Chapter Two

The Sorting

The first years all looked up in awe at the huge castle of Hogwarts as they crossed the lake in boats. The lights from the castle were shown down on the grounds and on the smooth surface of the lake. It was a truly magically sight. When the boats came to a sudden stop at the other side of the lake, Hagrid guided them up a trail to the castle.

The first years were led through the great oak front doors into the Entrance Hall by Hagrid. Just in front of the huge staircase stood a tiny man with graying hair and glasses, Hagrid left the first years to follow the man into the Great Hall.

The tiny man said in a somewhat squeaky voice, "Welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, I am Professor Flitwick the Deputy Headmaster.

"In a few moments you will be sorted into your Houses," squeaked Professor Flitwick. "Now, if you would wait here, I am going to go check that they're ready for you." Professor Flitwick went into the Great Hall and the first years immediately started talking.

A boy with a pale face, pointed chin, gray eyes, and white-blond hair standing next to Albus, Nathan, and Rose introduced himself, "My name is Scorpius Malfoy," he said with a sneer worthy of a Malfoy.

"I'm Albus Potter," replied Albus.

"Potter...," said Scorpius. "Is your dad Harry Potter?"

"Yes," said Albus. "Why?"

"You don't know," spoke Scorpius, "that your dad saved the Wizarding world by destroying the most evil wizard?"

"What?" Albus asked.

He was rather confused. He just thought of his dad as just that, his dad. He didn't know that his dad had saved the Wizarding world. Though, it was kind of odd how everyone was staring on Platform 9 and 3/4.

Scorpius smirked, "You really have no idea, do you?"

Before Albus could ask him what he meant, Professor Flitwick came back out from the Great Hall and squeaked, "They're ready for you. Come along."

The first years followed Professor Flitwick though the double doors of the Great Hall and up the middle aisle to the front. The Great Hall was so huge; it had four House tables and one table turned horizontal to look over the students at the front. There were candles floating in the air, unsupported, and the ceiling looked like the starry sky outside. Rose whispered to the other first years, "It's bewitched to look like the night sky, I read about it in Hogwarts, A History.” When they made it up to the front, a stool sat with an old, patched and frayed hat on top of it, the hat's brim opened and started to sing.

When the Sorting Hat was finished with its song, the students clapped and then fell silent as Professor Flitwick stepped forward with a long roll of parchment clutched in his hand. "When I call your name, you will come forth, sit upon the stool, and put on the Sorting Hat to be sorted into your House. When you are sorted, you will sit down at your House's table."

Professor Flitwick cleared his throat and called, "Alistair, Michalya." An African-British girl walked up to the stool and sat down. Professor Flitwick put the hat upon her head; it went down past her eyes. The girl had long, dark braids and dark brown eyes that looked almost black. It took a few minutes until finally the sorting hat cried out, "RAVENCLAW!" The girl went and sat with the cheering Ravenclaw table as Professor Flitwick went on with the sorting.

"Ames, Kyle." A boy with reddish brown hair and brown eyes walked forward, sat down on the stool, and his whole face was basically covered by the sorting hat when Professor Flitwick placed it on his head, he was so tiny. The sorting hat didn't take long to place the boy into "GRYFFINDOR!" Kyle went over to the cheering Gryffindor table and took a seat next to some older students that were congratulating him.

"Atkins, Jason." A blonde boy with dark navy blue eyes walked forward. He sat down upon the stool and Professor Flitwick placed the sorting hat on his head, which slid down past his eyes as well. It seemed to take a while until the sorting hat shouted; "GRYFFINDOR!" and Jason went to sit down beside Kyle Ames as the sorting hat carried on.

There were a few other people sorted until finally Professor Flitwick called out, "Cooper, Nathan." Nathan walked up to the sorting hat feeling nervous. When he sat down on the stool, he felt Professor Flitwick place the sorting hat on his head. The sorting hat slid down past his eyes so that the whole Great Hall was obscured from his vision temporarily. Out of nowhere, a voice began talking in his head, "A lot of brains in this one, though very brave I can see. Where to put you...where to put you...ah, I know." It then shouted ‘Gryffindor’ to the Great Hall.

Nathan handed the sorting hat back to Professor Flitwick as he stood from the stool and made his way over to the Gryffindor table, where he sat next to the other few first years that have been sorted into Gryffindor so far.

A couple more first years were sorted and then Professor Flitwick called out, "Goyle, Hans." A chubby boy with dark brown hair and dull brown eyes walked forward to sit upon the stool. He was placed into "SLYTHERIN!" after the hat had touched his head for a few seconds. Hans walked over to the Slytherin table and sat down where the first years that had been sorted before him sat and watched the remainder of the sorting. Some of the older students congratulated him on making it into their House.

More first years were sorted and then Professor Flitwick called, "Malfoy, Scorpius." Scorpius walked up to the stool, where he sat down upon it. Professor Flitwick placed the sorting hat upon his head and then a voice said from inside his head, "Ah, this is difficult, you aren't like your father or family for that matter. You want to prove that you can be great, but not in the way that they did. You don't want to make their same mistakes." The hat stopped talking for a few seconds before carrying on, "A lot braver then any of your family is and was, hmmm... Ah, I know." The hat then shouted to the room at large, "GRYFFINDOR!"

The Gryffindors clapped, but were a little in awe at the fact that a Malfoy had just been sorted into their house, as was the rest of the hall. The Slytherins shot dirty looks over to where the Gryffindors sat on the other side of the Great Hall as if they had taken one of their own. Scorpius sat down at the Gryffindor table, a little in shock, but relieved. Now he just had to deal with his father's reaction, but he didn't want to think about it at the moment.

As the first years were sorted into houses, the group of first years waiting to be sorted grew thinner. Finally, when Professor Flitwick called out, "Potter, Albus." the whole hall seemed to watch anxiously as he walked to the stool, sat down, and the sorting hat was placed onto his head.

The sorting hat fell over his eyes and immediately a voice spoke to him from inside his head, "Ah, a Potter, I remember placing your brother last year and her father years ago. I can see you are a great deal like your father, no doubt you probably look like him, too," the sorting hat started, "But where should I put you?" Albus thought, Not Slytherin, not Slytherin. The sorting hat seemed to have sensed his thoughts because it said, "Not Slytherin, yeh, you seem to be a lot more like your father then I thought. Hmmm... Better be..." The sorting hat shouted to the whole of the Great Hall, "GRYFFINDOR!"

Albus handed the hat to Professor Flitwick before climbing off the stool and going over to the cheering Gryffindor table; his brother was motioning him over to where he sat with his friends. Albus sat next to his brother and James said, "Congratulations Al! I knew you'd get sorted into Gryffindor."

Albus looked at him with a confused expression before saying, "Then why did you say I was going to be in Slytherin?"

"I didn't say that. I said you might be in Slytherin," started James. "There's a difference."

"Yeah, right," muttered Albus as a first year was sorted into Hufflepuff.

Finally, Professor Flitwick called out, "Weasley, Rose." Rose walked forward and sat down upon the stool. Once the sorting hat was on her head, it spoke as if it were speaking to her in her mind. "Ah, another Weasley I get to sort. Though, I can see you are very smart, like your mother I'm sure. No worries though, I know where to put you." Then the sorting hat shouted to the whole Great Hall, "GRYFFINDOR!" Rose walked over to the cheering Gryffindor table and sat with her two cousins, James and Albus.

There were a few more first years to be sorted. Finally, the last first year, "Zinus, Ashley," was sorted into Slytherin. Professor McGonagall stood once Professor Flitwick was carrying the stool and hat from the front toward a chamber off to the side of the Great Hall.

"Welcome back to all students and welcome to all new students," started Professor McGonagall. "To those you don’t know me; I am Professor McGonagall, Headmistress of Hogwarts. I have plenty to say, but there will be time for that after we eat." When she sat down, food appeared in the golden dishes on all the House tables and the Staff table. The first years were in awe, wondering where it had all come from.
