Chapter 20: Revealing Secrets...
Lily threw her quill down on her bed in frustration. She was sitting indian-style on her bed working on her Potions essay , although she wasn't getting a thing done. Lily just couldn't stop thinking about everything that was going on in her life, especially with James and Rebecca.
'Maybe I am being completely stupid and irrational,' Lily thought as she got up off her bed and looked at her reflection in her full-length mirror. 'Maybe James and Rebecca are right - maybe I am being a stuck-up brat. Maybe I should apologize to them.'
'Finally catching on now are you?' said the snide little voice in her head.
Lily ignored the voice and with a resolved shake of her head and a last look in the mirror, she walked out of her room and crossed the common room to the door that said "James' room". She hesitated at the door, her hand hovering above her head, preparing to knock. Suddenly, she brought her hand down and turned slightly away from the door.
"It's alright, Lily," she muttered to herself, breathing deeply. "You can do it. Just apologize - it's no big deal."
Taking a couple big breaths, she quickly turned to the door again. Before she could chicken out, she squeezed her eyes shut like she was going in for the plunge and knocked rather timidly on the door.
There was no answer.
Slightly perturbed, Lily knocked again a little louder.
"James?" Lily called out. Deciding that maybe he didn't hear her or was possibly asleep or he just wasn't there, Lily slowly opened the door a crack, peeking her head around the door.
"James, it's me, Li -" Lily stopped dead in her tracks. James was in his room alright, but he was furiously kissing Daphne Holmes, his tie lying on the ground, his shirt unbuttoned a couple of buttons. Lily's jaw dropped as she saw James pulling Daphne's sweater over her head. Lily was so shocked that she quickly tried to get out of James' room, but in the process, she hit her head on the doorframe, causing her to let out a sharp "ouch!" James and Daphne pulled apart and jerked their heads to see Lily poking out around the door, wincing and rubbing her head. James and Daphne were still in a tight embrace, but they both looked very surprised to see the Head Girl staring at them. An awkward silence engulfed the room. Without saying a word, Lily slammed the door and hastily exited the Head's common room, her face burning. Without knowing where else to go, Lily headed in the direction of the Gryffindor common room. For some very strange reason, Lily's insides were churning, and she felt hot tears starting to build up in her eyes. Surely Lily Evans wasn't jealous of James Potter being with another girl?
"Hold on, just a second, Evans!" said an angry voice from behind Lily. Lily wheeled around and found herself standing face to face with a furious James Potter. Lily couldn't help but stare at his toned chest that was showing from the still opened buttons of his shirt, but was quickly brought back to reality when James started to yell at her, his dark eyes cold and his cheeks slightly flushed from running after her. "What do you think you were doing - barging into my room like that? Why didn't you knock? Do I not have any privacy around here?"
Lily gave James an incredulous look. "Excuse me? I did knock, Potter! But obviously you were too busy sucking the face off of that twit that you couldn't hear my knocking, which I might add was pretty damn loud!"
James looked taken aback by Lily's harsh words. "That's beside the point! And don't call Daphne -"
"Oh, no! Did I insult your precious shagging buddy? Oh, how terrible of me!" Lily rolled her eyes and turned to start walking away.
"For your information she's my girlfriend - not that you'd care!" James called to Lily's retreating back.
Lily stopped in her tracks, thankful that she had her back turned to James so that he couldn't see the shock on her face. Without turning around, she retorted in the same harsh tone to mask her surprise, "Oh, well, excuse me!" 'What?' she thought painfully. 'James has a girlfriend?!'
"What did you even want, Evans? Torment me some more? Hit me some more? Huh?"
Lily whipped around, tears burning in her eyes, and walked slowly towards James. "No, James. I came to apologize to you. Me! Apologize to you! And what do I get? A very awkward situation and then you practically biting my head off! Ooh, yeah, that's nice!"
James scoffed, "Oho! You know what's nice? People slapping people! Yeah, that's really nice, Lily!"
Lily glared at James and as James started to storm off, she yelled, "Yeah, well, the Heads’ common room isn't a whore house, so let's keep it that way!"
James sharply wheeled around and came about an inch from Lily's face, "Whore house? Daphne's NOT a whore! And what right do you have to say about it? Have you even looked at some of your friends, Evans?"
"Don't you dare bring Marissa into this! She's done nothing to you!" Lily lashed out.
"Hey, I didn't say who - you did. But now that you mention her, she did do something to me - or rather to one of my friends. She crushed Sirius like she does everytime they go out to run off with some other guy. So until you can keep your friends under control, I suggest you keep your nose out of who I spend my time with."
"What? You don't even know! Marissa had her own reasons for breaking up with Sirius - it wasn't for some other guy! Oh, don't even get me started on who needs to keep their friends under control! You couldn't keep Sirius under control if your life depended on it!"
"I don't even try to! It's none of my business! Just like it's none of your business what I do with my time and who I spend it with. Why do you even care?" Lily opened her mouth to retort, but James cut her off. "You know what? Just drop it. You don't like the way I run my life. Well, I'm sorry I can't be perfect like you." James turned on his heel and marched off back to the Heads’ common room.
Lily felt her legs give away underneath her as she saw James disappear around a corner. The tears that had been building began streaming down her face. What just happened? All she did was accidentally walk in on James snogging his new girlfriend, and he just blew everything out of proportion and yelled at her! What was his problem? What was her problem? Why did she even care? Suddenly, it dawned on her. She knew why she had this churning in her stomach since the moment she saw James kissing Daphne; she knew why she had gotten so angry with James during the fight; she knew why she was so angry at herself for slapping James in the first place.
Lily made her way up the staircase to the girls’ dormitories in the Gryffindor Tower, feeling lightheaded and trying to blink back her tears. After her encounter with James, Lily had sat in the middle of the corridor, staring into space, tears running down her face. She didn't know how long she had been sitting there on the cold stone floor before she finallly roused herself enough to get up. After staring at the portrait to the Head Boy and Girl's room for a moment, Lily had decided she couldn't face James or Daphne just yet, so she had turned and headed down the corner towards the Gryffindor Tower.
Finally making it up to the door of the seventh year girls’ room, Lily paused and took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She was startled when she suddenly heard a loud crash and a shout coming from the room.
Pushing open the door, Lily was greeted with the sight of thousands of feathers floating around the room. Sitting calmly on her trunk, Marissa was inspecting her nails while Katherine Shipley was leaning against Marissa's bed post, waving a hand infront of her face in a futile attempt to get some of the floating feathers out of her face. Lily's attention was drawn to Rebecca, who had just collapsed on her bed, holding the remains of one of the girl’s pillows in her hands.
"Errr... you alright there Rebecca?" Lily tentatively asked, stepping slowly in the room. The three girls turned towards Lily with varying reactions: Katherine gave Lily a large grin, while Marissa smirked and raised an eyebrow at the Head Girl. Rebecca merely stared in Lily's direction with a blank _expression on her face.
"So," Marissa inquired, "finally decided to grace us with your presence?"
Lily wrung her hands and tried to keep the tears at bay. "I... I wanted to apologize for how I treated you both this past week. I had no right to act the way I did and-"
Marissa cut Lily off with a wave of her hand. "Eh, forget about it. Not that big of a deal anymore."
Lily's jaw dropped as she stared at her blonde friend. "Wh-what do you mean? I acted horribly to you guys!
Marissa just shrugged. "We've been friends for seven years! A little argument's not going to change anything."
Lily gave her friends a wobbly smile, and noticed that Rebecca was still sitting on her bed with a blank _expression on her face. "Rebecca? Are you alright? What happened here?" Rebecca shrugged and started twisting some of the shreaded pillow fabric in her hands. Marissa and Katherine both snickered at their friend's lack of response
Marissa began to speak at a breathtaking pace. "Rebecca happened to meet up with Remus in the Common Room, but because he's so distraught over the fact that Daphne is now going out with James who is still oblivious to how Remus feels about her, Remus totally didn't even notice Rebecca. Rebecca's so pissed at Daphne for not being aware of Remus' feelings and the fact that Remus is still unaware of the fact that Rebecca has had a crush on our dear prefect since third year-"
"That's not what I said," Rebecca interupted with a glare towards the blonde girl.
"Well, you only screamed about your anger about Daphne, and it's obvious Remus is unintentionally doing the same to you. Anyways, Rebecca was mad, she stormed up here and promptly started tearing the pillows and blankets apart."
Understanding Rebecca's frustrations, Lily walked over to the bed and climbed over the torn blanket to wrap her arms around her gothic friend.
"Rebecca, I'm really sorry about what I did to James and how I treated the both of you afterwards. And I'm sorry that you're having to go through this mess with Daphne as well. I understand how frustrating the situation is." Rebecca, who had been sitting stiffly in Lily's embrace, finally relaxed and leaned her head on her friend's shoulder. She didn't say anything, but both girls understood that they had forgiven each other.
Marissa eagerly leaned towards Lily. "Lily, what do you mean you understand the frustrating situation with Daphne?"
Lily blushed and suddenly realized what she almost revealed about her feelings towards James. "Ummm... nothing! I don't know what you're talking about!"
Marissa jumped up and pointed her finger at her friend. "LIAR!!! You do too!!"
"No, I don't!!"
"Lily," Marissa asked coyly, "did you know that when you lie...your nostrils flare?"
Lily quickly covered her hands over her nose in horror. "No, they don't!!"
"Yes, they do, they just did!! And that means you're not telling us something!!! SO SPILL!!"
Lily glanced around the room and, noticing that she had all three girls’ attention, she decided to tell them what she was feeling.
"Ummm... well... IfinallyfiguredoutthatireallyreallylikeJames," Lily said in a rush before burying her face in the torn blanket. The three girls couldn't contain their surprise at Lily's rushed announcement.
Lily emerged from the blanket to see that Marissa and Katherine had joined her and Rebecca on the bed and were looking as though Christmas had come early. Lily gushed on about the whole situation, not caring that the three girls were staring at her mercilessly. "It's a complete disaster, though, and I don't know what to do because he's with Daphne now! Little twit... no offense, Katherine," Lily added hastily.
Katherine shrugged. "None taken!"
Lily continued on as if she hadn't been interrupted, tears again starting to billow up in her eyes. "I walked in on them snogging in his room, and they were starting to take off each other’s clothes! It was a nightmare! I was just going to apologize! And then just seeing him with her made me realize that I'm crazy about him, and now he'll probably never have me! Oh, I've just been so horrible to James! It's all my fault! We got in this huge argument after I walked in on him and Daphne, and I don't think I've ever seen him so angry. You should have seen his face - it was scary. I don't think he'll ever forgive me for how I've treated him."
Rebecca put her arm around Lily and tried to pacify her. "Oh, Lily, all isn't lost! If you were to just talk to James -"
"No! I don't want him to know how I feel!" Lily quickly interrupted, shuddering as she remembered her bad experience with Lachlan O'Flannery. "He'd probably just get even more mad at me! And I don't want your help hooking us up! I don't want you to tell him! He's moved on! He has Daphne now," Lily continued, looking absolutely forlorn as she spoke those last words.
Rebecca sighed and nodded, which indicated that she wouldn't tell James.
"What you need, Lily, is a little help from Dr. Eliott," Marissa grinned as she conjured a pair of glasses, put them on the bridge of her nose, and transfigured her bed into a psychiatric couch. Marissa smiled and patted the couch, motioning for Lily to come and lay down so that she could psychoanalyze her.
"Oh, no you don't! I don't need your 'expert advice' on dating, Marissa Eliott!" Lily exclaimed, shaking her head as Rebecca and Katherine burst into laughter.
Marissa sighed and waved her wand, making the glasses disappear and her bed return to its original state. "Fine. Don't let me help you. Your loss." Marissa paused and then started to grin and rub her hands together. "Ooh, but I know what will cheer both you and Rebecca up, Lily! You need a girls night out!"
The girls all smiled in agreement; Rebecca's smile though, was slightly on the evil side. "Heh, I have an idea that will really make this night fun!"
"Ooh!" Marissa giggled with delight. "And what would that be? A fun little prank to pull on the boys for our war before we let out our secret weapon?"
"Nope!" Rebecca said, walking to her trunk and opening it. "Something much better!"
The girls all gathered around her and gasped as they looked into her trunk.
