Chapter 30: Photographic Memories

“Here, let me help you with that?”

“Thanks, Harry.” Hermione dropped her heavy school trunk on to Hogsmeade platform as Harry offered to place it on board for her.

Look at this photograph
Every time I do it makes me laugh
How did our eyes get so red
And what the hell is on his head

She picked up the wicker basket that held Crookshanks then climbed aboard the motionless Hogwarts Express. She wandered down the train to find out where Draco and the others had gotten to.

“In here, Hermione,” she heard Ron shout out. She doubled back and found the red-head peering through an open compartment door.

She stepped inside and sat down next to the open window, making the stuffy compartment; which had nine people in, minus Harry, slightly cooler.

“Are you OK, hunny?” Draco asked sweetly as he wrapped his arm around her waist as he scooted over to sit more closely to her. She nodded and he kissed her lightly on the cheek as she stared out of the window.

“Can you actually believe that we’re leaving Hogwarts once and for all?” Blaise spoke up, making everyone sigh in response, Hermione the loudest.

She continued to stare outside the compartment, her eyes travelling over the vast Scottish landscape that she had called home for the past seven years, not wanting to leave it now.

And this is where I grew up
I think the present owner fixed it up
I never knew we'd ever went without
The second floor is hard for sneaking out

Hermione snapped out of her reminiscence when the door slid open, revealing a heavy breathing Harry, who sat down immediately next to Ginny, who linked her fingers with his.

“You all right, Harry?” Ron asked feeling slightly unnerved about Harry’s pale cheeks and dramatic breathing, that he tossed him a Chocolate Frog.

“I’m fine,” Harry replied, also staring in the direction Hermione was gazing in. “I’m just thinking about everything.”

“What is everything, Harry?” Ginny pondered in his ear, kissing him gently on the cheek, which made Harry wish she hadn’t done that as he gazed at Hermione, who he noticed was deeply silent.

“Just everything that has gone on in these past seven years.” He stopped as the train gave a violent jerk and a whistle, the grey smoke floating past the windows, blocking his and Hermione’s view.

“Yeah, surprisingly… I think I’m going to miss Hogwarts, even though I have dramatically grown up this year, I have always hated that place, but now… I feel as though I have taken warmly to its surroundings,” Draco chuckled loudly, pulling Hermione closer to him.

“What’re you taking about, Draco?” Pansy asked him with a raised eyebrow, with a slight grin plastered on to her lips.

“All the laughs we’ve had, all the hard work we’ve done… now we get to experience the future and work, experience maturity and maybe start a family…” Draco looked at Hermione’s reflection who smiled back to him.

Before she had flinched uncertainly at the prospect of having children. But then she realised that if Luna could go through pregnancy, maybe she could too.

And this is where I went to school
Most of the time had better things to do
Criminal record says I broke in twice
I must have done it half a dozen times

The train moved further and further away from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, never to be seen again, or that’s what none of the people in this compartment thought.

They hoped they would see Hogwarts again, either on a visit or if they applied for a teaching career there or even just to send their own children there, if they tended on having any of course.

I wonder if it's too late
Should I go back and try to graduate
Life's better now then it was back then
If I was them I wouldn't let me in

“What has been the worst experience throughout these seven years?” Harry asked, doubtful that he would get a response to such a stupid answer. But most rose to answer him.

“Mine would have to be,” Blaise began. “Never winning the Quidditch cup for our House… I think I blame Draco for that one, seen as you were always gazing after someone.”

“Sorry mate, I was just keeping my emotions in check, if you want I’ll personally pop you on a broom to see if you can catch up with this train before it enters London?” Draco asked wickedly as he raised his eyes up to him from off Hermione.

Blaise sulked back against the seat while Pansy cuddled up to him, slipping her hand around his neck and kissing his lips lovingly.

Oh oh oh
Oh God I

“Meeting Bellatrix again,” Neville spoke up sheepishly. “I wanted to hurt her so badly for what she did to my parents; she knows that they’ll never get better, and I want to make her pay.” Neville clenched his fists tightly, but only relaxed when Luna placed her small hands over his.

“I would have to say that becoming pregnant so young would be a downfall, but it doesn’t seem that way anymore,” Luna answered, smiling gleefully. “This is because I know my child will have a wonderful father who will support me,” she cupped Neville’s face and closed her eyes and kissed him romantically, just as he wrapped his arms around her stomach protectively.

Every memory of looking out the back door
I had the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye

“I don’t think I have one really,” Harry replied, in a sort of egotistical way that specified his father in a way. “Coming to Hogwarts was amazing and I’ve encountered loads, I just don’t think I have any let-downs. I defeated Voldemort, but I suppose killing off Snape is a set back, don’t you agree?”

Murmurs of agreement rang through the compartment. Hermione; however, continued to stare out into the countryside, not wishing to take part in the conversation.

“What’s yours, Hermione?” Draco asked, hoping to take her mind off the outside world; he had a feeling she felt claustrophobic in this tightly compact compartment.

“What?” Hermione jumped at being startled by Draco’s question. Her hand immediately reached around her neck and pulled out her heart locket, caressing the golden metal. “I dunno really…”

“There has to be something bad that has gone on during Hogwarts that you can remember, even if you mention meeting me I won’t get offended… please don’t mention me?” Draco whispered in a begging fashion, making Hermione giggle silently back.

She refocused her eyes upon the fields where cows were grazing and the tree leaves were blowing in the wind, also making the fragrance of flowers reach her nose. “A lot of things,” she said in a whisper.

“Like what?” Draco pondered as he turned her face back round so he could caress her cheeks which he found really cold and pale, and her eyes were holding back tears.

“Things that I can’t mention to others, and some which I can. The death of Dumbledore, the death of Lupin and the near fatal mishap involving McGonagall… Snape setting this boundary which we have to cross, and all for the power of magic,” she sighed again then wiped away her fallen tears, only to be comforted by the soft motion of Draco rubbing her back.

Every memory of walking out the front door
I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye

“But then there’s something’s which I can remember as happy times…” she continued, turning back around to face everyone. “Sitting under the willow tree, together as peaceful should be… the dances where the music replaced our determined souls… the love we all shared for that special someone, which beat in our hearts still… memories of good times will remain in our minds as though they were of yesterday…” she sniffed, and became all too aware that everyone was sat in silence.

Remember the old arcade
Blew every dollar that we ever made
The cops hated us hangin' out
They say somebody went and burned it down

“That was really something Hermione,” Harry said comfortingly, rising from his chair and kneeling in front of her, taking her hands in his.

Hermione looked down at him and surveyed his features, immediately hugging him for he was crying soundlessly for her words of pain and some of which were happiness still cradling in their hearts.

“Always be here for me, always stay strong for me, will you, Harry?” Hermione whispered softly in his ear, running his hands through his hair.

We used to listen to the radio
And sing along with every song we know
We said someday we'd find out how it feels
To sing to more than just the steering wheel

“Don’t worry… I will be,” he kissed her reassuringly on the cheek and wiped her eyes for her. She moved back into Draco’s protective arms, who also kissed her on the cheek.

The train moved on through the countryside, occasionally passing small towns and villages and once a large city, where Hermione; who had taken the advantage to look out the window again, had seen a large street market being held.

Everyone; apart from herself, had fallen asleep, giving her a chance to think about the prophecy which Lupin had told Draco and herself about last night

“One will betray the worshipped heroes; he will be taken into Hell’s deep sorrows. Another will die at the hands of death, not from stealth, but from bad health.” Hermione recited in a whisper, breathing condensed breath upon the cold window.

“You still not worried about that prophecy are you?” Questioned a voice from somewhere in the compartment. Hermione jumped and noticed a familiar reflection in the window, it kind of looked like… no, she thought to herself, stop being delusional.

“Oi, Hermione!” Someone placed their hand on her shoulder, but her eyes remained focused upon the window. “Are you OK, love?”

She spun in her seat and her eyes connected with Draco’s, who looked dishevelled and weary of Hermione being totally out of herself. “I’m fine, all right… I’m just, paranoid.”

“Don’t be, OK? We’ll get through this, and the other two will help us… maybe this whole prophecy thing will make us understand how to become stronger against evil… make us understand more about ourselves,” Draco cupped his hand under her chin and lifted her sorrowful head.

Kissed the first girl I kissed
I was so nervous that I nearly missed
She's had a couple of kids since then
I haven't seen her since God knows when

“I hope so,” she whispered more to herself than Draco, and snuggled up close to him for warmth and comfort, as the cold, harsh wind blew through the window, sending fearful chills up her spine.

Oh oh oh
Oh God I

An annoying sound was coming from somewhere near Hermione’s ears, but she couldn’t quite make it out. It was a hooting sound as though an owl were in exhaustion and wanted someone to let him in from flying against the rush of the moving train.

Every memory of looking out the back door
I had the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye

Hermione’s eyes slowly opened. She sat up and gazed around the compartment, of which was deadly silent, apart from Ron’s impeccable snores. She rubbed her eyes awake and then surveyed outside.

Every memory of walking out the front door
I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye

She noticed that it was more town based than country landscape, which she felt happy about seen as she was moving closer towards home, but where was that sound coming from?

I miss that town
I miss the faces
You can't erase
You can't replace it
I miss it now
I can't believe it

“Draco…” she began to prod his sides, which he squirmed at and began to fuss at her impatience and throw her hand away from him. “Draco, wake up! I hear something.”

He stretched his muscles and then relaxed and ran over what Hermione had just said. “Yeah, I thought I heard something too, but I don’t know where it’s…” his eyes moved up and to the outside.

“Hey Hermione… I think I found the problem,” he pointed to window, which Hermione took as a gesture to turn round. She gasped when she saw the sight, and wondered how it had gotten into her thoughts in the first place.

A pygmy owl was flying against the force of the train as it moved further and further along the track. The owl twittering as the wind knocked it off course and the billowing smoke blew into its line of vision.

So hard to stay
Too hard to leave it

“Oh dear!” Hermione jumped up and raced to the small opening to rescue the little bird. The owl was caught in her grasp tightly and was brought into the safe confinements of the carriage.

“Who would send an owl to fly against the trains speed like that, just to deliver a letter to us?” Hermione complained as she stroked the owl, who hooted gratefully on her lap. Crookshanks awoke, stunned by the call of the bird, but thankfully he was in his cage, but it didn’t stop him from licking his lips hungrily.

The owl held out its leg and Hermione undid the large envelope that was attached to him. Once it had been delivered, the owl took flight once more and flew out through the open compartment door.

“Who’s it from?” Draco asked purposefully as he looked over her shoulder at the large envelope now sitting on her lap.

“Does it look like I’ve opened it yet?” She answered back sarcastically and began to rip open the parchment type seal. A white folder fell on to her lap as she picked up a letter from the sender.

If I could I relive those days
I know the one thing that would never change

“To Hermione,
I know this isn’t what you expect on a train ride home, but I only received them this morning. I didn’t expect my owl to be up to the job and I hope he wasn’t too baffled by the wind outside. Even though I am only a couple of compartments down from you, I felt it wise not to get them crumpled by sending them along the train by hand.
I hope you like them and I hope you enjoy your future in whatever you may do.
All my love,
Colin Creevy.”

Goodbye, goodbye

Hermione let the letter float to the ground beneath her feet. She had forgotten about the favour she had asked Colin to do for her and her friends that she didn’t feel like opening the other folder.

“Shall I open it?” Draco pondered to her, waving the folder in front of her transfixed eyes, which were uncontrollable around the dizziness she now felt.

She nodded and Draco tore open the seal. He pulled out nine copies of the same thing, each black and white, and each all moving.

“I can’t believe he actually did them, I almost forgot about asking him… I’m so shocked,” Hermione said as she took one off him and looked it over.

Goodbye, goodbye

Her eyes swam in the ghostly tears that she felt from the past. But they weren’t sad feelings, they were happy. She was gazing down at a happy memory which she knew she would never forget… she would keep this close to her heart…

A photographic memory is one that someone can hardly forget, especially when put in a frame. Hermione had made the photograph smaller and had placed it in her locket when she reached home.

Look at this photograph
Every time I do it makes me laugh
Every time I do it makes me

She knew Draco had done the same as they were writing backwards and forwards to one another each and every day.

They were soon to be expected at Number Twelve Grimmauld Place where they would meet up with everyone, to once again recount those long and distant memories, under the Willow tree.

To Be Continued…
