"I can't believe we waited till the last day of summer break to get out supplies!" Shay said hurriedly getting ready for Diagon Alley.
"I know. Everyone else got their stuff already. I guess we’re just a couple of lazy fools."
The day was made up of boring, uneventful shopping until someone bumped into them on the street.
"Oh crap," Shay said under her breath.
"Well if it isn't the blood traitor and my dear sweet cousin."
"Don’t start," Shay warned.
She didn’t exactly like being related to Snape. Even though they were nothing alike, just knowing she shared the same blood gave her chills. He wasn’t the worst of her family but he still had his issues beyond the point of redemption.
"I heard you ran away. Got your mother fifty shades of upset," Snape antagonized.
"Yea right. Like she cares."
"Yes, you were always a disappointment. Such a shame. You could have been something."
“I think you forget about who you come from. You’ll never be a real part of that family. My mum just pities you,” Shay sliced hard.
Severus dropped a deadly gaze on her and she noticed his lips twitched uncomfortably.
"You better watch your back, Calhoun. Now that you left they're coming for you."
"Like I'm afraid of a bunch of people who like to dress up in robes and masks."
"Don't say I didn't warn you."
"Good bye Severus," Shay said with finality and pulled Sirius away from the situation.
"How can you be so civil to him?" Sirius asked after a while of walking in silence.
She knew Sirius really wanted to hex Snape but he knew not to around Shay. Ever since an incident between Sirius, James, Lily, and Severus in fifth year, Sirius had come to ignore Snape most of the time, just to keep himself out of trouble.
"Let's go home. I’m tired and we need to get up early tomorrow."
"Let's go!" Shay said grabbing her trunk.
"I'm coming! Damn your bossy."
"What the hell are you doing? We are going to miss the train!"
"Shay we know how to apparate, it will take 5 seconds to get there. Plus I have to finish packing."
"What! I swear to merlin. You're worse than a two-year old."
"Settle down, I was just giving you a hard time."
Sirius came into the living room with his trunk following him.
"I'll see you in a bit," Sirius winked and then was gone before her eyes.
Shay followed suit then reappeared in an alley next to King's Cross.
"Hey Shay! Long time, no see."
"Ha-ha, very funny. But we got to run if we want to get on the train."
"Thankfully we made it,” Shay said and started hauling her trunk behind her.
"Plus we don't have to say good bye to anyone," Sirius shrugged casually.
"Sad but true. Let's go find the others."
Shay and Sirius boarded the train and started looking for their friends.
"Where the hell are they?"
"I have no clue. Maybe they’re as late as we were," Sirius suggested.
“Lily’s probably in the prefect compartment. She was made Head Girl,” Shay said.
“Surprise, surprise,” Sirius said with a light laugh.
As Shay looked back to shoot Sirius a smile, she ran into someone, which sent her flying to the floor. She looked up to she who she ran into and was going to apologize when she saw who it actually was.
"Damn it, now I’ve caught that douche germ that’s been going around," Shay said wiping herself off as she got up.
"Regulus, I haven't seen you in a while. It’s true what they say. I really am blessed," she said with a sardonic smile.
"Why if it isn’t the two blood traitors."
"Jeez, you'd think he'd have new names for us after all these years."
"You know he's never been the brightest. Damn those paint chips," Sirius mocked.
"Go to hell!" Regulus said.
"Aw, Sirius, our little Regulus is growing up. He's defending himself without his goons around" Shay said and wiped a fake tear away.
"It seems like yesterday when he was running around in a dress saying he was a girl."
Regulus nostrils flared with anger.
“Lying is not becoming of you, Sirius,” he growled.
"Regulus, what are you doing?" someone was coming out of the compartment.
"Nothing," he answered too quickly.
Shay heard a familiar voice. It was her sister. They looked very much alike. They had the same facial structure except Courtlyn had dark brown hair, wide hazel eyes and was about two inches taller.
"Don't tell me you guys are together," Sirius said looking disgusted.
"Yes, Sirius. He really makes up for that pitiful performance you gave last year. I guess not all the Blacks are hopeless," Courtlyn said with a devilish smirk.
Shay looked at her best friend incredulously.
“Tell me you didn’t,” Shay pleaded, her eyes growing larger.
Sirius looked lost for words and had a hard time maintaining eye contact with Shay.
“The perils of alcohol,” Sirius explained bashfully.
"I'd love to stand here and listen to you mud blood lovers fight, but we have better things to do," Regulus said as he and Courtlyn walked away.
As they were walking away Regulus put his hand on Courtlyn's butt.
"Oh my eyes! They're burning!" Shay said dramatically.
"Well you know another year at Hogwarts is about to start when you insult a prick and find out one of your best mates slept with your sister. What the hell goes through your mind when you meet a girl?"
"It was a mistake I made last year. I drank to much and I was wandering around the castle. If I remember correctly, she seduced me."
"Yea whatever you say."
Shay and Sirius had to walk to the back of the train to find their friends. Shay opened the door only to be tackled by a familiar head of red hair.
"I was worried that you guys missed the train."
"Actually we ran into Regulus and Courtlyn in the hall. It's always such a pleasure to see them," Shay said sarcastically.
"Did you guys know they were dating?" James asked.
"Not until today. How did you guys find out?" Sirius asked.
"We all ran into those two and Snape. You guys have such a nice family," Peter said.
"You don't have to tell us that. Did I tell you guys we ran into Snape in Diagon Alley?" Shay asked.
"No what happened?" Niki asked.
"Nothing. Just Severus being an ass, insulting him, and Sirius getting pissed off. The only difference was that he told me to watch my back because now that I left home the death eaters will be after me," Shay said taking a seat between Lily and Niki.
"Um…Shay you should really consider that. Both you and Sirius. You guys basically betrayed Voldemort. A lot of death eaters will be happy to get their hands on you," Lily said.
"Don't worry about us Lily, worry about yourself. You're muggle born for Pete's sake." Sirius said.
"Let's just say we all have to worry. Shay, Sirius, James, Peter, and Niki, you are all purebloods. Lily you're muggle born, and I'm well…you know. And it doesn't help that we're all from Gryffindor," Remus said.
"No, we are not going to let that happen. Cause when I become an auror I'm going to get all those dirty bastards and throw them in Azkaban where they belong," Shay said triumphantly.
"You got that right!" James said.
"I can't believe it's going to be our last year at Hogwarts" Lily said changing the subject.
"Yea, 10 months from now we are going to be in the real world and have jobs and out own place," Peter said.
"It's going to be great…scary but great."
Lily and Niki started tearing up.
"Why are you guys crying?" Shay asked.
"Today has a lot of lasts. Last sorting ceremony, last time leading the 1st years to the common room," Lily sobbed.
This made Niki cry harder.
"Jeez you guys are emotional," Shay said almost disgusted.
Shay had about two emotions. Happy and mad. It took an awful lot for her to show any sort of sadness that effected her.
"You're right. This year is going to be great," Niki said pulling herself together.
"Come on Remus we have to go to the prefects meeting. I can't believe they didn't make you Head Boy. They better have picked someone good," Lily said after she stood up.
Remus got up and James followed him.
"Potter, what are you doing?" Lily asked.
"I'm coming with," James said and tried to get out the door.
"You're not a prefect."
"Then why are you coming?" Lily asked.
"Because I'm Head Boy" James said.
"James that's ridiculous and you're wasting my time" Lily said while everyone else in the compartment was laughing because they thought James was joking.
"I'm being honest, here look at this" James said and handed Lily the letter he got in the mail.
As Lily read she got angrier and more confused.
"Who in their right mind would make you Head Boy?" Lily asked and gave him the letter back.
"I told you I changed" James said with a smirk.
"Prongs, this is great. You can get us in to the prefect's bathroom" Sirius said and gave James a high five.
"No! Potter, you are not going to corrupt the Head Boy position. And you four will stay out of that bathroom" Lily directed to Sirius, Peter, Shay, and Niki.
"Aw come on Lil, Niki got to go in there" Shay said.
"What! Remus, no wonder you didn't get Head Boy! I am disappointed in you."
Shay received a glare from both Remus and Niki.
"Sorry, but it's not fair that you got to go in there and we can't" Shay said.
"You guys give me a headache. Come on, we're already late" Lily said a stormed out of the compartment.
"Don't worry about it guys. I'll get you in by the end of the year" James said and Remus gave them a thumbs up.
Things settled down after that. Lily, Remus, and James were in and out the whole time. Lily was still not talking to anyone. While James was in there, he, Sirius and Shay talked about their upcoming quidditch season. James had been named quidditch captain and they had to figure out try-outs and practice. After Sirius and James trailed off into another conversation, Shay started talking with Niki.
"So how are you and Remus?"
"It’s perfect. He's so sweet, but it’s Remus so I shouldn’t expect any less," Niki said with a perfectly happy smile.
"How long is it going to be now?"
"A year on October 1st."
"Wow, that’s so great. I’m glad you two survived the summer. It’s hard to be away for that long."
"So how's your own love life?" Niki asked and gave a playful nudge to Shay’s bicep with her elbow.
"It is nonexistent at this point," Shay confessed with a sour grimace.
"Don’t be silly. You had a fantastic love life until you fell for Hogwarts’ biggest lothario.”
Shay opened her mouth to negate but Niki beat her to it.
“Don’t even. I see the way you stare at him. It’s as if you’re picking out the best slice of meat at the butcher,” Niki joked.
“I don’t like him like that. Or at least I don’t want to,” Shay admitted and looked to her best friend for some support.
“You two would make a great couple. You’re already the best of friends. That’s half the battle.”
“He brought home three different girls during the month we lived together,” Shay said through her teeth, her chagrin easily showing.
“That’s part of his charm, Shay. But when have you ever known Sirius to cheat on one of his actual girlfriends? When he’s committed, that man is really committed,” Niki explained.
"I just don't know. He could have any girl he wants, why would he want me, the one that bitches at him all the time?"
"Merlin, Shay. You’re drop-dead gorgeous. The male population at Hogwarts worships the ground you walk on. Plus, he flirts with you all the damn time, you’re just too bullheaded to see it."
Shay was about to counter when Sirius popped his head in between the two of them.
"Hey ladies, whatcha talking about?" Sirius asked.
Shay wondered if he heard anything.
"Oh…nothing," Shay said a little too fast and a mild blushed rose in her cheeks.
"We're almost there; you might want to get your robes on," Sirius said with what Shay thought was a knowing smile.
Shay and Niki left the room whispering wildly.
"I can't stand it much longer," Sirius whined as he plopped back in his seat.
"This again?" James asked, completely uninterested at the repeated conversation.
"Living with her for that month," Sirius closed his eyes and looked as if he was suppressing an urge, “It was so hard to not go into her room on a nightly basis.”
"She’s not going to sleep with you. You two have known each other practically since birth," James countered.
“But it’s not even about that. She’s perfect, Prongs. She’s just…it,” Sirius explained with a goofy smile.
“Sounds like you got it bad. Good luck with that one,” James said with a laugh.
"Like you’re one to talk. Lily just outright hates you,” Sirius barked, mad at his best friend’s nonchalant-ness of the situation at hand.
James’s eyes fired up. He, or more so his ego, was hurt by the insult
"Padfoot, I think she likes you as much as you like her," Peter piped up.
Sirius shot him a grateful smile.
“It’s good to see I still have real friends,” Sirius said and patted him on the shoulder.
James rolled his eyes dramatically.
“You’re such a girl,” James taunted.
Sirius chuckled, “I’m not the one pouting out the window as if my mum just told me I couldn’t get that pretty tea set I always wanted.”
James smirked and threw a piece of crumpled parchment at Sirius. Disagreement over.
Soon everyone was back in the compartment waiting for the train to come to a halt. It finally did.
"Let's go and have a kick-ass year."
