Fay’s shriek interrupted Lily’s depressing chain of thought.
“Ahhhhhh, we’re being attacked by BOYS!”
Lily yanked opened her curtains to see James desperately trying to calm Fay down. “No, look, its okay, I am just trying to find Lily and I didn’t know which bed was hers!”
It wasn't really working, and Fay looked like she was starting to hyperventilate.
The curtians on the bed next to Fay's were yanked open, and Lily saw the sleeepy face of Elizabeth peer curiously out.
Lucy also woke up, but she said in a loud voice, "I wouldn't bother with her James, she probably probable hasn't even kissed anyone before. But I'm pretty experienced, would you like to get to know me better instead? I love your ink black hair, can I see some more of it tomorrow, at 7:00? Meet me outside the common room and I know about a roomly secret passage we can go to."
"No way! I mean, I'm busy then, I mean I'm busy now, I mean, Lily, can we talk down in the common room?" James said desperately.
As the other girls in the dorm were starting to wake up, and Lily didn’t want to have an audience when she talked to James, Lily grabbed James’ hand and pulled him down to the Gryffindor Common Room, leaving Lucy to sulk in the darkness while Elizabeth calmed Fay down.
“Lily, why have you been ignoring my notes?” James asked, “And why does you face look all blotchy?”
“James, why have you been ignoring me this past week?” Lily asked back, “And why have you started the Marauders without me, when it was my idea? And why did you say it was your idea in front of Sirius?”
“I suggested being the Marauders at dinner tonight. Sirius assumed it was my idea, and I didn’t want to look bad in front of him. I was going to include you, but you weren’t there. Where were you at dinner?” James asked Lily.
“Crying on my bed because my best friend, who I have known all my life has been ignoring me, because he wants to be friends with Stupid Sirius who he has only know for a week!” Lily hadn’t meant to say that, it had just slipped out.
“I s’pose I’m that friend.” James said softly to himself, his face a picture of dismay.
“Sorry, I shouldn’t have said that, I went too far.” Lily said, “It’s fine if you want to make new friends.”
“But I want to stay close to you Lily, I’ve had a talk with Sirius about you being a Marauder …” James’ words made Lily’ heart swell “…and if you are my girlfriend you get to be a Marauder!”
Lily’s happy feeling disappeared.
“Are you joking?” she asked, confused.
“No, to be a Marauder you have to go out with me Lily. What would make you think I was joking?” James asked, equally confused.
“The Marauder Code, remember? As a Marauder, I promise that I will always put the other Marauders before myself, and be there for them and expect nothing in return. I will not keep secrets or lie to other Marauders. This is what I will do, and I cannot claim to be a Marauder if I do not do every one of these things to the best of my abilities.
‘be there for them and expect nothing in return’” Lily continued, “That’s not what you’re asking me to do James!
‘I will always put the other Marauders before myself’ That’s not what you did when you lied to Sirius and said I was lying! "Lily grew even angrier.
"Even if you changed the code with Sirius, you still promised me you would do these things!”
“Well…” James said, trying desperately to think what Sirius would do. “Technically you’re not a Marauder yet as you haven’t had an initiation…”
“I WAS THE FIRST MARAUDER” Lily yelled, “WHY DON’T YOU GO OUT WITH SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY WANTS TO GO OUT WITH YOU, LIKE LUCY, THE GIRL YOU, SIRIUS AND REMUS SAT WITH ON THE BOAT WHEN YOU REJECTED ME?”
“Well, Sirius said I should go out with you first so I can get used to dating girls and I don’t mess up my potential relationship with her…”
“SO YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ME? YOU’RE ONLY ASKING ME OUT BECAUSE SIRIUS TOLD YOU TOO?”
“Well, I know you will forgive me. We’ve been friends for so long…”
“You’re wrong James.” Lily said, a cold fury emitting from her. “I don’t forgive you. Don’t try to use our past friendship to get me to. You’re the one who promised to be my friend forever, before abandoning me and starting my club behind my back. You’re the one who degraded me by falsely calling me a liar, to look good in front of your mates. You’re the one who said I can only be your friend if I be your girlfriend, at the request of your friend.”
As Lily spoke, a window blew open, and a fierce gust of wind attacked the common room. Lily looked more angry than James had ever seen her.
“Don’t expect me to forgive you. I never, ever will. I hate you James Potter. I hate you!!!” Lily spat at James, before running to the relative safety of her dormitory.
