in his ways and wants to be the new evil guy.”
“What’s your dad’s name?” Jake asked.
“Draco Malfoy. I win.” Alli said, showing him her cards.
“That’s a weird name.” Jake said he started shuffling the cards again.
“Yeah, no kidding me. It’s like a whole different culture! Most of the names are totally messed up, like his dad’s name is Lucius and the headmaster of Hogwarts’ name is Dumbleydork or something.” Alli said, laughing.
“So… what’s going to happen now?” Jake asked.
Alli sighed and turned her head towards the wall, “I’m moving over there.” She said in a whisper, refusing to look into his eyes.
“What?!” Jake almost screamed, standing up, “Alli, you can’t just move over there! You have a life here, and friends! And me! Alli, you’re my best friend! What am I going to do without you?”
Alli looked up at the last part of his outbreak. She could see the pain in his face and she tried to reason with him “I need to go there for school! I need to learn how to control my powers! And I’ll visit and be here during holidays!”
“I don’t want to hang with you just during school holidays.” Jake said, looking down.
“Jake. You know you’re my best friend and if I could bring you I would, but I can’t. You just have to remember that all you have to do to contact me is send a letter.” Alli said, getting up and giving him a hug.
“What century are we living in?” Jake said, half smiling.
”You have no idea.” Alli said, laughing and sitting back down as he passed her her cards.
“So, is that why you broke up with Bobby? The long distance thing?” Jake asked.
“Yeah… there’s that.” Alli said, blushing slightly.
“Oh! So there’s a boy is there?” Jake said, pretending to be flamboyantly gay, “Do tell, Darling.”
“Shut up.” Alli said, blushing more.
“Ok, you’re the colour of an apple. Who’s got you blushing this much?” Jake asked her, laughing.
“His name is James. And don’t start, nothing will come out of it.” Alli said.
“Hmmm… you’ve always had a thing for guys named James, take James Warwick for instance, or James Lafferty.” Jake said, laughing.
“James Warwick was in our class in kindergarden and he used to pick his nose!” Alli said laughing.
“I think he still does…” Jake said, looking as though he was thinking hard.
“Shut up” Alli said, laughing, “And James Lafferty is an actor!”
“An actor that you said you’d anything just to meet, including lick his feet.” Jake said laughing.
“I didn’t say that… oh wait… maybe I did…” Alli said, laughing harder, “God do you remember that night?”
“Exceptionally well, That was the night that we first had alcohol.” Jake said, laughing, “Remember how our mom’s found us in your back yard puking?”
“Oh my god! Haha my mom looked as though she was about to have a heart attack! I was grounded for a month! Jeeze, how old were we then? 12? 13?”
“… I think we were about 13.” Jake said, smiling.
“Yeah… good times.” Alli said, smiling while her eyes filled up with tears a couple of seconds later, she let out a strangled sob and she put her head into her hands.
“No, don’t cry. It’ll be alright. We can still send letters.” Jake said, getting up and sitting next to her, putting his arms around her.
“I’m sorry, I must seem like a total baby” Alli said, sniffing, “It’s just it’ll be so different! What if I make no friends there?”
“Don’t be silly, you’re Alli Granger, captain of the Hall Beach Cheerleaders! Of course you’ll make friends.” Jake said, making her smile, “You know what we need? My extra special Chocolate sundae! With chocolate ice cream, chocolate sauce, nuts and sprinkles.”
“We haven’t had one of those in ages!” Alli said, wiping away her tears and smiling.
“Exactly. And what’s a sleepover without one of them? How about we go downstairs, I make the sundae’s and you get a movie ready.” Jake said, smiling and getting up.
Alli and Jake watched a movie while eating their sundaes, by the time they were done their second movie, it was 2am and Laura was just coming home.
“Coming home late are we?” Jake asked, cocking an eyebrow with a smirk on his face, “Someone’s been drinking.”
“I had two drinks!” Laura said, laughing, “I’m not even drunk, now your mother and your big sexy piece of meat of a father on the other hand…”
“1- gross and 2-What are you talking about?” Alli asked, smiling.
“Well… I might have convinced them to come with me to scars and I might have convinced them to do some tequila shots.” Laura said giggling, “Last time I saw them they were getting out of a taxi in front of your house… I wonder if they even got into the door. They were basically falling up the steps.”
“Nice mom.” Jake said, laughing.
“What are you two doing up at this hour anyway? You should probably go to bed soon. Big day tomorrow.” Laura said, smiling, she gave each of them a kiss on the forehead and started walking upstairs, “Have a good night, and remember no glove, no love.”
“Whatever mom, I hope you have a big hangover tomorrow.” Jake said laughing, “We probably should be getting to bed anyway.”
“Yeah. I’ll go turn off the TV.” Alli said, smiling.
“Mom? Draco? Are you guys up yet?” Alli shouted into her house the next day. It was already 10am and she just walked over.
”I’m in here. Please don’t scream so loudly.” Her mom’s voice said from the kitchen. Alli walked into the kitchen and tried not to laugh at her mother’s appearance. The buttons on her pyjamas were in the wrong places, her hair was a mess and her makeup from the night before was smeared.
“You’re looking good.” Alli said, smirking.
”Be quiet.” Hermione said, making Alli roll her eyes.
“Where’s Draco?” Alli asked, looking around.
“Somewhere.” Hermione said, getting an aspirin and swallowing it.
“Here.” Draco said, walking into the kitchen, he looked almost as bad as Alli’s mom. Alli noticed how Draco and Hermione looked at each other for a second and then looked away blushing slightly, clearly uncomfortable about something.
“Something definitely happened last night” she thought to herself, smirking slightly.
