Chapter 17 – Roses are red

Hermione awoke the next morning to a lovely surprise. Her bed and floor was covered with hundreds and hundreds of red rose petals! She looked at the sight with awe. No one had ever done something like this for her before! Then she noticed on her study desk was a vase with a dozen long stem red roses in it. So she got out from under the covers and rose petals to walk over to her desk. There was a piece of parchment with curvy writing in green ink on the desk, which read:

‘A dozen reasons why you should be head over heels in love with me.’

Hermione couldn’t help but laugh. Draco was so cocky sometimes. She looked at the roses and sure enough, each one had a small piece of parchment attached to it. She started to read them one by one:

1. Because I am ‘devilishly’ handsome.
2. Because no one will treat you better than me.
3. Because I will love you forever.
4. Because I’m the Head Boy and captain of the Slytherin Quiddich team, need I say more?
5. Because I can show you a totally different way of life.
6. Because I can protect you.
7. Because I can’t live without you.
8. Because I’m a great kisser.
9. Because I can be understanding towards you.
10. Because I will shower you in love and affection.
11. Because I’m smarter than you (go on, admit it!)
12. Because we were destined to be together…forever.

Hermione felt a single tear run down her cheek. She had never felt so cared about in her life. This was the beginning of a beautiful relationship, even if it was a secret.

Hermione knocked on the bathroom door to see if Draco was there but got no reply. So she entered to find a bathtub already ready for her. And guess what? That’s right…it was also full of rose petals. A small note was on the side of the bath:

“Only the best for my Hermione”

She slipped off her clothes and had a long, comfortable bath. The scent of roses was intoxicating her and she felt so relaxed. Eventually, she got out of the bath and changed into a periwinkle blue summer dress, which finished, just above her knees. She put on some make up and put her hair into a ponytail.

Before going down to breakfast, Hermione knocked on Draco’s bedroom door.

“Draco? Are you in there?”

She didn’t get a reply. So she figured he must already be down in the Great Hall. It was late on a Sunday morning after all.

So Hermione skipped merrily down to the Great Hall with a huge smile on her face. She walked into the Hall and spotted Draco at the Slytherin table with Blaise. He looked up when she entered. ‘She looks beautiful today.’ He thought. He gave her a wink and she mouthed the words ‘I love you’ back to him. He smiled and then diverted his gaze in case anyone saw. Hermione walked over to the Gryffindor table where her friends were already eating their breakfast.

“Morning Herm… Hermione? You look …ummm…nice today. And happy! What happened to you this morning?” Ron asked.

“Yeah, your not usually this perky in the morning ‘Mione.” Harry added.

“I’m fine! I just felt like looking a bit nicer today. That’s all.” Hermione said as she sat down and grabbed some toast.

“Yeah,” Ginny added. “You look good today girl. So do you have any plans today missy? It is the last day of the weekend”

“Oh yeah. Ummm… I don’t know… I haven’t planned anything yet.”

“Good. Girl time this morning then.” Ginny said with a cheeky smile.

“Oh! What about us? Do we get excluded again today?” Ron chipped in.

“Don’t worry Ron. We’ve got the whole year.” Ginny said.

Hermione smiled. She knew Ginny wanted the goss about last night and this morning. It was nice to be able to confide in someone. Hermione snuck a look at Draco who was deep in conversation with Blaise. He looked so happy. He had a huge smile on his face. ‘I guess he feels the same way I do’. Hermione thought.

~*~*~Meanwhile at the Slytherin table…~*~*~

“This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me!” Draco said.

“Yeah, sounds like last night was very … romantic…is that the word? I don’t know as I’ve never been head over heels in love.” Blaise said.

“Did you see her face when she walked in this morning? She looked so happy! I bet she loved that surprise this morning. And she has one more about to happen.”

“What? What is it this time Draco? God, don’t go overboard. It’s only the second day.”

“But it feels like I’ve known her forever.” Draco sighed.

“So what is this surprise she has in store?”

“Here it comes now. Right on time.”

~*~*~At the Gryffindor table…~*~*~

The owls had just started arriving to bring the morning post. Ron and Ginny both got parcels from Mrs. Weasley. Hermione got her Daily Prophet and started to read. She had only read the first line when a brown tawny school owl swooped over her head and dropped a long stemmed red rose in her lap.

“What the bloody hell is that!?” Ron said, looking horrified.

“It’s called a rose Ronald,” Ginny pointed out, “You know, commonly found in gardens and given as gifts.”

“I know that! But why is Hermione getting one?” he said, now with curiosity.

“Who is it from Hermione?” Harry asked, now interested in what was happening.

“I don’t know” Hermione lied, “There is no letter or note with it.”

“Oh…Hermione has a secret admirer boys, isn’t that nice?” Ginny said as she winked to Hermione.

“Oh…um…err…yeah…real nice…” Ron muttered as he looked gloomily back at his plate.

Hermione knew Harry and Ron cared for her very much and how protective they could be. She loved them for that, but didn’t see why it was a bad thing for her to have a boyfriend, let alone an admirer! Hermione sighed. She couldn’t draw attention to the situation. She simply trimmed the stem down short and placed the rose in her hair.

Harry was watching her closely. He could see that she had an idea who it was from. But why wasn’t she telling them. They are her best friends. They never keep secrets from each other.

“I’ve finished,” hinted Ginny.

“Yeah, ok. Um… see you boys later at dinner?” Hermione asked.

“Ok” Harry and Ron chorused.

As Hermione and Ginny left, Harry leaned in to Ron and whispered, “I think she does know who that rose is from.”

“Really? But why would she lie to us? We never keep secrets” Ron exclaimed.

“I know. I don’t get it either,” Harry sighed.
