“I love you.” I said suddenly. He looked at me, his expression unreadable. He shook his head.
“No.” He said simply.
“What?" I ask.
“You can’t,” He said, “It’s to complicated. I care about you, Alea, and I wouldn’t want to put you through what would happen.”
I felt tears start to form in my eyes. I had put my heart on the line and that’s what I got. I wasn’t sure how the meeting at the coffee shop had gotten to this, but it had.
“Screw you, Sirius Black!” I screamed, not paying attention to the staring faces in the shop.
“Alea, you‘re making a scene,” He said self-consciously looking around.
“You think you can kiss me and then tell me it’s to complicated to tell me you love me back?” I shouted. He took me by the arm and led me out of the shop, as I struggled against his hold.
He walked down the street, making a sharp turn at a small alley way between the shops. He looked around and then turned to me,
“Hold on the my arm, and don’t let go!” He said. I did I was told, and something happened. I can’t explain it. I felt like something heavy was sitting on my chest. I was also spinning around uncontrollably. I opened my eyes when the sensation stopped.
I was in a dining room. There were many people sitting at the table. Including Remus and James.
“Did you tell her?” asked James.
“No, she wouldn’t-” started Sirius but was abruptly cut off by myself.
“Didn’t tell me what?” I asked, looking curiously at all the people in the room. They all had on some sort of cape. I shook my head, not understanding. Sirius took out some sort of stick from his pocket.
“Ok, Alea.” He said in a bored tone.
“I’m a wizard.”
“Are you okay, as in the head?” I asked slowly, sincerely believing he was mental.
“Yes!” He said, saying some nonsense word and moving the stick. The floor next to me set on fire. I jumped back and let out a yelp. He said something else and the fire extinguished.
“Get me out of here!” I said, panic stricken.
“Calm down, Alea.” said Remus. I turned to Remus.
“Remus? Are you in on this, too?” He nodded. I looked at the faces in the room. Who were they? Where were they? Where was I?
“We’re wizards.” said James, standing up. The shock was over whelming. I started laughing. It was embarrassing, really. I was even clutching my stomach. I looked up and saw nobody was laughing. So this wasn’t a joke.
“W-wizards?” I finally choked out. Sirius nodded and stepped closer to me.
“We went to a wizarding school. We have magic powers and everything.” I scoffed.
“And next your going to tell me that you ride on broomsticks.” They looked at me with the utmost seriousness. My eyes widened.
“This is….” I trailed off.
“Okay,” I started, “Lets just say I believe all of this. Who are you people? Not to be rude.” The man with the beard smiled.
“I’m Albus Dumbledore, and I am the head of the Order Of The Phoenix.” I nodded, not caring that none of it made sense. They were wizards. Wizards!
“Um, Can I go home?” I asked urgently, hoping if I blinked I would find myself at home, in bed. The man with the beard nodded.
“You can, but I must ask you a favor.” I found myself gaping. A wizard was asking me for a favor. “There is a dark wizard-”
“Dark wizard?” I asked, partially amused.
“What? Is he trying to harm you with his magic wand?” I knew I was pushing it.
“Well yes,” said Sirius. Oh my…. I blinked a few times. I guess I was compulsively blinking at this point.
“Alea, are you okay?” asked James.
“I’m dreaming.” I stated firmly, yet unsurely.
“Okay.” Said Sirius, smiling and looking to James and Remus.
“Alright, if this is some kind of a joke….” I sighed and looked around. I gave in.
“So tell me about this dark wizard.” I sighed, looking at the man. The man smiled, his eyes holding an eerie, yet comforting twinkle, and he continued.
“He is slowly gaining more power. It is his goal to kill non-purebloods and muggles.”
“Muggle?” I asked, thinking of the day at the coffee shop. Muggle…. How I would learn to hate that word. Muggle.
“Yes, a being with no magical blood or powers.”
“Muggle money.” I repeated the words of James, many years ago. He looked at me and smiled. That was a bit of proof.
“So this dark wizard would want to kill me?” I asked, seriously hoping it was a joke. Dumbledore, as I would later learn to call him, nodded.
“Get me home.” I said, firmly.
“Listen to him, Alea!” Said James. I crossed my arms over my chest.
“We need a muggle to help the Order. We do not understand many muggle things. Even muggleborns witches or wizards have used magic for so long it becomes difficult. We need your help in this war, Alea. Once I had mentioned we needed somebody your friends James and Sirius mentioned you.” I sighed and looked at my feet.
“I’ll be helping?” I asked.
“Yes.” Said Dumbledore, as Remus, James and Sirius nodded eagerly.
“Okay…” I said slowly, immediately beginning to regret my choice.
“Yes! Thank you Alea!” Said Sirius as he pulled into a humungous hug and spun me around. I laughed nervously. And he put me down.
“So, um… How did I get here again?” I asked, twirling a bit of my hair with my index finger.
“Oh, aparation of course!” Said James, and then looked a bit remorseful by my confused expression.
“I have a lot to learn.” I said, as he nodded laughed.
So yes, that was the beginning of the end. I was ecstatic to be accepted into my best friends’ world. But I was slowly breaking as I saw them in their own element.
The scissors were slowly closing down on me.
I noticed their looks filled with anxiety.
I noticed how many ‘women friends’ Sirius had.
I noticed how pale Remus looked every month.
I noticed how deeply in love James was with Lily.
I noticed how oddly Peter acted.
I noticed many things. But I kept to myself as I watched my world change, and I watched how it all would come crashing down. Always in the passenger seat.
I would never control a thing.
I would never be in control in my short lived time on the earth. The Marauders would be my end, and I think I knew that early on.
But I stayed for the rush, for the excitement.
I stayed for myself.
I stayed for Sirius.
