Chapter 16: “Go on – let me have it!”
“Okay, everyone! Uh, great practice!” James called to his slightly disgruntled team as they all headed off towards the locker room. The truth was the Gryffindor Quidditch team had seen better days. The whole practice Rebecca and Sirius had been bickering – causing them to loose focus, Katherine had accidentally smacked herself in her face with her bat, Gideon Prewett almost fell off his broom trying to make a save, and Lily had not been able to catch the Snitch once.
Lily was at the back of the group, her head down, and was absolutely furious with herself.
“Hey, Evans, wait up!” called James. Lily didn’t slow her pace at all and tried to ignore the Quidditch Captain. James had to sprint to catch up with her.
“Good job today, Lily,” James breathed heavily, slightly touching her arm. When he received no response or acknowledgement, he continued, “You were flying well.”
Lily stopped abruptly and spun around to face James, her hair whipping around to smack her heated cheeks. “James, I was terrible! I don’t think I’ve ever been so bad at anything in my life! I was complete rubbish!”
James gave a small chuckle. “Lily, this was your first practice! You did fine! So what if you didn’t even catch the Snitch! Some Quidditch games have lasted days because the Seekers couldn’t find the Snitch. It’s really not a big deal.”
“It’s a big deal to me, James!” Lily exclaimed exasperatedly. “I don’t want to play if I’m going to make Gryffindor loose! God, why did I even agree to this stupid idea in the first place?” Lily shook her head in disgust and looked down at the ground.
“Lily, you agreed to it, because you’re brilliant at it!” James said as Lily scoffed, his hand ruffling his messy mop of hair, frustrated that she was making such a big deal of the situation. “You’ve got great speed and concentration! You play with a passion that even the best players don’t have! And you’re smart, which makes you play smart and have strategies that blow all the other Seekers in the school away! Lily -” James slightly hesitated, “Lily, you’re amazing.”
Lily’s head snapped up, her eyes blazing. Somehow Lily had the feeling that James wasn’t talking about her Quidditch abilities when he said that last sentence – which, for some reason, made her even angrier. “Potter, you are completely missing the point!” she yelled, her face slowly turning a deep red, causing James to be mesmerized by her passion. “All that stuff you said – that was me at the tryouts! That wasn’t me tonight! You know what? My audition was a fluke! A fluke, Potter! That, and you just chose me to be on the team because of how you feel about me! Admit it!”
James looked abashed and was brought out of his reverie of admiration. “What?! How could you even think that, Lily? I picked you because of your pure talent! How I feel about you had nothing to do with it! Nothing!”
“Oh, yeah, sure, Potter,” Lily scoffed, completely unaware that the sky was steadily getting darker around them as thunder clouds started to gather and they just stood in the middle of the Quidditch pitch yelling at each other. “Yeah, my pure talent of sucking at Quidditch and single handedly making Gryffindor LOOSE! Oh, and that’s complete crap about your feelings not having anything to do with it! So go ahead Potter! Here’s your chance! Why aren’t you asking me out on bended knee and telling me how much you adore me as you usually do in inappropriate situations? Go on – let me have it!”
James couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Lily was going insane. But those last couple of sentences hit him hard, causing himself to get riled up. “Oh, go on, huh? Sure! Why not? Yeah, Lily – I’m freaking crazy about you!! Are you happy now? I said it!” Lily just stared at him in shock, still red in the face. Her silence encouraged James to continue, with his hands waving around for emphasis, his intense hazel eyes never leaving her passionate green ones. “It’s not like you’re ever going to care, though! You’ve never even given me a chance! You just think that I’m a selfish, horny jock and that I don’t have a single sensitive bone in my body! But for some odd reason, I still fancy you like nothing else, and I can’t stop thinking about you! Yeah, I can’t stop thinking about you even though you are so self-centered, stuck-up, and bad tempered!”
“Ha! Oh, yeah, James, what a way to my heart by insulting me!” Lily yelled, her eyes flashing. “Is this how you charm all your dumb-witted girlfriends? I don’t have to listen to this!” And with that, she started to march away, still yelling at him, the rain starting to fall. “And you still haven’t admitted that the only reason why you let me on the team is because you want to -” Lily was cut off by feeling a pair of hands grabbing her arms roughly as James spun her around, and before she knew what was happening James Potter’s lips were on hers. She tensed up immediately, her eyes open wide in shock, but James didn’t break the kiss. Suddenly, Lily was enticed by his touch, the smell that radiated off his skin, and the rain drops that were drenching both of them. She felt herself relax, enjoying the feeling of his lips slowly caressing hers… until she finally came to her senses and realized that she was, in fact, kissing James Potter. Disgusted with herself for giving in to James, Lily pushed him roughly away and before she knew what she was doing, she slapped him across the face. Hard.
James stared at her in shock, his hand going up to his cheek where a red, raw spot was slowly growing. His hazel eyes were filled with an unexplainable hurt and longing. But suddenly, it seemed as though James had put on a mask, for he was showing no emotion whatsoever.
Lily’s jaw dropped in horror of what she just did and her hands flew up to her mouth. “James, I – ”
“That’s it, Lily,” James said steely. “I’m done. I’m done with you.” Circling around, James marched off towards the castle, leaving Lily in the rain – drenched in her confusion.
