The Marauders were in the common room when Lily came down shaking and had tears running down her face.
"Lily what's wrong?" James asked.
"She hates me. We got into a fight and now one of my best friends hates me."
James got up and gave Lily a hug.
"Just calm down, come and sit down and tell me what happened."
Lily told the boys everything that was said between her and Shay.
"You said that to her. Don't you think you were a little too harsh?" Sirius asked.
"Too harsh? Sirius I did this for you and your telling me I was too harsh!" Lily yelled and was about to hurt Sirius.
"Lily I'm really thankful that you did this for me, it shows that you're a good friend. I just get protective over Shay. It’s a habit I'm going to have to break," Sirius said.
"Well I said what I thought and whether she liked it or not it's out there and she knows where I stand. It's just now two of my best friends aren't talking to me."
"You guys I know this is the last thing you want to hear but we have to go to class," Remus said.
"Great now to make a perfect day even better, we get to deal with the bloody Slytherins."
Shay was up in her dormitory and was bored out of her mind. Shay was so bored; she spent hours cleaning the dormitory. People think girls are clean, but they had some of the dirtiest living quarters ever to grace Hogwarts pristine presence. They even rivaled the boys. Shay was exhausted when she was done. She just wanted to sleep but when she tried to sleep she started thinking about her fight with Lily, then she thought about Sirius, and that eventually led to Damien. Shay decided to look at some old picture albums. She got a kick out of seeing her and friends when they were younger and reminiscing with old memories. She remembered each event from each picture as if it was yesterday. There was a picture from the day Shay, Niki, and Lily all became friends. There was a picture of Shay, James, and Sirius from the previous year after Gryffindor won the final quidditch game. There was a picture of the Marauders scrubbing the trophy room for detention. That was Shay’s personal favorite. The pictures made her wish that things would go back to the way they used to be.
"That was a great day," Niki said from behind her.
"Yea it was," Shay said looking at a picture of the seven of them having a snowball fight their 3rd year.
Niki sat next to Shay and she turned the page. There was a picture from 2nd year right before they got on the train to Hogwarts. It was of Niki and her mom.
"That's the last day I saw her," Niki said.
Shay didn't know what to say. Niki was raised by her mom. She never met her dad and her mom never told her who he was. Her mom was a nice person but should have never had a kid. She had a lot of personal demons. Niki's mom ran off sometime during her 2nd year at Hogwarts. Niki arrived at Platform 9 ¾ after the school year was over, expecting her mom to be there. No one was there to pick her up that year and she had to stay with Lily and her family until she found a new permanent residence. Niki was devastated but realized it was probably for the best. Niki started living with her aunt and uncle who treated her like a princess because they never had any kids of their own.
"Did you ever find where she went?" Shay asked.
"No, I never really tried. I miss her but I honestly don't need her in my life. I asked my aunt about my dad once. She told me he wasn’t worth my time. So I never bothered with him either. I have all I need."
Shay smiled and turned the page again. It was a picture of Shay and Damien when they were younger.
"I miss him," Shay said.
"I miss him too," Niki said.
"That year that you guys went out was so crazy. I blew that whole thing out of proportion."
"Shay you didn't do anything wrong. We lied to you and you had every right to be mad."
"But if I would have been fine with it maybe you and Damien would still be together and he would have never moved to New York, and I would have had more time with him."
"Shay he was planning to move to the States either way. And I'm happy that everything happened the way it did. I wouldn't be with Remus right now and Damien would have never met Emmeline. What happened to him was awful, but everyone has a fate and that was his."
"Niki, I want to thank you for trying to comfort me these past couple days. I know I've been being a royal bitch."
"Anytime, that's what friends are for."
"Yea well these days it feels like you're my only friend."
"Remus told me about what happened with you and Lily. I told her not to interfere."
"I didn't mean to get that mad, it just sort of happened. But I broke up with Sirius because that's what I felt is right for the both of us. I'm not saying we'll never get back together but right now I can't have a relationship."
"I understand that and I totally agree with what you did, but I think you should talk to Lily. She is miserable right now. She didn't even raise her hand today in class," Niki said.
"Yea I'd be pretty miserable too if I had to hang out with the boys all day."
Both Shay and Niki started laughing.
Lily walked in the dormitory to get some books when she saw Shay and Niki laughing on Shay's bed.
"Hey Lils," Niki said with a smile.
"Hi, I see you guys are having a good time so I'll just go before I ruin it."
Lily turned to leave when Shay spoke.
"Lily, wait. Why don't you come sit and tell us about your day."
The girls sat and talked for hours as if nothing ever happened.
It was a week later and Shay had started her classes again. She and Sirius hadn't talked since she broke up with him. Shay would try to talk to him but he treated her as if she was invisible.
On her first morning back, Shay was having a hard enough time adjusting to school life again, but Sirius started annoying Shay as usual.
"So how's being back in school?" Remus asked.
"I'm glad I'm back because being by myself for half the day was getting a bit boring. You can only have so many conversations with yourself."
Everyone laughed except Sirius, who was busy flirting with girls from across the hall.
Shay made a disgusted face. She hated when he was obnoxious with girls and he knew that.
"Sirius can you pass the syrup?" Shay asked.
She wasn’t trying to provoke him. The syrup was next to his plate. But he didn't acknowledge her, as usual.
"Sirius, can you please pass the syrup?" Shay asked emphasizing the please.
This time Sirius looked at the syrup but just went back to paying attention to the other girls.
Shay got up and stood right in front of him.
"Why are you doing this?" Shay asked.
Once again, he ignored Shay but this time he started to talk to James.
"I can't believe I ever even went out with you!"
Shay grabbed her stuff and stormed out of the hall.
Shay was holding back her tears. She was walking down the hall when she heard to girls talking.
"I honestly don't even feel bad for her. She changes boyfriends like once a week, so what's new. And her and her brother only pretended to be against You Know Who. They're spies for him. Her brother died at that orphanage the Death Eaters attacked. I heard he killed a whole group of kids," the girl said to her friend.
Shay was brought to tears. She couldn't believe these girls were talking about her and she didn't even know them. She couldn't believe people thought her and her brother were Death Eaters. And she was upset that she was so upset over a boy. But he wasn't just a boy; he was her best friend and maybe the love of her life. Shay was starting to regret what she did and that made her pissed off that Sirius could do that to her. She was confused, angry, and sad but instead of crying, she decided to punch something. Unfortunately, she punched a stonewall. Those have been known to hurt a hand or two.
"Shay, what the hell are you doing?" somebody asked from behind her.
Shay turned around and saw Benjy standing there with a concerned look on his face.
"Just blowing off some steam," Shay said looking down at her bloody hand.
"Jeez, don't you know these walls are hard?" Benjy asked sarcastically.
"Ha ha, very funny. But if I didn't know before I sure as hell know now."
"Come on. I'll take you to the hospital wing."
Madame Pomfrey had fixed Shay's hand up in no time and Shay and Benjy were walking back to class.
"So how are you doing?" Benjy asked.
"I'm doing better, but I'd be doing a lot better if Sirius wasn't such an ass."
"I heard you two broke up. I always thought if you two got together, you'd stay together."
"I told him there was a possibility we could get back together. I really love him and I'm kind of regretting breaking up with him."
"Then why don't you tell him that?"
"Because he's not even giving me the time of day right now. And I told him I didn't want a relationship right now."
"Well I guess you're stuck between a rock and a hard place."
"Yea you think? I really don't want to go to class now. I have Potions and Sirius is my partner."
"Then let's skip."
"A Ravenclaw skipping class. I thought I would never see the day."
"Hey don't underestimate us. We already know about what you guys are learning, we don't need somebody to teach it to us. Remember we are the smart ones."
Shay and Benjy spent the whole day in the Room of Requirement watching movies, playing video games and just hanging out. Shay actually forgot about everything for a while.
"I'm glad I didn't go to class today," Shay said.
"Yea, we should skip more often," Benjy said.
"Merlin, I wonder what time it is," Shay said as a clock appeared on the wall.
"Shit, its 9:00. I have to go before they tell McGonagall I went awol."
"I'll walk you up there."
Sirius was in the common room, staring into the fire, thinking about whom else, but Shay.
'Where is she? How does she get off just going and skipping classes? She has us worried about where she is and all she can think about is herself. But I guess I was a little mean at breakfast today. It's just frustrating. A week ago, she said she didn't want to go out anymore and now she's saying there's a possibility we might get back together. But I don't think she'll want to get back together after today. Merlin, why do I have to be such a prick? Screw it. I'm going to find her.’
Sirius ran up to the dormitory and got the Marauders map.
"I solemnly swear that I am up to no good."
The map began appearing and showed Shay walking.
"What the hell is she doing with Fenwick?"
Sirius ran down the stairs and out of the common room only to find Shay and Benjy hugging and then Shay and Benjy kissed. And not just a friendly kiss, a 'I think I really like you, so I'm going to see how much I do' kiss. One word popped into Sirius's head. Slut.
