His Mother’s Eyes: Prologue

The gravesite was peaceful; actually serene is a better word for it. It was shaded by a willow tree and every week, fresh flowers were place by the tombstone. The groundskeeper was paid extra by the family to keep the grass green and in excellent condition. Only the best for Lily Potter, loving mother, wonderful wife, and caring friend. James went to the grave every week; sometimes he brought Harry with him, hoping to keep the boy remembering his mother.

I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave I wish that you would just leave
Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone

Life was rough for James. He tried time and again to forget that fateful October night when the unthinkable happened.
~*~
Lily had had an uneasy feeling that night, but James passed it off as Halloween jitters. Lily had never liked the holiday. Even in school she had been known to skip the feast and study in the library. It was just weird how creped out Lily would get around Halloween. James tried everything he could think of to get her to not think about strange evils in the night, but for some reason, she kept saying that something didn’t feel right.

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

That night, Lily insisted that they keep Harry in their room with them so they could protect him from the evils that might come in the night. Usually James would have protested, but since it was Halloween, he moved Harry’s crib into their room. James wiped the sweat off his forehead, he was trying to show Lily that he could survive without magic by moving Harry’s crib using his own strength. All he had succeeded in doing was making Lily laugh at his struggle. “James, you do realize that even if you used magic to move that be, I would still treat you like you were the strongest man alive.”

James looked at her in mock exasperation, “Why didn’t you tell me that when I started?”

Lily just shrugged and went back to staring out of the window at the night sky, “Wonder where he’s going to strike tonight.”

James walked over to the window seat where Lily was sitting and wrapped his arms around her, “I’m not sure, babe, but don’t you worry you pretty little head about it, Dumbledore has everything under control. There’s nothing to worry about.”

Lily rested her head against James’s shoulder and just enjoyed the safe warm feeling that she got from being there. For just one moment she forgot all of her fears and let James’s words comfort her worried and troubled thoughts.

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me

About midnight, Lily calmed down enough to fall into a restless sleep. James couldn’t sleep, not with Lily as uneasy as she was. He just looked at her as she lay there peacefully sleeping while the night slowly faded from night to morning. She is so beautiful! James thought to himself as he watched his sleeping wife.
~*~
It was late and James started to drift off to sleep. He was so tired of fighting sleep that he let his head sink back into the soft pillows on his bed. He hoped that his usual dream wouldn’t come, the one about Lily. In fact his last thought as he drifted off to sleep was questioning why the dream came so often.

You used to captivate me by your resonating light
Now I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away oh all the sanity in me

“JAMES!!!”

He jolted awake at the scream, the same dream, the one with the ending that he couldn’t change no matter what he did. He wasn’t fast enough, didn’t plan ahead far enough, didn’t think that the unthinkable could actually happen! Why had this happened to him and Lily!

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

It had taken him six year to convince Lily to give him the time of day. Once that happened the days seemed to fly by, before either of them knew what was happening, James was asking Lily to marry him. What surprised him even more was that she had burst into tears once the question had passed through his lips.

Oh, Great, look what you did James, you moron! You’ve made her cry! There is no way she’s going to marry you! If fact, she probably wants to break up, she won’t be the only one crying for long!

James offered Lily a handkerchief to wipe her tears with. She smiled at him and accepted it. She turned away from him to wipe off her face. James mentally prepared himself for the worst, but he still hoped for the best. When Lily turned around she handed James his handkerchief back. Saying nothing she slid her arms around his neck and stood on tiptoe to reach his lips, giving him a sweet and gentle kiss, “I would be honored to be your wife, James Potter,” she whispered to him and kissed him again. It took James a matter of seconds to process what she had said before her picked her up and kissed her back passionately.

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me

Things were going great for James and Lily. They had a picture perfect wedding. Everything was going perfectly, they were soon expecting their first child. James and Lily were the happiest couple alive. They had a beautiful house in a great neighborhood, wonderful friends that would stop by just to say hello and find our how they were doing, and best of all, Lily actually got along with her in-laws. Things had never been better, and then little Harry was born. Harry was the best thing to happen to Lily and James, they took pictures with their little bundle of joy every chance they got. Pictures lined the walls of their home and photo albums lined the shelf stuffed full of picture with the young family smiling and waving at the people that opened them up.
~*~
James still looked at these pictures daily, to try to ease the pain that ripped away at his heart every single moment that he was alone. He couldn’t get over Lily that was all there was to it.

I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along
~*~
That night, shortly after Lily had fallen asleep, James began to hear noises outside. He glanced at his sleeping wife wondering if he should wake her, It’s just a stray cat, nothing to worry her about, especially in the state of mind that she’s in right now. James thought as he climbed out of bed, I’ll go chase it away and be back before she even realizes that I’m gone!

James was so confident in his thought that he didn’t even think to take his wand from the bedside table with him. He slipped downstairs cautious of the creaky steps that might wake Lily. He went to the back door where he had heard the noises coming from. He unlocked the door and turned the knob to open the door when an explosion blasted the door off its hinges throwing James into the wall behind him hard. The last thing he remembered seeing was a picture of Lily and him right after their wedding, then the world went black.

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
~*~
The funeral was unbearable. James was still unsure how the Dark Lord had not realized that James wasn’t dead. He must have looked terrible that night. When they finally let him see Lily he remembered thinking that she looked like she was sleeping. Maybe if I kiss her she will wake up like in that Muggle fairy tale James thought as he gently stroked her cold face. She still looked beautiful. “Lily, you didn’t have to died for me to think you were the most beautiful woman in the world!” he sobbed.

Remus and Sirius stood silently by their grieving friend. This was the beginning of a new painful life for their friend and neither of them would have wished this pain on their worst enemy. The saddest part of the whole funeral was that Lily’s sister Petunia didn’t show up to support her grieving brother-in-law. James cried and sobbed uncontrollably throughout the whole service.

At the gravesite, his father wrapped an arm around James’s heaving shoulders. Sirius and Remus comforted Mrs. Potter who was holding little Harry who had somehow miraculously survived the killing curse that had killed his mother. The group remained long after the rest of the crowd had left and Mrs. Potter only left when Harry started to fuss because he was tired and hungry.

In the end it was only James at the grave silent tears still falling down his face, this wasn’t supposed to happen! he angrily thought.

James wiped his eyes on the sleeve of his robe. He didn’t want to keep on living life without Lily, but he knew he had to keep living for Harry. What kind of life would that little baby live without his mother and father. James stood up from the bench next to Lily’s grave, “Lily, I want to make you a promise right here, and I really will keep it!” he said to the tombstone bearing his wife’s name, “I will raise Harry to be everything we ever dreamed he would be! I will keep living my life so that Harry will have a life,” he turned as if to leave, then turned back, “I will never forget you,” he added softly as he walked back toward his parents, Sirius, Remus, and his son Harry.

A/N: Sorry that this was so confusing and depressing, but it will make sense later and it won't be so sad, I promise! I was just trying a new way of introducing my story.
