It was always Harry, Harry this Harry that. No one ever paid any attention to him, Harry Potter’s best friend.
It was always that way. It was always Harry and that’s all that it would ever be.
The turmoil Ron was fighting with in his mind was nothing new. He had never been one to admit it before even to himself. He was jealous of Harry.
He hated it when it was put like that. Friends aren't supposed to be jealous of each other.
Ron felt a hand on his shoulder which startled him out of his argument with himself, “What are you doing out of bed so late at night?”
“I could ask you the same question,” Hermione said as she sat next to him.
“I was just thinking, that’s all,” he said.
“What were you thinking about,” Hermione asked.
“Just things,” he replied.
“Oh you can’t fool me Ronald,” Hermione said in an exasperated tone, “I know that you’re thinking about Harry.”
“But how did you know that,” he asked.
“I didn’t, I guessed,” She said, “but now that I know won’t you tell me?”
“Sometimes you amaze me Hermione,” he said.
“Thank you,” she said, a slight blush visibly noticed in her cheeks, “Now why were you thinking about Harry?”
Ron sighed. This was one of the reasons that he loved Hermione. She was always persistent in everything. It was annoying sometimes but he still loved her for it.
“I was just thinking about how Harry is everything and I am nothing,” he said.
“That is not true,” Hermione said, “you are a lot of things, don’t ever call yourself nothing.”
“Well then why does no one look twice at me, why am I unpopular, why do I lack so much where he has it all?”
“Do you think that Harry wants this, to be famous for being the one that has to kill Voldemort,” Hermione said, “Would you want to live his life with that on you?”
“No I wouldn’t,” he said.
“Well then why are you jealous of him,” she asked.
“Because its him that always gets everything and anything and don’t try to deny it because you know it’s true,” he said, “I watch and no one ever pays me any attention while Harry gets fawned over like some boy that just saved someone’s life. Everyone thinks he’s a hero.”
“Well he kind of is,” Hermione said.
“Don’t you see Hermione,” Ron said, “I want to be that hero. I want to be the one to save someone. I want to know what it feels like to be liked by everyone even if it’s once.”
“It’s always going to be Harry,” Hermione said, “Since Voldemort chose Harry it’s always going to be Harry. You have to get use to it.”
“I don’t think I can,” Ron said, “I have watched for a long time people push me to the side and worship Harry like he’s a god. People are fascinated by him. No one’s fascinated by me.”
“That isn’t true,” Hermione said, “there could be someone out there just waiting for you to notice them. Someone that is fascinated with you and is only waiting for you to make them believe that you are fascinated with them.”
“And who could that person possibly be,” he asked.
“I don’t know,” she said, “that’s why you are supposed to look for them. You are supposed to find out for yourself.”
“I guess you right,” he said, “I’m just too thick headed to actually pay attention and look for someone.”
“I can’t argue with you being thick headed,” Hermione said, “the only person that comes close to you is Ginny. She’s almost as think headed as you are, maybe even more.”
“Yeah mum says it runs in the family,” he said, “you probably couldn’t find a more stubborn family than mine.”
“That’s true,” Hermione said, “I can be stubborn to.”
“Oh yeah and how’s that,” Ron asked with a grin.
“Oh you’ll find out one day,” Hermione said, “just pay attention and get rid of that thick head of yours.”
“I’ll take your advice then,” he said, “I’ll try not to be so thick headed.”
“Good and do us all a favor,” Hermione said with a laugh.
“Hey that isn’t fair,” Ron said.
“Who said I’m a fair person,” Hermione said.
“You’re sneaky,” he said.
“Why thank you,” she said, “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
Ron had the time of his life talking to Hermione by the fire. It was just him and her, how he had always wanted it. He couldn’t remember the last time that he had actually sat down with her and just talked. It must have been a long time. He was beginning to wish that he could freeze time and make them stay right there forever. Away from Harry and away from all the people that would never look twice at him because they were to busy worshiping Harry. He just wanted to stay like this forever with Hermione by him in the chair by the fire.
“Ron,” Hermione said quietly.
“Where do you see yourself in ten years,” she asked.
“Well hopefully the war will be over and I will have a family,” he said, “I will be married to the woman of my dreams and we will have a beautiful cottage overlooking the sea. Hopefully I’ll have children. I haven’t decided how many. And we will be happy.”
“That’s beautiful,” Hermione said, “I fancy the girl that marries you.”
“I have no idea who that will be though,” he said.
“You don’t know?” she asked.
“Well I kind of do,” Ron said, “There’s this girl that I really like. Well I actually love her, but I’m not sure if it would ever work out.”
“Why not,” Hermione asked.
“Because she’s way out of my league,” he said, “She is so pretty and smart and I’m just dumb read headed best friend to Harry Potter. I mean every time that I get close to her I feel like I can’t breathe. I wish that I could spend every moment with her and I feel like no one knows how I feel.”
“I know how you feel,” Hermione said.
“Yes,” she said, “I have the same problem as you. I like this guy. He can be a bit stupid at times but I love him for it all the same. He is the most brave and loyal person that I have ever met.”
“What’s his name,” Ron asked.
“It doesn’t matter,” Hermione said, “We are talking about you. Why don’t you tell the girl how you feel about her?”
“I couldn’t it would never work out,” Ron said, “She would laugh at me and toss me aside like everyone else does.”
“How can you be so sure of that if you haven’t tried yet,” Hermione asked, “just go up to her and tell her how you feel. If she turns you down then me and Harry will be here to help you.”
Ron got up from the chair, “Thanks you helped a lot Hermione.”
He began walking to his dormitory when he heard Hermione say, “So are you going to talk to this girl?”
Ron turned halfway around and smiled, “I just did,” and continued walking to his dormitory.
He was at the steps when he heard Hermione say his name. He turned around to see that Hermione was no longer sitting in the armchair by the fire. She was standing up looking at Ron as if trying to detect something in his eyes.
All of a sudden she began running to him and when she got there she threw herself into his arms. She looked up into his face and couldn’t help it any longer. She put one hand on the back of his head and slowly leaned his head forward until they connected.
Ron had never felt anything so good or right. Kissing Hermione was like finding out that his dream he just told Hermione might actually come true.
Hermione pulled off of him and looked into his eyes, “You've always been my hero?”
Ron smiled and said, "I think I could get used to this."
