Mrs Potter glanced out her window to see her son, James, fleeing from Lily, his best friend, who lived just down the road. It will be a shame to split those two up, she thought. If truth be told, Lily was James’ only friend, no one else wanted to hang around with the freaky home schooled kid, who didn’t even watch TV. Mrs Potter felt sorry for Lily…Lily had been a popular little thing, until she felt sorry for James and started to play with him. Now she only had James. Soon James would be of to Hogwarts, and Lily would be friendless, for befriending someone with no friends. It’s a real pity... Mrs Potter thought.
“Give that back!” Lily shrieked as she tore after James. She grabbed him round the ankles and tackled him, then sat on him before he could escape again. “Give me my letter, now!” Lily growled threateningly at the scrawny boy underneath her who was desperately trying to hold an envelope with the Hogwarts crest out of her reach.
“That letter is for me!” James cried desperately.
“Then why does it have my name on it?” Screeched Lily, “Now give it too me!” She reached down and began tickling him under the armpits. James brought his arms down to stop her but Lily ceased tickling him and grabbed the envelope as soon as it was within her reach.
“See,” Lily pointed, “Miss Lily Evans.’
“Yay!” James exclaimed, “You’re coming too!” He tried to envelope her in a hug but couldn’t reach in his current position.
“Right,” Lily said slowly, but before she could open her letter, Mrs Potter called to them from her window.
“James and Lily dear, could you please come inside for a moment? I have something to discuss with you.” Lily put the letter securely inside her pocket in case James tried to steal it again as they went inside.
“I have just had a very pleasant surprise.” Mrs Potter told Lily and James once they were in the privacy of her rather substantial house. “You might like to open your letter now Lily dear.” Mrs Potter said, “Oh and here’s your’s James.”
Lily’s eyes scanned the letter..

“What on earth is this?” Lily exclaimed.
Peering over Lily’s shoulder, Mrs Potter said, “Oh, that’s just what you need to bring dear.” She took the envelope from Lily and withdrew a second piece of paper. “This is your letter Lily dear,” she added. Lily looked at the piece of paper Mrs Potter was holding out for her.

“I repeat, what on earth is this!?!?” Lily exclaimed, but before an answer could be provided, Mr Potter walked in with Lily’s mum, dad and younger sister, Petunia, whom he had just gathered at Mrs Potters bidding.
