Friday passed uncomfortably slow. The hostility, although still present, had weakened vaguely between Lily and James and was now replaced with gaucherie. Too many times did James catch Lily’s eye during class, too many times did he rub up against her in the halls. But Lily’s greatest fear was of what he would say to his friends.
“Oy! Prongs! Where were you all day?” Called Sirius across the common room. A group of boys sat, chairs huddled around a fireplace driven there by cold. All four of the Marauders (minus James) were the last to be awake in the softly lit common room that night and now Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew and Sirius Black were watching James, as he stepped through the portrait. He hurried over to the group, so ancy with anticipation.
“Yeah the minute Evans dashed off you were gone.” Chimed Remus. “Any luck catching her?”
“Err….No…” he said slowly gaining confidence. “Nope Moony. Damn Evans is quite a well-practiced runner.
“Well you certainly got the best of her.” Said Wormtail, happily.
“Yeah.” Said James distantly.
“Are you sure everything’s alright James.” Said Sirius hushed like, taking a step closer so the other boys had troubling hearing.
“Uh yep. Nothings wrong, everything fine, I’m….er….just a little tired is all. I think I’m going to turn in early tonight.” He said loudly so all the boys could hear and hopefully end their inquiries.
“Christ. 12:30 Prongs your pathetic.” Joked Sirius
“Good night Sirius.”
James lay awake in his four-poster bed staring at the ceiling. He had just kissed Lily Evans and yet he said nothing to his own friends? This should be his moment of victory, or triumph, yet all he could think about was Evans eyes wet with tears
I h..hate you j..james potter. Why do you t.turn everyone against me? I work so hard to become what I w.want to be, I try not to be a mu.mu.mudblo…… The words resounded in his head. He could feel the warmth of her head on his chest…and he didn’t want to hurt her. He was starting to believe………
Lily too was up in her bed. Her hand clutching a small bit of parchment, with a tiny inscription on it: I
Love
L.E.
“Quit it Lily.” Her mind interrupted. “You can’t just sacrifice it all for one silly boy, you mustn’t give in. He’ll ruin everything you’ve worked for.”
“But he’s different, He loves me.” She said out loud. Emily White gave a loud snort next to her but then rolled over, back to sleep.
“He’s the same” her mind countered, “He’s just like everybody else.”
