Chapter 12- Memories of the past

Part One

Lily’s large green eyes fluttered awake as a sly morning sun crept over her. Her eyes were groggy and full of stardust and her mouth was dry, but that was not what Lily was thinking about. Breathless with confusion, she sat up quickly, brushing the mussed wiry hair out of her face carelessly. A sharp pain smarted somewhere slightly above her forehead. Before touching it she knew what it was, it was from last night, it was from the whomping willow.
Standing up fast, she jostled her things together, not realizing the very article of clothing she held in her hand. Just as Lily turned to leave from the hospital wing a very ornery witch named Madame Pomfrey came bustling into the room, holding a vile of a slimy pea green serum in her left hand.
“Miss Evans!” Lily winced, expecting a lengthy admonishment in return for her insubordination. But to Lily’s surprise the tone changed and she continued in a half laugh. “I assure you that as soon as you take this potion you will be free to leave, however Miss Evans,” she gave a small chuckle, “I’m not sure one would like to parade around in a dressing gown without a back.” Lily turned the color scarlet, the same color, in fact, as the only large strip of cloth on her body save the tartan dressing gown supplied by Madame Pomfrey.
“I…er…well…..I….”
“Drink this Miss Evans!” the cross look vanished from her face, replaced rapidly by a wry smile. “And for god sake child have some pride and sit down!”
Scurrying to sit down on the cot, as a few sleepy students stirred to see what all the fuss was about, Lily looking skeptically at the vile that was now expelling a rather noxious looking gas.
“Madame Pomfrey…..er…..what do I exactly do with the potion?”
“You drink it dear! What else would you do? Throw it over your left shoulder chanting some old banshee hogwash? Go ahead! Don’t be timid!” she added as Lily gave an inconceivable grimace. “Drink it!” Without a second glance, Lily swallowed the slimy, ghastly mass of green tonic.
It was thick, slimy and greasy all at once as if she were swallowing an eel, yet somewhere in the sensation of revulsion there was the vague taste of strawberries and….sardines.
“Now that wasn’t too bad was it?”

*

The weather had brightened considerably since last Lily stood on the grounds. The ground, although still firm with cold, was beginning to look alive and little buds of springs started appearing on the trees.
Yes, the students of Hogwarts had found this weather quite appetizing as well. Many were stretching out by the lake on their long quilted robes. Others walked casually by the forest laughing every now and then at a joke, or another stepping in a thick puddle of mud but otherwise, after a long, cold winter it seemed as though the world was finally about to thaw out.
Her mind, blank of last nights worries, free of dark thoughts, (possibly due to the potion Madame Pomfrey had given her and failed to tell her its effects though temporary may be mind altering) she began to pace around the castle lazily, looking for someone to talk to, but the first two people she bumped into were the same two she had met uncomfortably that past night and weren’t exactly free to talk. Huddled (whether unwillingly or by choice) in a small niche in the castles wall Remus and Feste were completely speechless once again owing mainly to the fact that both of their lips and tongues were busy.
“LOVELY weather out, don’t you think?” Lily said a bit to loudly, to get their attention. Remus shifted, his back still turned to Lily and spoke a bit muffled like;
“Now look at that brick. Prime example of the ancestry of this school, English made but Egyptian charmed mind you. The detail in this brick is just…”
“OY! LOVELY WEATHER!”
“Oh hello Lily didn’t see you there I was just a bit busy showing Feste the bricks.”
“The bricks?”
“The bricks!” Feste piped up from behind him.
“It is truly amazing, the age and antiquity of this cast…”
“Look I don’t care what you were doing….”
“The bricks!” Feste squeaked again.
“Yes, yes…” said Lily mordantly. “The bricks…..well I was just wondering if you had seen Cymbeline and Iris and everyone.”
“Oh yeah, yeah I saw them ages ago, they’ve camped themselves near Hagrid’s hut I think except Sirius…..” For a few minutes the three stood in an uncomfortable triangle, Feste still pinned against the wall.
“Right well….”
“Yeah, see you two later I guess…” Lily said trotting off, “and have a grand time snogging!”

Hagrid’s Cabin was only a short walk off eastward and in a couple of minutes Lily spotted the group, all sitting on a spread out group of cloaks although spaced slightly apart so only Iris and Cymbeline sat together on the first robe, bathing in the warm sunlight. Peter, Sirius, a darker skinned girl Lily did not recognize and….James….her mind paused on the name, leaving her frozen 10 or 20 yards away.
“Lily!” called a voice that could only belong to Cymbeline, melting Lily, and she beckoned her to come.
As Lily moved closer to the group, she recognized the girl now giggling with Sirius as he whispered something in her ear. Her first name was Danielle, she belonged to Ravenclaw and was exceptionally bright, the rest eluded her. Now, however she was giddy and flighty, legs over Sirius lap. She had dark black hair and honey colored skin. A pair of small-framed glasses were a bit askew on the tip of her nose and Sirius flung them off.
“Sirius, you silly git, I can’t see!”
“Now, now.” He said sweetly looking down at her voluminous chest. “Nothing wrong with that.”
“Oh god, not another.” Lily thought as she looked at the two

Lily plopped down next to Sirius, stealing a short glance at James, which turned out to be a mistake. Instead of seeing the happy, laughing, carefree James she saw James staring straight back at her, his brow furrowed and his eyes sad, deep and searching. But the look was soon lost as Cymbeline pulled her down so she almost slipped, falling into Iris.
“Lily! Lily? Where on earth have you been?”
“Erm…around, homework and things.”
“Well….” Another high pitched giggle interrupted there conversation and Cymbeline scowled as they looked over to see Sirius and Danielle kissing….almost viciously.
“Hello James.” Said Lily, as she caught his glance, sounding perhaps a bit to dignified.
“Hullo Lily.” He said in a somber tone and buried himself in a bit of reading. And soon Cymbeline began whispering sadistically in Lily’s ear.
“Can you believe the nerve of him? The nerve of him….I hate that, that, that, Danielle girl. She’s…she…”
“Doesn’t seem that bad to me…”
“Ugh. I despise her… thoroughly.”
“Don’t you remember anything Lily?”
“What do you mean?”
“Christmas!”
“Christmas?” Lily asked, completely befuddled, and now half listening as she tried to catch James’ eye.
“Lily!”
“What?!”
“Christmas!”
“You’ve bloody said that already!” Cymbeline jerked her head towards Sirius.
“Remember now???” and Lily did…..

Three months, two weeks and five days before………

Christmas had finally come to Hogwarts and as Lily paced around the bustling common room, excitement could not be more prevalent. Snatches of conversations regarding presents and gifts filled her ears. Butterbeer had appeared out of nowhere along with mountains of pastries from the kitchens and candy from Honeydukes. Yes, it did seem as though that last day before all the students would return home couldn’t be more perfect, all of them felt this way, except for two.

“I just don’t understand it! I don’t understand it! This is sheer madness!”
“Calm down Cymbeline, calm down, it won’t be that bad.” Lily hushed soothingly.
“Calm Down?! Won’t be that Bad??!!! Oh yes, yes dear, we’re renovating the entire bloody house, so why don’t you be a Good girl and stay at school over vacation?!” She yelled, mocking her parents letter that was now crackling merrily in the fire.
“Well look on the bright side, Cymbeline….I’ll be here….”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” She scowled. “Really bright. You could light up the whole damn common room….”she continued murmuring vague obsenities, none of which Lily caught, as she pitched her self into one of the common room arm chairs. Lily was still pacing around when a commotion erupted like no other.
WHIZZ!! ZOOM!! BANG!!!! POP!!!! SPLAT!!!! “OUCH!” “WHAT IT!”
Standing near the fireplace, for all to see, were Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black and James Potter, who seemed to be celebrating the holidays, by letting off the best fireworks show, many of the Gryffindor students had ever seen.
“INCOMING!” shouted James as he tossed another one to Sirius who magically lit it, letting it explode only a few inches away from Lily’s head.
“POTTER!” she screamed, but it was no good, her voice was easily lost in the series of more pops and bangs as the three boys let off yet another. Remus was sitting in the back of the room, refusing to help them but also to refusing to stop them.
“Onward, my noble comrades! To Slytherin House!” Sirius cried pointing at the floor dramatically.
“To put some life in Snivellus!”
“Or a firecracker in his pa….”
“NO, YOU WON’T” screamed a smaller voice, as laughter broke out in the room. James was now atop an end table.
“JAMES POTTER! I’LL HAVE YOU EXPELLED!”
“Oh!” James answered looking down. “Will you, Evans?”
Lily’s face was hot and flushed from the excitement, her freckles standing out in the heat.
“I….I….I’m a PREFECT! And have every right to tell you what to do and not do!”
“Do you, Evans?”
“POTTER I’LL….”
“CACHINARRE!” Lily fell instantly into a fit of uncontrollable laughter, landing as she giggled right next to Cymbeline, who looked to be pretending that she was sitting in a mute library gazing out of the window rather than a brawling, fire cracking Gryffindor common.
“Lily, its really not that funny you know, you’re acting quite immature.” Between giggles Lily replied;
“Cymbeline (giggle) I (giggle) can’t help it. I (giggle) ‘ve been (giggle) hexed you (giggle) daft (giggle) cow (giggle, giggle, shriek of laughter).”
“Oh! Oh…I…”
“Un-Hex me! (giggle)”
“Quietus!” and with that Lily stopped in mid-giggle.
“Right.” She said straightening up. The room’s focus seemed to have moved from her back to James. “I was only kidding, you’re certainly not daft, maybe a cow but not a daft one.” Lily said, quite seriously to her tall, skinny friend. For the first time that night Cymbeline smiled.
“So shall we solve this problem together then, Miss Evans?” asked Cymbeline.
“Magnificent idea, dear Miss Hartley, if I do say so myself. Shall we on three?” Cymbeline smiled in accordance.
“One”
“Two”
“THREE!” Jets of purple, red and blue light were sent flying around the room, curses, hexes and jinxes yelled left and right. Screams were heard. Someone fell painfully off an end table, other were dancing wildly, out of control. Firecrackers halted in mid air and when the smoke cleared it was easy to see what sort of damage had been done.
Peter Pettigrew was clutching his face in pain, as a few rather large and angry boils appeared. Furniture had been knocked back, the firecrackers, at the least, lay neatly in the waste basket and James and Sirius lay side by side both apparently knocked unconscious by a number of different curses.
“Oh bugger!” said Cymbeline loudly, pointing with a wry smile on her face at the both of them. “They’ve been knocked out. SHAME.” But the crowd certainly thought so.
“Oh shut up Cymbeline.” And she yelled to the thinning audience, “Right so who’s going to help us get these two idiots down to Hospital wing? Anyone?”
The audience had vanished, leaving Cymbeline and Lily to pursue the task themselves.
“Right.” Said Lily standing next to Cymbeline in the deserted common room. “Should we….er…..”
“Who votes to just leave them here?” Cymbeline replied cheerily. Both girls’ hands shot into the air. “I guess its unanimous then?”

*

Lily stretched luxuriously on the burgundy armchair, parchment scattered across her lap. The tall clock to her left had just rang midnight and a light wind was now tapping at the window. Cymbeline sat across from Lily, feet up on the end table groaning as she continued a rather long essay for Professor Bins’ class,
“Tell me Lily, why hasn’t, after 72 years of teaching, Professor Bins died yet?” Lily’s answer was stern but a large grin spread across her face.
“Cymbeline! Don’t wish….” And with that she broke into giggles.
“Have you finished you’re star chart yet.” Cymbeline asked after the laughter subsided, she stood up to peek over at what Lily had accomplished. Hastily, Lily ruffled her books slipping a small bit of parchment into her pocket and moved to show her the chart.
“Did you finish the predictions for Professor Misleidend?”
“Yeah, I finished them before I started the essay.”
“Could I possibly…..”
“Yes.” Cymbeline said chronically.
“I really do owe you, I swear I’ll….”
“Ask three more times round?’ Cymbeline asked smirking slightly and the two erupted into giggles for a second time. For a few minutes all that could be heard was the scratching of Lily’s quill but a low guttural moan issued from below. Cymbeline let out a small sound of fright and Lily perked up, quickly looking around.
“Uhhhh.” The something or someone groaned once more. “Blimey my head hurts.” Sirius Black sat up on the floor leaving James completely out next to him, drooling slightly. Both girls let out a sigh of relief.
“Oh! Sirius! I suppose we completely forgot about you.”
“Pity, isn’t it Cymbeline. Wish we had a camera.” They both chuckled. Sirius stood up, rubbing the back of his neck so that his perfect black hair moved to and fro, and he groaned once more.
“Wha…W’happened.” He said slurring words and syllables together.
“You don’t remember the two spells that hit you three hours ago?” Cymbeline replied and Sirius plopped himself on the couch next to her.
“Oh shudddup Cym….” But he stopped as he looked over to her, in an almost awe. Cymbeline was pretty, yes, but usually hunched over a book or buried in papers. Now she was smiling, her icy blue eyes sparkling with mirth and her short, blonde hair falling limply lining her face. Her cheeks were rosy rather than the usual raw red and her lips were thin, but even and a perfect shade of cherry.
“Yes?” Cymbeline asked, raising an eyebrow after a minute passed in silence.
“Cat got your tongue?” Lily said, momentarily interrupting their gaze. “Or perhaps you want someo….thing to catch it instead.” She gave a wry smile and stood up so she hovered over James.
“Goodnight James. Sleep tight.” Unlike Sirius James Potter was not quite as sound a sleeper, both eyes opened wide and he shot up, butting heads with Lily painfully.
“JAMES!”
“URGHH”
Lily was no on the floor groaning with pain.
“Ohh sorry Evans did I hurt you?” Lily simply glared at him. “Here move a bit closer and let me rub it for you.”
“POTTER I….”
“Want to go out with me? Possess a secret desire for my larg….”
“I’M GOING TO BED! MAYBE IF YOU WOULD TRY DEFLATING THAT HUGE EGO OF YOURS!”
“Night Evans, I would tell you to dream about me, but I’m sure you already do!” With one last look of pure venom, Lily stood up (nearly tipping over) and stormed out of the common room, up to the girls’ dormitory, Cymbeline trailing close behind.
Sirius, stood up as to follow the two, but with a glance back at James settled with the words, muttered under his breath; “Goodnight Cymbeline.”

Ok so what did you think? Please tell me I really appreciate it. Any of you who speak Dutch, which of course are oh so many, are probably laughing at the professors name. So please review if you read it, I really REALLY like to get reviews and my mind is spilling out with ideas so I should be writing faster, I’m in that mood. By the way THE MEMORY IS NOT OVER (those who don’t read author’s notes [like me] I needed to get your attention) and I think you’ll like the next bit, it will get good and raunchy (for you Danielle!) Thank you!
