Chapter 10 – Relapse, Resist and Regret
With a grumble and a groan Faith awoke to find she was spooning with Sirius. She very quietly got up and found her jacket and tiptoed up the stairs. She stifled a laugh as she saw Frank and Alice asleep on the floor in the entrance hall. As she walked home she pulled a small potion out of her jacket pocket and drank it. She managed to make it to her front door, where she slipped off her boots and crept into the kitchen only to find Liam asleep on the counter.
“Good morning sunshine!” she cried loudly flinging her arms around his neck.
“Urgh must you be so, chipper?” he groaned pushing her off.
“Aw, somebody’s a little hung-over!” she said in a singsong voice.
“Urgh. Why aren’t you?”
“A little potion that Georgia and I invented, instant hangover cure.”
“Can I have some please?” he moaned attempting the old puppy-dog eyes.
“Nu-uh. You must suffer for your actions.”
She patted him on the head before running out and up the stairs.
Towards the end of the holidays Liam received a letter from the ministry – where he worked – that said he had to go to Boston for a while for work.
It was a Saturday and Faith was waiting in the front hall for Liam to come down and say goodbye.
“Ah,” he sighed walking down the steps. “Well this is where I leave you.”
“Do you have to go? I mean you are totally annoying and everything but it’s no fun pranking when there’s no one to get!”
He laughed and pulled her into a hug.
“I’ll be back and you and your friends – except that Black dude – can prank me as much as you like. Ok?” he said.
“See ya firecracker,” he whispered before kissing her on the head.
He gave her one last squeeze before letting go, grabbing his trunk and apparating.
“Stab my back it’s better when I bleed for you,” Faith sang as she threw her things into her trunk.
The holidays were over and tomorrow she was going back to Hogwarts.
She stopped and turned the music off when she heard the door slam downstairs. There were muffled footsteps coming up the stairs and then her door slammed open.
“Mom, jeez what are you doing,” Faith said as her mother climbed into the room.
Beth Porter was swaying where she stood a half empty bottle of whisky dangling in her fingers.
“I lost my job today because of you, you piece of shit!” she snarled.
“What? How is that my fault?” Faith said backing up slightly.
“You and your good for nothing brother treating this place like a hotel, distracting me from my work.”
“That’s bullshit and you know it,” Faith cried fumbling behind her for her wand.
Faith felt her skin rip as her mother smashed the bottle across her shoulder.
“Crucio!” she cried aiming her wand at Faith who fell to the floor but refused to let out a scream.
Faith heaved her trunk along the platform as the whistle to the Hogwarts express blew.
“Faith, hey Faith!” came the cries of Alice who ran over and flung her arms around her neck.
Faith flinched as the deep cuts in her shoulders were touched. She had managed to heal the cuts and bruising around her face and neck but the deep cuts and bruises on her arms and body were too severe.
“Hey you ok?” Alice asked looking at her concerned.
“Five-by-five,” Faith lied, picking up her trunk.
The two clambered aboard the train and set off in search of Lily. They found her in a compartment at the end of the train sitting on one James Potter and snogging him senseless.
“Oh. My. God!” Alice breathed staring at the two.
They broke apart and looked up at her and Alice. Lily opened her mouth to speak when Remus and Sirius burst in shoving each other and laughing.
They stopped abruptly when they saw James and Lily.
“No…” Sirius said disbelievingly.
James reached up and ruffled his hair nervously. Lily stared at the floor her face slowly turning as red as her hair.
“Well it’s about time!” Faith cried sitting down.
There was a stunned and awkward silence that was broken when Sirius held his hands out to Remus and Faith.
“Cough up you two.”
Faith groaned but handed him two galleons all the same, as did Remus.
“Hold up, what’s this?” James asked looking between his three friends.
“Little bet we had prongs,” Sirius explained taking the money from Remus and Faith. “We each bet two galleons on how long it would take for you to get together. I said before Easter, Moony said after Easter and Faith said before the end of the holidays.”
“But that means she won,” Lily said speaking for the first time. “’Cause we hooked up at new years.”
“Ha ha, fork it over,” Faith cried with glee.
Sirius handed over the money adding two galleons of his own.
“So my trumped up little sex bunnies, how did this happen?”
“Well it all started with ‘I Never’.” Lily began. “We were both completely hammered and fell asleep on each other, I woke up at like sunrise and went out onto that balcony thing for some air and he followed me then we talked, then we snogged … a lot.”
“Aw, how romantic!” Faith said sarcastically.
“It could have been worse,” Lily said.
“True he could of barfed on you,” Faith said. “Ah, I gotta go pee, can someone get me some chocolate frogs and Bertie Botts if the lunch lady comes.”
She was walking back from the bathrooms when some one pulled her into a compartment.
It was Sirius.
“Oh it’s you. What do you want?”
“Well talk then.”
“I just wanted to see if you were ok, you seem kind of distant in there.”
“What does that even mean?”
Sirius raised his eyebrows, clearly not believing her.
“I don’t think that you are.”
“Well your wrong, ‘cause I am.”
“I, Sirius Black, am never wrong!”
“Urgh. God you are so freakin’ arrogant!”
“That’s what the ladies tell me.”
Faith couldn’t help but laugh. She stopped abruptly when he grabbed her shoulders and pulled her into a kiss.
The next thing she new her black shirt laid disregarded on the floor and she and Sirius were lip-locked.
“What the hell is that?” he asked pulling away.
She looked down to where he was staring. Her shoulder had several deep cuts and small fragments of glass. Sirius reached out and grabbed her wrist examining the many bruises on her arms.
“It’s nothing,” Faith replied pulling her arm out of his grasp.
“Well it doesn’t bloody look like nothing!” he cried. “Who did this?”
Faith watched him look at her bruised arm, the deep cuts in her shoulder, the grazes and bruises all over her chest and back and although he couldn’t see it Faith new that a couple of her ribs were cracked.
She got to her feet and backed up against the window. The cool glass was soothing against her skin.
“Was it Liam?”
“No. God no.”
She grabbed her shirt as she made a move towards the door but Sirius stepped in front of her.
“Then who?” he urged.
She shoved him so that he fell onto the seat. She pulled the shirt over her head and ran out into the corridor before disapparating.
