Arianna caught up with Severus in the hallway that led down to the dungeons, and she suspected, the Slytherin dormitories. “Severus!” She called out. He and his friends turned around and he halted, looking surprised to see her. His friends sneered and left without him.
She caught up to him and smiled. “Hey, how are you?”
He ignored her question. “Have fun eating dinner with your boyfriend?” He asked coldly.
“What are you talking about?” She asked back, frowning at him. “Remus isn’t my boyfriend, you know that. It’s just that he and I have patched things up. I figure I can use all the friends I can right now.”
“He wants to be your boyfriend though.” Severus went on.
“I thought you wanted to be my boyfriend.” She said quietly, looking away from him. He looked at her in surprise. They had never said that word before. “Whatever Sev, Remus is one of the few people who is trying to accept us. He may not like it, but he’s trying. Which is more than I can say for a lot of people. So instead of getting jealous over something that didn’t mean anything at all, you should be grateful to him.”
Severus snorted. “I don’t owe Lupin anything. He’s friend with Potter and your brother. None of those guys are worth my time.”
Arianna looked up at him, eyes flashing. “Severus, let me just say one thing to you. I have put up with a lot from you. I put up with a lot because of you. I know that there are some things between us that are never going to be fixed completely. If you want to be with me, then there are some things that you are going to have to accept. One, Sirius is my brother and no matter how angry I am with him right now, nothing is going to change the fact that he’s going to be in my life too. You’re going to have to deal with him at some time. And I will not tolerate you bad-mouthing him or his friends because they’re my friends too.” She told him. “I’ve had to deal with so much because of you.”
“What do you want? A medal?” Severus sneered.
She glared at him and then took deep breaths until she got her temper under control. “You are impossible, do you know that? I can after you to see if we could talk about things with us. To see if we could get some of this figured out, and all you want to do is start fights with me.” She turned to go but he grabbed her wrist and pulled her back around to face him.
“What if I like starting fights with you?” He asked back, a smirk growing on his face. She laughed and smiled back at him. He sighed, “Alright, let’s go find somewhere where you can talk my ear off.”
“I do not talk your ear off!” she protested, laughing as she swatted at him.
He laughed as he ducked her hand. “Yes you do. Once you get started on something, you just keep talking. Honestly, you wonder how a person gets any time to think around you.”
She grinned at tried to hit him again. He caught her hand and smirked. “Now that is not very nice.” He told her. She laughed and let him guide her back down passage the way they had come. As they walked out into the hall, they spotted Sirius and the rest of his group coming out of the Great Hall. Remus must have left shortly after she had because he wasn’t with them.
Taking Severus’s hand in hers, she squeezed it as they passed by the group. Lily looked surprised. Peter was darting nervous glances at Sirius. James looked frozen, like he didn’t quite now how to react. Sirius looked furious, and she could see him clenching his fists at his side.
Taking a tighter grip on Severus’s hand, she walked by as if she didn’t know them. She did catch Lily’s eyes for a minute, but realized that Lily was just staring at Severus.
After they rounded the corner and out of sight, Arianna let out a breath she didn’t realize that she had been holding. “trying to break my hand?” Severus said, trying to peel her fingers off him.
“Oh sorry, I didn’t know I was hurting you.” She said, readjusting her fingers so they were wrapped around his in a more comfortable way. He looked a little unsure and then relaxed his hand around hers.
Walking down a series of different tunnels into the dungeons, Severus pushed open a door to a classroom that Arianna had never seen used before. Although she was fairly sure that no classes were taught in this room, it looked like someone must come here fairly often. There were books and potion making supplies set out on one of the tables.
“What is this room?” She asked curiously. “I’ve never been in here before.”
“It’s just an old classroom that isn’t used anymore.” Severus explained to her. “It used to be used for a Potions class but the fumes couldn’t circulate well enough in here. I’m not really sure. All I know is that no one uses it anymore so I’ve kind of adopted it.” He shrugged, looking almost nervous about telling this to her.
“Cool.” She said, sitting on one of the counters. “Do you and your friends hang out down here?” She asked, looking around.
He hesitated for a second before answering her. “I’ve never actually…brought anyone else down here before.” He stammered. Arianna was surprised. This was a way of Severus showing her a side of himself. He was trying to let her in, to get her to trust him.
She smiled. “I’m glad you brought me to your secret place. What do you call it?” She asked.
“what do you mean, what do I call it?”
“All secret places always have names.” She explained to him. “So that means this place of yours has to have a name.”
He rolled his eyes. “Trust you to think that a room should need a name.” he muttered.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” She demanded.
He grinned at her to let her know that he was joking. “Just that you have some very strange ideas about some things.”
Arianna laughed and realized that here in this room, alone with her, Severus let his guard down. He was actually being himself around her.
He took a deep breath and propped himself up beside her on the table. “So I guess we need to talk about some things.” He said, not meeting her eyes.
She shrugged. “If you want to.” She said back. She knew that there was a lot of things that she and Severus needed to talk out, but she didn’t want to push anything with him.
He sighed and shook his head. “Do you want to talk about us or not? I thought that was the whole reason that you tracked me down?”
“What? I can’t just talk to you for the hell of it now?” Arianna asked back.
“This is why I’m afraid that we would never work out.” Severus said, pushing off the table and pacing the floor in front of her. “We fight about every little thing. We never get along for more than a couple hours. We would drive each other crazy.”
“Oh c’mon Sev, half the time we’re fighting about misunderstandings.” She protested. “So far we’ve managed to work through those things.”
“Your brother is never going to like me.” He went on. “And I hate your brother. I mean, I really hate your brother. He is one of the most arrogant, self-absorbed-”
“You hate him, I get the point.” Arianna interrupted.
“We would never work out.” Severus said again, looking up at her from his pacing.
“How do you know that? We’ve never even tried.” She argued.
He stopped pacing and stood in front of her, glaring up at her. “Why me?” He demanded.
“What are you talking about?” She asked back.
“Why me? You could have any boy in this school that you want. You deserve a guy like stupid Lupin, someone who would be good for you. Why would you want to be with me? I’m nothing. I don’t have a ton of annoying friends, you would never want to come home and meet my family, I don’t have money to buy you any gifts, I have practically no experience with girlfriends at all. Why me?” He demanded.
She watched him glower for a minute and then smiled at him. “Because we drive each other crazy.” She answered simply. He scoffed and rolled his eyes. “Because I don’t care about any of those things you just said. I don’t want presents. Trust me when I tell you that you would never want to come home and meet my family either. The only problem that we’re going to really have, besides fighting about everything, is my brother. And Sirius will come around, just give him time.” She hoped he would anyway.
“Yeah we’ll see about that.” Severus muttered. Arianna raised an eyebrow at him and he sighed and came back over to her.
“You’re going to be sorry you chose me.” He told her quietly, watching her face for a reaction. “I’m only going to hurt you, I always end up hurting people that get close to me.”
“Maybe I’ll be different.” She protested. “Sometimes, you have to look at the bright side Sev.”
“What has the bright side ever done for me?” he asked back.
She took his face in her hands. “Just think of is this way, I’ll be your bright side. And I promise that I will only do good things to you.” She told him.
He smirked at her. “Okay, I might be able to handle that.” He told her quietly, leaning his face into her hands.
She smiled at him. “See, we can agree on one thing.” She leaned down and pressed her lips to his, smiling into the kiss.
