And so it is
Just like you said it would be
Life goes easy on me
Most of the time
And so it is
The shorter story
No love, no glory
No hero in her sky

He gazed longingly at her. How could he not? She was beautiful. He watched her idly as she put her small feet timidly into the lake. Getting used to the water, she allowed herself to lean back, her hands propping herself up as she looked skyward. James sighed.

He would never understand why he fell in love with her. It’s just one of those things that you can’t explain. He just seemed to fall in love with every last bit of the 17 year old in front of him. Even though all they did was argue.

Lily Evans could often be found complaining about certain qualities she had... qualities that James would gladly point out were not at all bad. Lily would frequently say that her hair was too red; James would say that it was too amazing. She would always complain that she was too skinny; James would say that she was too perfect. She would constantly say that her lips were too thin; James would say that they were too luscious. She would say that her skin was too pale; James would say that her skin was too flawless. Lily would say that her eyes were too green; James would say that they were too vibrant. Lily would never stop saying how plain she was; James would never stop saying how beautiful she was.

James sighed again, staring at Lily. He was glad none of his friends were around to scold him for staring, as they frequently would. He let his eyes pass over every inch of her body, taking in every curve. She was intoxicating to James, and he couldn’t get enough of her.

I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes...

James watched as her chest rose up and down while she breathed in the fresh air deeply. He leaned against the tree that he was currently under and closed his eyes slowly, not wanting to stop watching his love, but forcing himself to do so.

James Potter thought back to the first time he had ever laid eyes on Lily Evans. It was first year, on the Hogwarts Express. He never thought her anything special back then. She was just a normal, 11 year old girl with braids and freckles. That is, until she and her friends dumped water on himself and Sirius on the second day of school. James laughed to himself quietly at the memory.

That was, after all, the reason that the Marauders began pranking. And from then on, Lily Evans forever intrigued him.

Of course, he went through three years of simply being a bother to poor Lily. He didn’t realize, at the time, that all the attention he was giving her was because he liked her so much. He just thought that she was fun to provoke, as she always had an entertaining response to anything James or his friends did. He would therefore constantly prank her. She would yell at him and he would laugh. It was almost a routine, and by the end of James’s third year, it was expected.James opened his eyes for a moment to make sure that Lily was still gazing out at the water and had not yet left. Once he saw that she was still sitting where she had been before, he shut his eyes again, and let his mind wander.

And so it is
Just like you said it should be
We'll both forget the breeze
Most of the time
And so it is
The colder water
The blower's daughter
The pupil in denial

When James entered fourth year, he was fully intending on going right back to his old antics of bothering the hell out of Lily Evans. However, when he saw her on the Hogwarts Express, something stopped him.

He knew exactly why he couldn’t pester her in the same way he used to. James Potter realized, for the first time that year, that Lily was truly a girl. Not just a person, but a female.

He new it wasn’t possible to simply completely fill out over the summer, but for some reason, he noticed for the first time, that the person he had been constantly targeting his pranks on had breasts. This couldn’t have suddenly happened over the summer, he had thought, but he certainly hadn’t noticed any of it before. He realized then and there that this person was, in fact a very attractive girl.

So, very suddenly, all of the messing around that James did during the past three years became something completely of the past. James laughed at the thought. Ok, it wasn’t completely in the past. No, instead, he made the subtle change in pranking that said, "Uhh I want to date you," rather than the immature pranks he used to play.

Lily, however, was not so keen as to realize what James was up to. She never gave into his pranks or anything of that sort, and as James became more popular and liked by all, Lily stayed as far away from him as possible. She was still disgusted and wouldn’t bother with him one bit.

So that’s why, when James came to her at the end of their fourth year and arrogantly asked her out, she promptly refused him. James sighed deeply at the thought. It was one of the most embarrassing moments in his life. He recalled her exact words as "I will not go out with someone who pontificates around the school and pranks me nonstop!"

James’s heart gave a pang at the thought of her words. He was surprised when she had first refused him. After finding out what pontificate meant from Remus, he promptly denied that this was why she said no to him. He remembered claiming that it was simply because she was taken by surprise that someone such as himself would ask her out. Remus had only shook his head.

James suddenly jerked his head up and opened his eyes. He quickly scanned for Lily and saw that she was now lying completely on the ground, soaking up the sun as her classmates wandered around her. James’s heart rate slowed back to normal and he allowed himself to close his eyes for the third time.

I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes...

Fifth year was quite the disaster. James could be caught constantly asking out Lily, to her great displeasure. By this time, more guys than James had noticed that Lily was quite the beautiful girl. Needless to say, James was slightly angered by this.

From the very start of term, James made it known to Lily [as well as everyone else in the school] that he would not stop until she dated him. He wasted no time in asking her out the moment he set eyes on her pleasing figure.

As the year dragged on, James would be caught asking Lily out at every opportunity, even if he had a girlfriend at the time. The Marauders had become the epitome of cool by the middle of the year, and James knew it.

He rubbed his eyes and scolded himself for the umpteenth time for his arrogance. He knew now, that this was no way to get the girl you wanted. Lily was more turned off by him than ever before. Usually, when James and Lily would converse, Lily would speak tersely to him, and James would speak arrogantly to her. And though James’s friends tried to point this out to him, James never listened.

James hit his head off the back of the tree, as he knew the next memory that would soon come flooding back to him. It was at the end of fifth year, and it was that incident more than any others that would forever be engraved in his mind.

It had been just after the OWLs were taken. Sirius and James had gotten bored and decided to go mess with Snivi– er, Snape.

Well that proved to be a bad idea.

He had been young and stupid. So, when Lily came over to stand up for Snape, he did nothing more than taunt her and ask her out repeatedly in replace for Snape’s safety.

Lily’s words still haunted him today. She had refused him in the most cruel and harsh way possible. Her impeccable features were etched with hate, and even though James tried to play off his feelings, he was breaking inside.

He cringed, just remembering it. The next year, thankfully, wasn’t quite as bad as fifth.

When James and Lily entered sixth year, they both had goals. Very different goals, but goals nonetheless. James wanted Lily more than anything, and Lily wanted to make it through without having to hex James.

James had a new "and improved" way to get her that year. Instead of pestering, as Sirius suggested as the best way to go, he listened to Peter, who insisted that he try to woo her through constant adulation.

However, this of course, didn’t work. Lily took the flattery and threw all of it out the window. James was left at the end of that year heartbroken, yet again, and with low hopes in ever catching the wonderful eye of Lily Evans.

Did I say that I loathe you?
Did I say that I want to
Leave it all behind?

James’s eyes fluttered open. He looked over at Lily and slowly, she moved her gaze from the setting sun, to his eyes.

It was their seventh year now.

Lily smiled.

& James had finally taken the best advice from Remus.

She stood up, picked up her shoes, and walked slowly over to James. He grinned to himself.

She dropped her shoes next to him, and sat down on his other side where he promptly wrapped his arms around her and placed a gentle kiss on her temple.

It had all paid off.

I can't take my mind off of you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off of you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off youI can't take my mind...
My mind...my mind...'Til I find somebody new
