Peter Hanson was flying in the dark. Or that was how it felt like, anyway.
He met Hermione in the library for studying. She looked tired and furious, but her expression softened when she saw him.
“Hi, Hermione,” he said to her, smiling.
She smiled slightly back. “Hello.”
“Shall we sit down, then?”
She nodded curtly before sitting down.
“Lots of homework you want to do?” he asked, trying to start a conversation. Hermione didn’t seem normal. Something had probably happened, but he couldn’t wait; tonight was the night he had been aiming for since the start. It was important to get closer to her now.
Hermione sighed. “Actually, I don’t feel like doing homework.”
His eyes widened and his smile faded a little. “Are you ill?”
“No, I’m not. It’s just that I’ve had an argument with Ron.”
Ron. Ron Weasley. The one he was going to hurt. Ron would pay. “Really?” he said, pretending to be interested. He wanted to get into the topic he had planned, not talking about Weasley who obviously cared for Hermione.
“Yes. But I don’t want to talk about it.” Hermione avoided his eyes.
He almost whispered “Good!”, but controlled himself. “So you aren’t ill… That does please me. Maybe you’re free tonight, then?”
Hermione looked surprised. “I- I don’t kn-”
“Hermione, please,” he said, becoming annoyed with the stupid girl. “A date. With me. Tonight.”
“A date?”
“Indeed.”
Hermione blushed. “Well, I have lots of homework to d-”
“You just told me you didn’t feel like doing homework!” Couldn’t she make decisions? He couldn’t expect too much from her, though. After all, she was just a silly schoolgirl who everyone believed to be smart. “So would you please meet me in the entrance hall tonight, nine o’clock, for a date?” He took her hand, smiling charmingly.
Inside, Peter Hanson screamed. “Don’t do it, Hermione! Don’t, don’t, don’t! You’ll get yourself killed!”
“Shut up,” he muttered.
Hermione, who had just been about to smile, frowned. “Excuse me?”
He smiled again. “Oh, nothing, nothing. I only had a- an argument with… Caroline Dawson earlier. Don’t you care about that. I just couldn’t get her annoying voice out of my head. So what is your answer?”
“I think- I think I say yes.”
“Good!” he said. Peter was broken. “No! No! No, no, no!” he shouted, wishing Hermione could hear him, but she couldn’t. She just grinned to his face, the face he couldn’t control.
He smiled. He was alone in the dormitory, looking at the mirror. “You know you can be quite charming, Hanson?”
Peter said nothing.
“Why don’t you answer me?” Then he began to cackle. “Oh, but of course. You can’t answer me. Is it because you can’t control anything? Is it because the great Stuart has taken over your body? Is it? I think it is.”
“You know that bloody well,” Peter spat. Only Stuart could hear him.
“Not very friendly. I should teach you some manners.”
“You say? Do you have manners when you take over an innocent person’s body, taking control over his life? Do you have manners when all I can do is thinking, talking to you? When I can’t do anything? When you use my body to plan evil things? When you plan on taking revenge, to kill?”
Stuart quit smirking. “You’re too smart for your own good, Hanson. Almost as smart as me, in fact.”
“Does that mean that if I become smarter, I’ll turn into a person like you? I would rather prefer to stay at the level I am on now, if it does.”
Stuart laughed. “But Peter, I’m not a bad person. You see, I’ve lost my brother. I only want revenge. I want to kill.”
“I’m disgusted. I hope someone figures out and drives you out of my body.”
Stuart still laughed. “Haven’t I told you what’ll happen if someone forces me out of you against my will? Not? I’ll tell you, then, Hanson. You’ll die. Slowly and painfully.”
Peter was quiet, didn’t force his mind to speak to that maniac. He wasn’t a Gryffindor, so he had never been really brave. But now, the courage filled him, and then he told Stuart the truth. “I would rather die than continue living like this.”
“Really? I didn’t know you were that brave. But, oh, look at the time! Ten minutes till young miss Granger is supposed to meet up with Peter Hanson! And a little more than ten minutes till she dies. We’d better get going.”
