Lily sat on the cold bathroom tiles with her head bent over the toilet. She had been throwing up every morning for the past two weeks and she knew what it meant. James was banging on the door again.
“Lily! Are you ok?”
“Fine.” She called back as cheerfully as she could.
“Are you sure? You sound sick.”
Sometimes he was clueless. “Just a stomach bug or something. I’m fine dear really.”
“Lily, you’re sick I can tell and I’m not leaving you alone. I’ll tell Alstor I can’t come in today then.”
“No James go, I’ll be fine I promise, just a little unwell, but could you stop by my office and tell Jill I won’t make it in today?”
“Ok.” He said. “But I’ll stop by at lunch to check up on you. Make sure you stay in bed and drink plenty of fluids and-”
“Yes James I promise. Now go or you’ll be late.”
Lily heard him walk down the stairs and she winced as the wind slammed the door behind him. Why could he never remember to just close it? She and James had got married last year and only just moved into to their house at Godric’s Hollow. Most of her friends couldn’t believe that she had actually married James-it wasn’t that long ago that she had despised him. She smiled at her memories of Hogwarts, when James had been teasing her in their fourth year and she pushed him in the black lake, the day on the train (to Lily’s horror and James’s delight) that they found out that they were Head Boy and Girl and their first date to Hogsmede on Valentines day.
Now she was pregnant and had no idea what to do. Her mother would be delighted, her father would be horrified, and James would be…well she didn’t know what his reaction would be. She had been avoiding telling him ever since she found out. She wasn’t even sure if she was ready for a baby yet.
She shook her head and heaved herself off the bathroom floor and headed straight for bed like James had suggested. It took her awhile, before she could put her thoughts aside and finally drift off into a peaceful sleep…
“LILY!!!” She was being shaken violently and snapped open her eyes to find a beaming Sirius Black standing over her. “James sent me over, said he couldn’t get away, Mad Eye’s been working them to the bone.”
She nodded groggily. “God you look terrible. James said you were sick, so I brought over some lunch incase you weren’t up to cooking.”
He held a dish under her nose. Lily took one sniff and threw the covers aside and sprinted to the bathroom to throw up. She stumbled out a few minutes later to find a horrified Sirius.
“Oh my god.” He said, stepping backwards, as if she was contagious. “You’re pregnant aren’t you?”
Lily considered denying it, but eventually nodded her head.
“Poor James.” He muttered.
“I beg you’re pardon.”
“Well it’s a fact of life isn’t it? Life gets boring when you have kids.”
“Thanks Sirius.” She said. He merely shrugged and began eating whatever he had brought over.
“I can’t believe he hasn’t told me though.”
“That’s because he doesn’t know and I’ll thank you not to tell him.”
On hearing this, Sirius almost choked on his food. “He doesn’t know!”
“James never was one for picking up on these types of things.” She told him.
“I think I need some time to think about this.” He told her, turning to go.
“Think about what? You’re not the one having a baby.”
“I need to think about the fact that I’m about to become a godfather. This is the most responsibility I’ve ever had, except if you count that cat I got, but let’s not talk about that.”
“Who says you’ll be the godfather anyway?” She yelled after him and winced once again as he too let the door slam behind him. Sometimes she thought he and James could be brothers.
Lily had been thinking about what she would tell James all afternoon. She knew she had to tell him now, because Sirius knew and Sirius was not renowned for keeping secrets. James would be heartbroken if he knew his best friend had found out before him.
She heard a loud POP from outside and the door open and close. James trudged up the stairs and into the bedroom. He gave Lily a kiss and sat on the bed to take his shoes off.
“Feeling better?” He asked.
“Mmm.” She said. Leaning over to massage his neck. “How was work?”
“Exhausting. We were this close to catching Malfoy, there’s no doubt now that he’s working for Voldemort, the ministry are just too blind to see it.”
She kissed his neck sympathetically. “You er didn’t talk to Sirius did you?”
“Huh? Oh yeah, I spoke to him briefly through our mirrors. He looked very pale, I think he might have caught you’re bug.”
She took a deep breath. This was it. “About that James.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t have a stomach bug.”
“What!” He said standing up. “ Is it something worse? Should you go to St Mungo’s for a checkup?”
“No James I’m fine, but I think you should sit down, I have to tell you something.”
He frowned, but sat down on the bed with her and held her hand comfortingly. “Lily what is it? You can tell me. Did Petunia die, because I mean you never really liked her?” Lily burst into tears. “Ok I’m sorry. Lils what’s wrong?”
“I’m pregnant.” She sobbed. James looked completely stunned.
“Wait what?”
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, I just didn’t know how you would react. I know you’re probably not ready for a baby, and I completely understand that, but I’m not getting rid of it and-”
“Lily! Are you serious? That’s…wonderful.”
She looked up. “You mean it?”
He nodded and she flung her arms around him, all her fears just melting away. When they broke apart, James rubbed her stomach.
“Hey little guy. I promise we won’t name you after Sirius, no matter how much of an argument he puts up, it’s just not a great name-but don’t tell him that.”
Lily laughed. “How do you know it’s a boy?”
“Because I just do. It’s going to be a boy, and he’ll be the greatest wizard the world has ever known.”
