"So how do you think it's going?" Brigid asked Lily.
Lily nodded at Elle, who was staring off into space with a slight smile on her face, and said in an undertone, "I don't know. Is she going be able to finish it?"
"Don't think so," muttered Brigid.
"What about you and Sirius?" asked Lily.
"All depends on how I handle it," said Brigid. "Oy! Elle, you want to pay attention?"
"Yeah," said Brigid, throwing her a wary look, as though she might explode at any moment. "Anyway, we'll see in the common room after dinner."
"I suppose I should get working on Potter then," said Lily, sounding gloomy.
"Maybe this is a bad idea," said Elle quietly.
Brigid rounded on her. "Elle, you can't get attached to him," she snapped. "Don't you remember what the whole point of this was?"
"I'm not getting attached to him!" protested Elle.
Brigid's lip curled in a sneer and Lily grabbed her arm. "Quit picking on her," she scolded.
Elle had a look on her face that clearly said she was pissed off. "I think I'm going to go," she said, biting her lip.
"No, Elle, don't!" said Brigid. "I'm sorry. I'm just being a bitch."
"Let's go back to the Gryffindor tower," said Lily, sensing that her friends were about to bite each others heads off.
James and his friends were sprawled on the chairs with their books thrown about them. Lily stepped through the portrait hole and spotted them. "Ugh," she said, so that only her friends could hear her. "They act like they own the place."
"Put on a happy smile," muttered Brigid.
Much to their surprise, Elle hurried over to Remus and placed a kiss on his cheek. He grabbed her round the middle and pulled her into his lap. She giggled and rested her head in the crook of his neck.
Lily and Brigid exchanged a look. They had never seen Elle this...unreserved.
"Hey, Evans!" called James. "I was just telling the boys about out little escapade last night."
"You know," he said. "I always knew that you'd fall for my wonderful charm some day."
"Remember the plan," hissed Brigid.
But Lily couldn't contain herself. "Fuck you, Potter," she snapped.
He smirked at her. "Yeah, I know I'm cute," he said.
Lily rolled her eyes and stormed out of the portrait hole. "Didn't she just come in?" asked Remus.
But Sirius's attention had moved to Brigid. "Hey, Mullins," he called. "How about laying another one on me?"
Brigid smiled slightly and said, "Why should I, Black?"
Sirius made his face into a pout. "Are you really gonna resist this?" he said.
"You look like a toad when you make that face," said Remus.
"Yeah," grinned Sirius. "But a very handsome toad."
"Well, I can't say I don't agree," said Brigid, moving to sit in the chair next to Sirius.
"I don't think so," he grunted, reaching out and grabbing her.
Before she knew what had happened, she found herself looking into Sirius's striking gray eyes.
Without missing a beat, Sirius kissed her deeply.
"Do you people have to do this in front of me?" grumbled James.
"Well, no," said Sirius, pulling his lips away from Brigid's. "But if you stay where you are, I'm afraid we do."
With a glare in Sirius's direction, James made his way out the portrait hole, mumbling angrily to himself.
Lily fell face-first onto her bed. She couldn't believe what was happening. There was no denying now. She had feelings for James, and had for a long time. The whole breaking up the Marauders thing was only to spite him.
She slammed her fist against the headboard repeatedly. "Hey, Evans," called James. "Who're you banging up there?"
"The headboard, you ass!" she yelled back.
She turned her head to see James Potter standing in the doorway. I left the goddamn door open, she thought angrily.
"Well, I've never tried shagging a headboard," said James. "But it sounds as though it would be a very, er, interesting experience."
"Funny, Potter," snapped Lily.
"Yeah, I thought so."
There was an awkward pause.
"So, why did you kiss me yesterday?" asked James, looking hopeful.
This was Lily's chance to tell him everything. Tell him how much she loved him, and how badly she wanted to...well, shag him. "I don't know," she said, turning her face back into the pillow.
She heard James cross the room and sit down her bed. "Get off my bed," said Lily, her voice muffled from the pillow.
James looked down at the red-headed girl attempting to ignore him. He leaned over her and whispered in her ear, "You know you want me."
Lily flipped over, probably to tell him off, and found herself looking straight into the beautiful hazel eyes that she adored so much. Her heart leaped into her throat and she whispered, "James..."
She flung herself at him, pressing her lips hungrily against his. The kiss deepened and Lily fell back against her pillow. They parted only for moment when James said, "It's safe to say you don't hate me, right?"
In response, Lily only kissed him.
About a half-hour later, Lily woke with a start. She checked her bedside clock. It was eleven-thirty.
Suddenly, she realized she was not alone. Apparently, James hadn't left. He was lying beside her, his arms wrapped around her body, hugging her to him.
Carefully, so as not to wake him, Lily rolled over so that she was facing him. His glasses were hanging off his face and his messy black hair was even more rumpled than usual. Lily reached out and delicately took off James's glasses and placed them on her table.
When she turned back to him, she felt a horrible surge of guilt. It just felt so right, lying here beside him. But Lily was going to destroy all they could have become just because of her stupid pride.
Lily never thought she'd see the day when she admitted how much she cared for James Potter.
Tomorrow I'll call it all off, she thought, before snuggling into James's chest, closing her eyes, and drifting off into a peaceful sleep.
