Chapter 24: Past, Present And Future

*~*~*

As Draco played with Hermione’s hair under that famous willow tree they had grown to thank for the cooling shade throughout the summer term, he began to think about the past year they had lived through together.

(So yesterday)
(So yesterday)
(So yesterday)

It may have been the past, he thought, but he had to get used to the idea that many things which had occurred then were due to him.

He so wished for the future to be now, but even though it was every minute ticking by that had once been that abyss, he knew that everything would remain in the past to him.

He would try to forget what had overcome him in his sixth year. He would still feel that guilt bubble in his stomach for killing Dumbledore; he would still feel his eyes glisten with tears when he realised that someone had forgiven him.

You can change your life (if you wanna)
You can change your clothes (if you wanna)
If can change your mind
Well that's the way it goes

Hermione was all he lived for now, that’s why he had jumped in front of her down in the Chamber of Secrets.

She was his and his alone. And he knew that if he said that out loud, she would go off it with him, but he just melted at the sight of her big, brown eyes, and the chocolate scented hair that was hers, too.

He just loved her, and she knew that too. But for how long that would last, he could only guess. He knew that Snape, his mother and Bellatrix were still after him; after all he had betrayed their master.

But he didn’t care right at that moment. All he cared about was not caring about the past, it was how he was going to spend his last remaining school days with his new-found friends, and his beloved.

Draco planted a kiss on Hermione’s rosy cheek and she tucked his long, blonde hair back behind his ear. He smiled down at her and then stopped playing with her hair, but took her hand and lay down next to her.

And I wanna believe you,
When you tell me that it'll be OK,
Yeah I try to believe you,
But I don't

Now that their N.E.W.Ts were behind them, Hermione gave her friends and herself the time to relax; homework was not an option anymore, she had said. It was the future.

She didn’t know what she wanted to do in the future, as long as it involved Draco. She hoped to stay in touch with Harry and Ron, for they had been her best friends throughout their years at Hogwarts.

She knew that she would be seeing Ginny as well, and who could forget the Neville and Luna get together (they had settled on having a winter wedding, near Christmas probably). It was all good in her eyes, but she still felt sad at her past.

Never, in her wildest and her most imaginative dream did she expect that she would fall for Draco Malfoy, the evilest prat she had ever laid eyes on, the most crudest boy she could’ve had the worst opportunity to work with…

But I'm gonna keep your jeans
And your old black hat (Cuz I wanna)
They look good on me
You're never gonna get them back

But who can deny that everyone loves a rebel (as Rita Skeeter would put it)? She loved him for who he was now, not for his purity and money or whatever else he had.

She truly believed that he had changed and that he loved her. So with that, she loved him back, and with trust being the most important thing in a relationship, she; again, believed that they would stay together forever.

Again, she came across the nightmare of which she had witnessed Snape coming back into their lives. She even relived the very moment, waking up in rationale sweats in the bed she now shared with Draco.

When you say that it's gonna be,
It always turns out to be a different way,
I try to believe you,
Not today, today, today, today, today…

She couldn’t bare the fact that he had done so many things to hurt so many people. But she was glad that all the Professors were now back at Hogwarts and enjoying the peaceful time off their feet.

And yet, she still felt the burning pain of depression in her heart when she thought back to finding out that Mad-Eye Moody had died because of Snape.

At least not today
Not today
Not today, cuz…

It was even worse when she remembered seeing Lupin’s limp form in the puddle-strewn street of Hogsmeade… yes, it was hard to think about those things now, but when they did crop up, you just had to grip your seat and enjoy the ridiculing ride of the past.

Yes, she was happy that he had come back, and yes she was happy that she was with Draco now… and yes she was happy about leaving in two weeks and having to sort out the Graduation Party…

If it's over let it go and
Come tomorrow it will seem
So yesterday
So yesterday
I'm just a bird
That’s already flown away

But who could deny that during the past, she had noticed quite a many of things. Many of these things were involved in the matters of her friends.

In Harry, she had spotted a brave and powerful person; he could do anything with a single wave a wand. She couldn’t do anything that he had done, and that’s what made her look up to him… he was her best friend and she thanked him for that. She loved him, yes she admitted it, but that was ages ago, she still had Draco and that’s who she counted on.

Laugh it off
Let it go and
When you wake up it will seem
So yesterday
So yesterday
Haven't you heard that I'm gonna be OK

Ron, when had she ever laid eyes on a more difficult person to put up with? She may have had her disagreements with him, but she still loved him. She had told him that he was the first person who she had ever loved truly, and it would remain that way between them. He was sarcastic in the things in which he, Harry and she did, but she loved him for who he was… the brave Ron who she had grown to admire.

The Golden Trio, she knew, would remain together forever and always… or she would hunt them down and kill them both (she threatened them with this the night before after she had cried into both of them).

I don't know how I feel,
Tomorrow, tomorrow,
I don't know what to say,
Tomorrow, tomorrow
Is a different day

It was difficult to tell which was harder to do… either look back on to the past, or look forward into the future. Either way, it was different to the present. And in each era, she would remember each and every time of When Tears Fall.

*~*~*

Ha!
Okay

Ron noticed that Hermione was off in her own world, thinking presumably. He distinctly saw the faint glimmer of a tear fall down her soft and rosy cheek.

She’s remembering about what happened between her and me, he thought. Ever since they had split up, he had been thinking of what had happened between them.

It's always been up to you,
It's turning around,
It's up to me,
I'm gonna do what I have to do,
Just don't

Their first kiss under the mistletoe bunches in the Great Hall at the Christmas Ball, the wonderful evenings they shared by the fire in the Gryffindor common room, and just hearing her screaming his name when he was flying out on the Quidditch pitch.

He still enjoyed sneaking quick glimpses at her every once and awhile, but he had to be careful of Malfoy now.

You can say you're bored (If you wanna)
You could act real tough (If you wanna)
You could say you're torn
But I've heard enough

He had always been weary around the Slytherin Prince and the Death Eater’s son, but he couldn’t help but admiring him for his care and love for Hermione. It was love that kept him back from pummelling Malfoy to the ground.

Yes, he still had the bubbling jealousy in his heart for he was Hermione’s token of love now. He, Ron, just wanted his one, true love back in his arms forever more.

Give me a little time,
Leave me alone a little while,
Maybe it's not too late,
Not today, today, today, today, today…

But that was in the past now, he just had to try and get rid of his unwanted feeling for Hermione. But no matter how hard he tried to get rid of it, he just seemed to fall head over heels for her again.

Thank you
You've made my mind up for me
When you started to ignore me
You won't see a single tear
It isn't gonna happen here

Every time he looked at her, she brought on the great swooping feeling in his stomach again. But it was all in the past, he thought. And the future looked bright ahead for him… he knew what he wanted to do. But what he wanted to do, brought on many memories of guilt, pain and; worst of all, love.

At least not today
Not today
Not today, cuz…

Harry stared at Ron, thinking about how they had come to be friends… oh yes, those were the days. He followed Ron’s gaze on to Hermione and remembered the night when he and Ron had saved her from a mountain troll, making them become friends instantly afterwards.

Oh yes, the good old days, all the past aren’t they. But suppose you can look back on them and think of all the possible ways to relive them and make changes.

If it's over let it go and
Come tomorrow it will seem
So yesterday
So yesterday
I'm just a bird
That’s already flown away

Unfortunately, there is no way to change the course of time; unless you had a time-turner, and again, Harry thought back to the time when he had travelled with Hermione backwards to save Sirius.

Sirius was still on Harry’s mind, who could forget him? He was the closest thing to Harry for a parent and he missed him so much. He still believed that it was his fault, he shouldn’t have believed Voldemort’s empty threat… the only thing that the Dark Lord wanted was now out of his reach.

Laugh it off
Let it go and
When you wake up it will seem
So yesterday
So yesterday
Haven't you heard that I'm gonna be ok

Harry emitted a heavy sigh and everybody looked his way. He waved them off and told them that there was nothing to worry about.

He was relieved that Voldemort had now gone from his life and everybody else’s. But he was so overcome with happiness on that “fatal” day, that he forgot that there was still a large threat.

The Death Eaters were still at large. Some of them had perished in the War, but Harry still had to think of ways to rid the world of evil from Snape, Narcissa and Bellatrix.

You got it, Harry was still intending to play the hero… he felt invincible after he had killed Voldemort, he remembered the day on the battlefield as though it had only just happened yesterday…

I don't know how I feel,
tomorrow, tomorrow,
I don't know what to say,
tomorrow, tomorrow
Is a different day

Harry shook his head frantically… he didn’t like to think of such a thing at the present time. He wanted to think about the future, not the past. What would happen when tomorrow came round the corner?

Would he defeat Snape and his cronies like he had done Voldemort? Or would he fall at the feet of the greasy-haired man’s robes, like the coward he had always thought he would be until he found out he was a wizard.

He still thought back to the days when he cowered in fright at the raft of the Dursleys, but they were the chickens now. The Durlseys had thought they had got rid of him when he went back to Hogwarts at the beginning of the year…

How wrong were they?! He would probably, owing to the last wishes of Dumbledore, visit back there and see how they were doing, just like the perfect surrogate son they had always wanted.

Fat chance, Harry thought, and he smiled widely at the reference had had presumably made about his cousin Dudley.

What would he do after he had played the hero for the very last time? He could go into the Ministry and work as an Auror, he had always fancied the job ever since Mad-Eye Moody had mentioned it.

Hey yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah
And I know I'm not ready,
Hey yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah
Maybe tomorrow

Or he could play for a Quidditch team in Britain? He remembered the first time he had ever rode a broom… the feeling of the wind in his hair and the touch of any of his owned brooms beneath him.

He knew that any team would be happy to take him on board… probably owing to the fact to actually see him up close and to actually have a decent conversation with the boy-who-lived.

Hey yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah yeah yeah
I'm not ready,
Hey yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah
Maybe tomorrow

But his other choice was to simply remain here, and work full-time as Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor. He knew that McGonagall could count on him, and that he could count on her to give him the job.

After all, Hogwarts was his home… he didn’t really want to leave, but he knew that he had to.

If you're over me
I'm already over you
If it's all been done
What is left to do
How can you hang up
If the line is dead

He had Ginny back in his arms, too. He hoped they would be able to start a family after they got married. He knew that was a fact because he asked Ginny of what she would do if he proposed to her.

And I wanna believe you,
When you tell me that it'll be ok,
Yeah I try to believe you,
Not today, today, today, today, today…

She had given him a suspicious look when she lifted his arm away from her as they were sitting on the red couch by the Gryffindor common room fire. And then she smiled gleefully and planted a kiss on his smirking lips.

If you wanna walk out
I'm a step ahead
If you're moving on
I'm already gone
If the light is off
Then it isn't on

Harry then focused on how Ron would feel about him becoming a brother-in law. He supposed he would be a bit uncertain about his sister being married at such a young age.

At least not today
Not today
Not today, cuz…

But then again, he and Ron had been the best of friends throughout their lives at Hogwarts, and he hoped that Ron would be happy about having him committed to his sister and being part of the Weasley family.

Hermione would still be the only reason he would look back at all the time he spent at Hogwarts. She had helped him on many occasions, especially in the Triwizard Tournament and homework pieces.

If it's over let it go and
Come tomorrow it will seem
So yesterday
So yesterday
I'm just a bird
That’s already flown away

He loved her dearly for all her help, but he wished that he could mean something more to her. He had always found her attractive, but to love her was so hard to come by.

But as he looked behind him to stare up at the castle of where his home of the last seven years had been, he had realised that he had learned many things inside those walls.

Laugh it off
Let it go and
When you wake up it will seem
So yesterday
So yesterday
Haven't you heard you're so (yesterday)

Things that would help him in later life and something’s in which would help him out; not in careers, but in his actual self. And he would like to thank his friends for helping him to understand the meaning of something which he had never thought of before, something of which had come by him in the last couple of years.

If it's over let it go and
Come tomorrow it will seem
So yesterday
So yesterday
I'm just a bird
That’s already flown away

Something which he and no one he knew alike valued above all else…

Laugh it off
Let it go and
When you wake up it will seem

Tomorrow it may change
Tomorrow it may change
Tomorrow it may change
Tomorrow it may change

So yesterday
So yesterday
Haven't you heard that I'm gonna be OK

Love.

Song: So Yesterday by Hilary Duff (just bold). I love her songs, but please do tell me if this song doesn’t go with this chapter; I couldn’t find any other good ones! And also Tomorrow by Avril Lavigne (bold and italics)… She rocks too!

A/N: Again I apologize to Shaz if this chapter is not up to standard ‘cause I did not write this down on paper first. It’s all from the top of my head! Please review!
