Chapter 5: Surprises beyond belief

Mr. Weasley, Harry, Ron and Hermione apperated right outside the closed kitchen door.

“Wait there please, I want to show you something, hold on…” said Mr. Weasley. He stepped inside and reappeared beside them a few minutes later.

“Come in, come in, look at this,” he said happily.

Harry looked at Ron and Hermione. They both smiled as if to say, go on wait and see. So with a puzzled frown, Harry stepped inside.

It was pitch black. Trying to get his eyes to adjust to the light he thought that maybe Fred and George had left some Instant Darkness Powder behind and that someone must have spilled it…

“Hello, is anyone there?” he called out loud, but there was no reply. Fumbling in his pocket, he drew out his wand and whispered, “Lumos”.

A burst of light filtered out of his wand and all the darkness disappeared. He blinked, and when he opened his eyes heard loud cries, “Happy birthday Harry!” And he saw nearly everyone he knew standing in the Weasley’s kitchen, which seemed to have been enlarged by magic.

There were some of his favourite people beaming up at him; Charlie, Bill, Fleur, Remus Lupin, and Nynphadora Tonks, who was dressed tonight in a pale sliver gown, and had brown hair which was long and curly like Hermione’s. Plus there was Mad-Eye Moody looking the same as always, Horace Slughorn, looking dapper than ever in a purple velvet smoking jacket and chatting to Mundungus Flecher, and of course, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley.

Hermione appeared at Harry’s shoulder; she was dressed in a light, fresh looking sapphire evening dress, and her hair seemed to Harry like it was sleeker than usual, tied back elegantly with the use of a bulldog clip.

“Hi Harry, how are you finding your 17th birthday gathering?” she asked with a smile.

“Great thanks! Where’s Ron?” he replied.

“Getting changed upstairs,” answered Hermione.

“I’d better change too,” said Harry quickly.

“Yes you’d better,” said Hermione, looking amusedly at his scruffy jeans and jacket, and without further ado Harry sprinted upstairs two at a time.

He reached Ron’s room to find his best mate adjusting a bowtie around his neck.

“Surprise mate, do you like your party?” said Ron as he saw Harry standing behind him in the mirror.

“Its fab, I’ve come to change,” replied Harry.

“Great! Mum’s already put your suit on the bed,” Ron informed him.

Harry spotted his smart clothes folded neatly on his bed, and quickly changed. By the time Ron was ready, he was just adjusting his bowtie in the mirror.

They set off downstairs together, and entered the magically modified kitchen where Mrs Weasley grabbed Harry and said, “Well Harry, surprise! And my sincerest congratulations on passing your apparition test, Arthur told me,” she added at his slight confused frown, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Mr. Weasley joined his wife. “My, my Harry you do look smart,” he said, handing him a package.

“That’s your Birthday Present, it’s from me and Arthur” explained Mrs. Weasley.

Harry thanked them both and opened it; he removed the paper and opened the box inside to find what looked like a strange golden pocket watch.

“Wow! What a strange watch,” Harry said brightly with a smile, not meaning to sound unkind.

“It’s a wizard watch Harry, it’s not like those muggle miniature wrist clocks,” explained Mr. Weasley.

“Thank you very much, both of you. You really shouldn’t of,” Harry said kindly.

“It was our pleasure, Harry dear,” said Mrs. Weasley warmly.

Harry excused himself and turned off into the crowd with a cheerful wave to them, soon coming across Fred and George.

“Happy birthday Harry, here’s you’re present,” they said in unison, and handed him a box.

With a grin and a word of thanks, he removed the wrapping to find a large glass ball. Inside it were fireworks of all different shapes, sizes and colours.

“A little reminder to you of our plan to foil that old hag Umbridge,” said George.

“Thanks very much! It was a great plan, I do have to admit,” said Harry with a grin.

“Do you know Harry, I think you’re right. It was sheer genius,” laughed Fred.

Harry then said goodbye to the twins and mingled in with the crowd. He literally bumped into Hagrid, the Hogwarts Groundskeeper and Care of Magical Creatures teacher.

“Hi Hagrid,” Harry said in greeting, rubbing his side where he had hit Hagrid’s great moleskin coat.

“Oh there you are, happy birthday!” Hagrid said gruffly, handing him a package.

“Oh Hagrid, you shouldn’t of,” said Harry with immense feeling as he opened his gift. He found a thick book inside the packaging, entitled The Wizard & Witches Spellopaedia by Professor Vindictus Viridian.

“No problem, thought it’d be of use to you,” Hagrid said, beaming.

With his arms now full of birthday gifts, Harry sought out Ron and Hermione, and found them both in the large sitting room, talking in whispers. As he walked in though, they looked up, and stopped.

“What are you two whispering about?” Harry asked curiously as he placed his gifts upon the table nearest them and sat down.

“Nothing, nothing,” said Hermione earnestly.

“Oh come off it Hermione, he’s got to know sometime,” said Ron impatiently.

“As you well know Ron, now is not the time or the place, I’ll tell him when we can’t be eavesdropped on by others,” Hermione replied.

She busied herself by pulling the table towards her and looking through Harry’s birthday presents.

“Oh I see Fred and George have given you something flashy,” said Ron as he picked up the glass ball and examined it with interest.

“Oh this looks interesting doesn’t it?” said Hermione as she thumbed through the Spellopaedia that Hagrid had given him.

“Yeah it does,” grinned Harry. Trust Hermione to be in raptures over a book.

Then all of a sudden Hermione produced a package out of nowhere. “Happy birthday Harry, this is from me and Ron,” she said, passing it to him.

“Yeah, happy 17th mate,” said Ron.

Harry unwrapped the package carefully… and found a small mirror edged in gold.

“A two way mirror?” he asked uncertainly.

“Close, but no pumpkin mate!” said Ron.

“No, no it’s a three way mirror! We have got one each,” said Hermione proudly. “It took ages to find you know, didn’t it Ron?”

“Yep,” agreed Ron.

“This way we can never loose touch with each other. I put a charm on them so they will never brake,” Hermione said fondly.

“Ah, thanks very much you two.” Harry stood up and hugged them both.

“No problem,” they said at once.

At that moment Bill and Fleur walked into the sitting room. Fleur said, “Bon Anniversaire ‘Arry,” and kissed him enthusiastically on both cheeks.

“Happy birthday Harry, this is your present,” said Bill, and he shook Harry’s hand.

Harry unwrapped the package to find a glamorously framed picture of the Weasley’s, Hermione and him, all beaming up at him from the day that Bill and Fleur became husband and wife.

“Thanks you two, it’s a great photo,” Harry said warmly.

“’Arry, it was no problem,” said Fleur.

After a while Hermione stood up and stretched. “Shall I put these away safely for you Harry?” she asked, indicating to Harry’s presents.

“Yeah, please do Hermione, if you wouldn’t mind,” said Harry.

With these words Hermione waved her wand in a long sweeping motion and the belongings vanished.

The birthday party went on late into the evening until around 12 o’clock, when Harry made a speech. “Well thank you all for coming, and I must say a big thank you to Mrs. Weasley for arranging this little get together.” Harry twirled his wand in the air and produced a beautiful bouquet of roses, then he charmed them with a flick of his wand and they floated over to Mrs. Weasley.

“Oh Harry it was nothing dear, nothing at all,” she smiled, taking the bouquet. “And thank you for the flowers they’re lovely!”

“It’s no problem, Mrs. Weasley,” said Harry, grinning as everyone clapped and cheered.

It had been the best birthday of his life.
