Chapter 5

Ginny smiled as she stood in the doorway and watched Blaise tease Draco. She cleared her throat and Draco smiled at her and held out her shoes. “Are you ready to go?”

Putting her shoes on Ginny shrugged. “I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”

Draco smiled, stood up, and took Ginny’s hand and walked out the door with her. Ginny smiled at the way that he continued to hold hands with her as they walked through the hallways. A few people walking by raised their eyebrows in her direction, but no one said anything to her. She looked over at Draco to see if he noticed the reaction that they were getting and she saw that he was carrying his wand in his other hand. “Is there a reason that you have your wand out?”

“Actually, I threatened to hex anyone who gave you any trouble when we came down to dinner tonight. I thought that having my wand out might remind some people to be on their best behavior.”

Ginny laughed. “Did you smirk while you said that?”

Draco smiled. “No I decided to go with a sneer instead.”

“Oh, good choice, that was probably more effective.” Ginny laughed as they approached the entry to the great hall. “Uhm you know, we never discussed where we were going to sit once we got here.”

“Well, why don’t you sit with Hermione, and I’ll sit where I normally do. Then when you’re ready we can walk out together.”

“Alright, but what about after dinner?”

“We’ll do whatever you want, ok? Now take a deep breath because we are going to walk in there with our heads held high. You’re a girl who shoots fireballs at people remember?”

“You’re right.” Ginny squared her shoulders and a smile replaced the worried look that had been on her face. “ Let’s go.”

When they walked into the great hall, all conversation ceased for a moment, and then Draco casually flicked his wand around in the air. Conversation quickly picked back up, and Ginny smiled up at Draco and noticed the look on his face. “Is that the sneer thing you were talking about?”

“Yes”, Draco stopped sneering to smile at her. “But I think I probably just ruined the effect by smiling at you.”

Ginny laughed and then she spotted Hermione sitting with Ron. “Oh, there’s Hermione. I’m going to go sit down now.”

“Alright.” Draco leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. “I’ll see you in a little bit.”

Ginny smiled and sat down next to Hermione giving her best friend a sideways hug. “Hi Hermione, hi Ron. Did you get the owl I sent you?”

Hermione laughed. “Yes I did. I think it was the only thing that kept Ron from breaking down Draco’s door.”

Ginny leaned around Hermione to look at Ron. “Are you ok now Ron?”

Ron frowned. “Let’s see, yesterday you were dating my best friend, and today you are apparently dating, and I use that term in place of a much less delicate term, the arrogant prat who has given me nothing but grief for the past six years.”

Ginny frowned. “I know it doesn’t make much sense right now. But it just feels right.” She shrugged. “I beat him at Wizard’s chess you know.”

Ron smiled. “You did. How did he take that?”

“About as well as Percy did when I beat him that first time when I was five years old.”

Ron laughed. “That well huh?”

“Yeah, but then he apologized.”

Ron frowned again. “I didn’t think Malfoy’s apologized for anything.”

“See that’s the point. He’s really different with me. It’s like the whole smirking sneering thing is this public act. He did go get a pygmy owl in the cold weather this morning so that I could owl you. All I had to do was ask him.”

Ron began to pile food onto his plate. “ Ok, so maybe when he is with you he is nice. But what about Harry?”

Ginny sighed. “Harry and I should have broken up months ago, I suspect he’s been seeing that Rhonda girl for awhile now. But it’s funny because I’m really not that mad at him. It was just the way that I found out.”

Hermione chuckled. “I’ve never seen anything so funny as Harry hiding behind that statue trying to dodge fireballs and tomatoes.”

Ginny laughed. “That was quite fun actually. So where is Harry?”

Ron pointed towards the Ravenclaw table. “He’s been eating with Rhonda. A lot of your fellow Gryffindor’s have been giving him grief.”

“Oh, well tell them thanks, but that’s ok. They can stop now.” Ginny ate a little bit of her food and then she said. “Oh Hermione did you know…” and then she leaned over and whispered in Hermione’s ear. All that Ron picked up was the word wall, and then Hermione was laughing.

“Actually I did know about that.” Hermione smiled and patted Ron on the arm fondly.

Ginny appeared surprised for a moment. “Well how come no one ever told me about that.”

“Told her about what?” Ron asked suspiciously.

Hermione smiled at him. “Uhm the thing, with the wall, that we do.”

“Oh”, Ron smiled dreamily for a moment, and the something dawned on him. “Wait a minute are you saying that you and Malfoy..”

Ginny smiled. “Do you really want me to answer that question?”

“No, absolutely not, and please change the topic of conversation because you have no idea how disturbing this is for me.”

Ginny laughed. “So you just want me to pretend that we’re playing Wizard’s chess till all hours of the morning?”

“Yes, and I choose to believe that after you beat him three or four times he sits and cries on Blaise’s shoulder, and then you stay up all night knitting tea cozies.”

Hermione and Ginny laughed at the funny picture that Ron had painted. Hermione leaned and whispered a question to Ginny. Ginny gasped and then leaned over and whispered something back that made Hermione raise her eyebrows. Ron looked at them both in disgust.

Draco watched as Ginny giggled with Hermione and he smiled. Blaise and Pansy had arrived, and Pansy was giving him a funny look. “What is it Pansy?”

“Is it my imagination, or do you smell like vanilla?”

Draco frowned. “Damn bubble bath.”

Pansy laughed. “Draco Malfoy, taking bubble baths, getting pygmy owls, and kissing a girl on the cheek. What is this world coming to?”

Draco glared at Blaise. “Don’t you have anything better to talk about?”

Blaise smiled. “Actually no, whether you realize it or not. You and Ginny are the hot topic of conversation right now. People are actually placing bets on how long it will take until you get tired of her and toss her out.”

“I’m glad to see people think so much of me. But the problem is they don’t know about her, do they?”

Blaise rolled his eyes at Pansy. “Little Miss Sweetness and Light has turned our friend cryptic.”

Pansy frowned. “If she is Miss Sweetness and Light, then what am I?”

Blaise leaned over and whispered in her ear. “Well I tried to find that out last night didn’t I? But you weren’t interested.”

Pansy smiled. “Maybe you just need to try a little harder.”

Draco saw that Ginny was waving at him. He walked over and she scooted over on the bench and made room for him to sit down. He smirked at her and then sat down. Collin Creevey looked up to see who had sat down next to him and looked at Draco in disbelief. Draco sighed. “What?”

Collin smiled. “Oh nothing. I was just waiting to see if the bench was going to go up in flames or anything.”

Ginny laughed and Draco glared at her. “You are ruining my reputation.”

Hermione and Ron laughed. Draco looked at Ron. “So I can assume that you and your brother’s will not be breaking down my door later this evening if Ginny decides to come stay with me?”

Ron sighed. “and I was really looking forward to that too. But no, since she is over eighteen she is free to make her own asinine decisions.”

“Well thank you for that ringing endorsement.” He looked at Ginny. “Can we leave now, or do I need to hear what everyone at this table thinks of me?”

Ginny smiled. “No, I think we’re good. Hey did you know that it snowed outside today?”

“Yes, as I remember, this morning I walked out to the owlery in a small blizzard to get you a damn pygmy owl.”

Ginny smiled. “Oh that’s right. Well would you want to go for a walk in the snow with me?”

“You mean that cold wet stuff that seeps into your shoes? Sure that sounds like a great idea.” Draco stood up and grabbed Ginny’s hand and they walked out of the great hall together.

Hermione smiled at Ron. “Did you hear that?”

“Of course I heard that. I’m sitting right here.”

“Ok, but do you know what that means?”

Ron looked at Hermione. “Well I could say that it means they are going for a walk in the snow, but I think you already know that. So why don’t you tell me what you are getting at.”

“Well he doesn’t really want to go for a walk in the snow, just like you don’t really like to go stand around in bookstores with me for hours, but you do.” Ron nodded still not seeing where this was going. “Well why do you stand around in book stores with me if you don’t really want to?”

Ron shrugged. “That’s simple, because I love you.”

Hermione looked at him “Exactly.”

Ron looked perplexed for a minute, and then the light dawned on him. “Oh bloody hell. You’re not saying that Malfoy is in love with my sister are you?”

Hermione smiled. “I think he is well on his way, he just doesn’t know it yet.”

Ron frowned. “I liked it better when I could pretend they were just knitting tea cozies.”
