Ring Of Fire

A ball of hot fire spewed forth from Voldemort’s wand. The fighting stopped as everybody watched the blinding phenomenon take place.

The heat was overwhelming for Hermione. She needed air, she could not breathe, it burned! She fell to her knees holding her arms over her head. Her eyes were closed but she could still see the fire’s light behind her eyelids.

She heard people screaming and opened her eyes to see what had happened. Her mouth dropped open as she stared in disbelief at what she saw.

Rings of fire covered the Hogwarts grounds. She witnessed some ignorant witches and wizards run through the fire and scream in agony as they slowly burned to death.

Horror and shock passed through Hermione in waves. She stood, shaking like a leaf, her eyes wide open. One thought registered in her mind.

They were all going to die.

Love is a burning thing,
And it makes a fiery ring

“Hermione!” Neville’s voice cried from not so far away. She turned and found her waist being hugged by two large arms.

“Neville!” Hermione cried over the screams for help. He continued to hug her, mumbling something about there being no way out.

“Crucio!” a deep male, prominent voice roared and Neville fell backwards, twitching with agony as his mouth released high-pitched screams.

Hermione looked up. The only other person in the ring she was stuck in was a man with a mask on…a death eater.

“Stop it!” she screamed with all her might. She cared not that her wand was lost. What did she care if the death-eater killed her? She was going to die by the fire anyway. What was a few less minutes of life?

To her surprise the curse was released. Hermione glared at the dark man before falling to her knees beside her friend.

“Neville! Neville! Oh please be okay. You’ll be okay. Neville!” Hermione cried, tears falling down her slightly sweaty face. The heat of the fire was getting to her. If she was not burned first she was certain she would suffocate from the smoke.

“Hermione!” Neville said weakly, looking into her eyes for a few moments before he moved his gaze to the dark night sky.

“Neville! Neville! No! Don’t do this to me!” Hermione sobbed, shaking Neville’s lifeless arm. The light in his eyes was gone. He was dead.

She looked up at the man who was responsible for her friend’s death. Hatred and loathing filled every molecule within her. Sanity had long left her. She would get revenge.

“You killed him! You murdered him!” she roared, getting to her feet and starting towards him.

Down my wild desire,
I fell into a ring of fire

He pointed his wand at her, hoping to invoke fear. But there was no stopping her She did not really know how she was supposed to kill him when he had the advantage of a wand. Ripping him to pieces with her bare hands sounded awfully good.

Only a few paces away from him she called her fists, ready to strike at any part of him. Never had she had the urge to inflict pain like she did at that moment.

He knew she meant business. He knew her well enough to know magic would not stop her from seeking revenge. With this in mind there was only one thing left to do.

He pulled off the mask on his face and let it fall to the grass. His blonde hair stuck out in odd ends, his face was flushed from the heat and his watery blue eyes shone with the light of the fire.

Arm mid-air Hermione froze after a sharp intake of breath that signalled she was shocked. Her mouth had dropped open and her arm fell to her side. Screams of terror, pain and horror still filled the night air but the pair of them could hear none of that. Only silence, deathly silence.

I fell into a burning fire,
Going down, down, down and the flames went higher

Memory after memory flashed before Hermione’s eyes. It was almost like she was dying a reliving every moment she had in her life. But she was not dying…not physically anyway. Another part of her was dying. The love she held for Draco Malfoy, the flame that still burned for him, was slowly flickering into nothingness. It was dying.

She could see him looking after her in the middle of the night as she struggled through a horrid fever she had caught after staying out in the rain. His gentle touch of her forehead to check her temperature, the light caresses of his hand against her cheek as he whispered that she would be well again, oh Merlin she could see it all!

And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire

Nobody had known about the dangerous romance that had developed between them in their final year at Hogwarts. No, not Harry, not Ron, not Ginny, not Lucius, not even Dumbledore. It had been their dirty little secret. A secret Hermione had grown tired of keeping, just as Draco had grown tired of suppressed his wishes of joining the Dark side for good.

She began to back away from him, her eyes watering from the haze of smoke. He slowly moved towards her, his expression grave and pitiful.

Her heart throbbed within her chest painfully. A burning sensation took over and she was forced to inhale the smoke to try to cal her heart which she was swore was on fire.

“Hermione.” he whispered, just as he had that night he had looked after her. She closed her eyes and fought off the bittersweet memories that had affected her sleep for the past six months. He was going to tell her it would be alright. But she knew otherwise.

I fell into a burning ring of fire,
Going down, down, down and the flames went higher

She glanced around the ring of fire that trapped her. She wanted to run away until her legs were so sore that she had to crawl. She then took one look at Neville’s crumpled body, which was dangerously closer to the flames. Pain. Anger. Resentment.

“I hate you!” Hermione spat with vengeance. She meant every word she said. She meant it with all her heart, those three words.

He did not stop to take in the full meaning of these words. He had heard them so often in his lifetime that even Hermione telling him had no effect. Besides that he did not believe for a second that she really hated him.

And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

“You don’t mean that.” He said a little more loudly as more people screamed. That was when Hermione noticed that the rings of fire were closing in on them.

‘We’re going to die.’ Hermione thought in a panic. She looked at Draco and shook her head.

“This is what you left me for.” She stated, a crazy, maniac smile crossed her face, ‘This is what you wanted so badly.”

He said nothing but only stared at her.

She grew infuriated by his lack of responded, “You’ve killed us now. You’ve murdered is! This is what you wanted?” she roared. Her eyes flashed menacingly and the fire reflected in her eyes only added to her fiery appearance. Her hair, always untameable, looked ever more frazzled than ever before.

She looked wild.

The taste of love is sweet,
When hearts like our’s meet.

Her appearance reminded him of the moment they had fought over something so petty as a quill. Both as stubborn as each other, they bickered until the quill in question was broken and disposed of. If they both could not have it than neither of them could.

He remembered the taste of her lips when they had made up. So soft and sensual. It was like kissing a feather. They had never fought without being sorry afterwards. That was until that day they had parted for good.

I fell for you like a child.
Oh how the fire went wild

He craved her lips, her touch, craving her hands play with the tresses of his hair. He wanted her to know he was sorry, that he had made the wrong choice. That he should never have followed his father.

“Why Draco? Why did you do this?” Hermione asked. She just needed the answer to the burning question before she died.

He moved in closer and so did the fire. He placed his hand on her cheek and her eyelids fluttered to a close automatically. He caressed it with two fingers whilst he leaned in a planted butterfly kisses on her lips.

“Because I couldn’t have you killed by my father. If he knew…if anybody knew…you wanted to let it all out in the open and it was too dangerous.” He said, gazing deeply in her honey brown eyes.

She gave him a half-smiled, “More dangerous than the predicament we’re in now?”

He leaned in, kissed her more passionately and whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I fell into a burning ring of fire,
Going down, down, down and the flames went higher.

“If we had more time I’d still be angry with you.” Hermione half-sobbed, half sighed. They both looked at the flamed flickering around them.

It was nearly time.

And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

Tears, laughter, pain, happiness, fear, excitement all collided in one moment. The hear of the fire was so close now.

Draco’s arms held Hermione close to him as she began to shake and cry uncontrollably. She was no ready to die. She was too young.

“I love you.” Draco whispered in her ear. She looked him in the eye and realised he meant it. She kissed him and then hugged him tightly.

“I love you too.”

It burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

Screams reached their ears at a louder tone than ever before. The rings of fire closed in on everybody.

Voldemort chuckled as he watched his brilliant plan unfold successfully. He was the only one, apart from a handful of death eaters, who would survive.

Alive their love was forbidden and a dark secret. Finally it was all out in the open. In death they were together at last. Their love was unbreakable, like a ring of fire.

A/N - This is my second one-shot. I hope you like it :D The lyrics in case you were wondering, were written by June Carter and sung by Johnny Cash.
