“Of course I can Ana!” I said calmly, “I would be rather surprised and shocked indeed if lily had not been the headgirl!”
“Thanks Deepti, at least someone believes that I am the true deserver of this title,” said lily in somewhat relief.
“Common Lily, I was just kidding. I know no one deserves the title more than you do!” said Ana proudly as if she had been made the head girl instead of Lily. Then she hugged Lily again. “Where have you been until now missy,” said Ana abruptly turning towards me and looking accusingly at me.
“Calm down Ana, I was in some other compartment since I couldn’t find you two and then I thought of writing in my diary since I hadn’t done it since long. I was so deep into writing and then you startled me with your scream. If I hadn’t known you so well I would’ve thought that the death eaters probably invaded the train just like many others have believed to be true.
“Well I was just excited you see. Our lily is head girl! Can’t I just express my excitement in a humanly way?” she said smiling sheepishly.
Just then Lily glanced at her watch and gave out a short gasp. “It’s almost 12 and I am supposed to be in the head’s compartment at 12. Sorry guys you know I hate unpunctuality, so before it strikes 12, I gotta be present at the head’s compartment. So I will catch up with you guys later.” And lily ran without even looking at us.
Lily’s randomness always managed to amuse the two of us.
After Lily rushed out of the compartment, Ana and I sat there chatting and catching up with what had happened in our lives throughout the summer.
“Deepti, it’s our last year at Hogwarts and I don’t like this change” said Ana looking somewhat depressed.
“What do you mean?” I said pretending not to know what she was trying to say. Sometimes I find it amusing to see Ana getting frustrated when people don’t understand what she meant to say at once.
“Oh, common you know what I mean! Why did Dumbledore have to move Hogwarts from London to somewhere in the south-east Asia, which seems to be in the middle of nowhere? It’s not even in the same continent. It’s totally different from England from what I have heard!”
“Don’t worry Ana, you will find it to be amazing. Besides you know I am from south-east Asia and now I am not exactly that bad, am I?”
“Of course not!” she let out a chuckle, “but you know what I mean! The cultures will be different and Dumbledore mentioned it in the letter we got that we would’ve to follow the cultures they follow here. Now how do you think I am going to do that considering I have no clue about anything?” she said somewhat panicked.
“It’s not that hard you see. Besides, we won’t be celebrating every single festival ‘cause if we started doing that then counting the western festivals and the festivals here we wouldn’t have a single day when we aren’t celebrating one or the other festival. It’s just the major ones we are celebrating. Change will be sometimes fun and it will be a new experience in your life just like coming to Hogwarts was to me. And again, it’s not like you are entering a new world; Hogwarts will be same, Hogsmeade will be the same, the train we are riding is the same, the people we will be seeing here is the same.”
“I guess you are right. Buttttt……if everything was the same then why did Dumbledore have to do it?”
“Now don’t act childish Ana, you know why he did it! And he stated it clearly so in the letter we got. Since the previous location of Hogwarts was well exposed to the death eaters, it can’t exactly be considered safe no matter how much protected it seems to be. The death eaters couldn’t possibly guess the new location of Hogwarts. It’s clever on Dumbledore’s part to do so. And also, a little bit of change wouldn’t do any harm to the students, would it?”
“Nope, in fact I am looking forward to this year at Hogwarts. It should be fun to say the least,” Lily said as she entered our compartment.
I was so immersed in trying to convince Ana that this year was going to be fun that I didn’t even hear the door opening to let the red haired girl in. She clearly seemed to be not pleased with something that had happened.
“Oh lily so you are back. How was the meeting and who is the head boy by the way?” said Ana, forgetting about the conversation we were just having and her doubts about Dumbledore’s action. She was too interested to hear what lily had to say.
“You can’t believe what I am going to say,” said Lily her voice a little too loud, “Potter is the head boy!”
“What? How can that be? I tell you Dumbledore is going out of his mind these days. First he changes the location of Hogwarts and now he makes Potter the head boy!”
“Well if Dumbledore has made James the head boy then he must have had reason behind it and who knows James might have actually deserved it. After all we don’t know James too well, do we?” I said calmly. I think I am the only one person in Hogwarts who doesn’t call anyone by their last name no matter how much I despise them. And as far as James is concerned I don’t dislike him as much as lily would’ve wanted me to do. In fact I think James is a really interesting character.
“Yeah, you would think that. After all you aren’t exactly uncomfortable with the change of location of Hogwarts either.”
“Just for my sake Ana, at least give some time before you come to the decision that you don’t like this change and besides Dumbledore said that it’s only for this year; Hogwarts will be located back at London next year. The Hogwarts in London has to go through some repairment and during that process the charms and spells cast around Hogwarts gets weaker. So he had to move it to some place safer and unknown to the death eaters.”
“Ok Deep, just for your sake, I will give it a month time before I start complaining.” She had a faint trace of smile in her face.
“That’s the spirit!” I said giggling a bit, “I don’t get one thing though. How did Dumbledore create an exactly similar Hogsmeade and Hogwarts in the middle of these mountains?”
“Deep don’t you know Dumbledore’s powers or what? He can do many things that we can’t even dream of doing! And besides this magic doesn’t have to be too strong since it’s intended to last for only a year,” said Lily rather confidently.
“But the amazing fact is that even the train ride takes the same amount of time from the King’s Cross station. I would think it would take days. But I guess that’s magic!” I said amused. I still had muggle way of thinking.
“And considering the time we have been riding for in this train, it’s not long before we reach Hogwarts. So you guys better change into your robes,” said a deep and confident male voice, “by the way hi Deepti, Evans and Ana.”
I looked up to see a boy with messy black hair and hazel brown eyes. I gave him a smile, which he returned, and said, “Hi James!”
“I don’t believe we are exactly in first name terms, are we?” said Ana rather annoyed.
“Now wouldn’t it be odd to call you with your last name Ana, considering it’s fish?” said Sirius gliding open the compartment door fully which was only opened halfway through by James.
The three of us looked up once again to see the handsome face of Sirius grinning at us. Lily and Ana just rolled their eyes and I murmured a small hi.
“Whatever,” said Ana rolling her eyes, “but you know they are right, we should be changing.” Saying so Ana went to the changing room. Lily and I did the same.
When we returned back to our compartment, the four marauders, as they liked to call themselves, were comfortably seated in our seats. They took no notice of us as we entered the compartment gliding the door open and closing it behind us.
“Hey this is our compartment. Why are you guys here?” asked Lily bluntly, clearly not wanting to stay with James more than it was necessary to. Then she saw Remus looking at her and said hi to him.
“Well the station is coming up soon and so we thought why not spend the rest of the time with three most charming ladies in the train?” put in Sirius charmingly and winked at no one in particular.
“Do as you wish,” said Lily resignedly and glanced at Peter who was clearly not listening to anything anyone had been saying.
“By the way Deepti, didn’t you say that you were from South-east Asia?” asked Remus.
“Yes,” I said hesitatingly not wanting to repeat what I had said to Ana all over again.
“Then I guess you’ll help us adjust in here?” said James hope clearly shining in his eyes.
Lily was surprised. She was never used to hearing James ask anything with such genuineness because the only thing James asked Lily was if she wanted to go out with him. And no matter how honest James was, Lily would never manage to see honesty glittering in his eyes.
“Of course I will,” I said somewhat relieved that they weren’t among the ones who didn’t like change. In fact I was so tired after convincing Ana that I had forgotten that the marauders were always looking for change, something out of ordinary and they always tried to know more about things which other people showed no interest on. And surprisingly Lily despised even this characteristic of the marauders. One would think that someone made Lily drink some potion because of which she had such a deep hatred for the marauders.
The train came to a stop and by instinct we knew that we were at the Hogsmeade station. Lily and James being the heads, went out of the compartment before the train reached to the actual stop so as to help the first years and other students who needed help to get out of the train and reach safely to their carriages. Slowly students came out of the train one by one and the train was empty. Finally Lily and James climbed onto a carriage headed towards a familiar yet totally different Hogwarts to write a familiar yet totally different chapter in the book of their life.
