It’s currently bitterly cold in the greenhouses, I stand here hugging my thick cloak to my to my chest, trying to squash out the last remnants of the cold air. To make matters worse, Professor Sprout is talking to us about the Alabastron thieving vine.
“Now get into partners! I want all these seedlings planted up by the end of the lesson!” barked Professor Sprout, there was a bit of grumbling as people partnered up, I was about to go find Chris, the other weirdo who I always partnered, when none other than Sirius Black stood next to me.
“Partner?” he asked.
“No.” I answered shortly.
“Who were you planning on going with then?” he asked wickedly.
“Why? don’t you think anyone wants to go with me?” I retorted mildly.
“Did I say that? No I just merely thought you might need a partner seeing as James is with Chris,” he said brightly. I glanced over at a grumpy looking Potter and a surly looking Chris.
“I think a congratulations is in order,” I continued as I grabbed one of the seedlings (rather aggressively I might add) and shoved it into the dirt of a large pot.
“Why thankyou, it was one of my more simple plans, but nevertheless still just as effective,” he added doing the same as I.
“So Black what has caused the sudden interest in me? Is it my radiant blue eyes, my luxurious dark hair, the fact that I despise you and you little cronies?” I asked moodily. It frustrated me that I couldn’t be doing this with Chris, in silence, or swapping polite annotations about our favourite bands. Once I even made him laugh, it was incredible.
But alas Sirius is still rambling away.
“Well I can’t say those were my initial thoughts, but now that your mention it they do help, but anyway back to the real reason. I was when you hexed that Slytherin, Burke, for bullying a first year,” he answered simply. I blushed scarlet, that was one of my more noble doings.
“So Black goes for the girl who does good deeds, well I am shocked,” I replied quickly.
“Why is Miss Powell blushing?” he asked daringly.
I threw dirt in his face.
“In Your dreams!” I exclaimed, it was meant to be a joke but I half coughed in that sentenced so it sounded evil and aggressive.
“What the? What the hell was that for? All I asked was a simple question!” he yelled, all previous flirting gone.
“What is going on here?” questioned Professor Sprout her eyes darting between me and Sirius.
“Nothing apart from my wish to work alone,” I said coldly, well least I can get rid of Black.
“Fine, Black you go with Potter and Bluevark and Powell work at this bench by yourself,” she ordered before turning back to talking sweetly with Evans, oh how I loathe Evans, I could make a list about all of Evans bad faults, or perhaps write it all over a picture of her then throw darts at it to show my utter loathing.
I moved over to my bench and didn’t look back at Sirius who was staring at me, it doesn’t matter if he has a thing for me, it’ll soon pass. Sirius has the attention span of about a hyperactive three year old.
As soon as the lesson finished I hurried out of there and straight to recess.
“Feisty aren’t we Powell?” asked Sirius as he sat down next to me in the great hall, I had tried to sit in between a group of third years, begging them to hide me but they merely took one glance at me and moved away. Damn my alternativeness, damn my need to break from the crowd! Get it? I was trying to hide in a crowd, yet at the same time I’m trying to break from it…that was a good one.
“Go away Black, haven’t you got the message? I don’t like you and I don’t want to have to experience your incredibly bland and predictable conversation,” I replied, eating my salad and trying to read my book at the same to time…until someone rudely snapped it shut.
“Hey!” I yelled furiously. There is nothing worse when someone closes your page when you haven’t placed your bookmark in, it should be punishable by law.
“Don’t you know it’s rude to not look at someone when their talking to you?” he asked teasingly.
“What if they’re talking to you against your will?” I retorted, summoning back my book with a flick of my wand and trying, desperately to find the page I had been reading.
“Look, let’s just pretend that we both know we like each other and suggest the obvious…would you go on a date with me?” he asked.
“No.” I answered crisply.
“Why not?”
“Because you stole my book!” I answered, isn’t that obvious?
“Aww, come on don’t be difficult,” he said jovially elbowing me in the side.
Oh wrong move.
I grabbed the front of his robes like a flash of lightning.
“Touch me again or I might do something I regret,” I whispered venomously into his face. I shoved him back, refusing to look into his shocked expression and grabbed my book as I headed out of the hall, half of Gryffindor table staring at me.
I was not rid of him yet though, he decided to sit next to me in charms.
Furious I kept my mind focussed on Professor Flitwick as he squeaked to the class about our NEWTs.
“Hey Powell, can I borrow your notes?” he asked as he rocked back on his chair.
“No.”
“Hey Powell, can I borrow a quill?”
“No.”
“Hey Powell…”
It just went on and on like a broken record.
“For the last God damn time no!” I screeched standing up in my chair and getting to ready to punch his lights out.
“Miss Powell!” piped Professor Flitwick bewildered.
“Sorry Professor…I dosed off, didn’t realise what I was doing,” I mumbled seating myself again next to a smirking Sirius. I breathed heavily, nobody has ever toyed with my emotions the way he does. I sat there my hands trembling uncontrollably as I watched Professor Flitwick flicking his wand, demonstrating to the class a simple charm to make a chair dance along the floor.
“Hey Powell, I really think you need to get control of that anger of yours, it’s going to lead you into trouble one day.” He said whispering into my ear.
“No…it’s only going to give you a black eye,” I hissed back.
“Aww come now Powell show some manners,” he grinned, winking.
“I’m polite to people I like, which unfortunately isn’t a lot of people so everybody seems to mistake me for being incredibly rude,” I supplied irritably as I doodled in my book.
“So you like me? Oh I’m flattered really,” he responded clasping his hands.
“No.” I replied shortly.
“Was that sarcasm I hear, does Miss Powell really like me?” he asked mockingly.
“No sarcasm, I don’t like you, never have and don’t plan to in the near future…maybe when I’m old and frail I’ll use you to do my washing but other than that…no.” I droned.
“Damn I thought we were making progress,” he quipped sardonically.
“Must have been your imagination,” I replied so bored out of my mind that even doodling couldn’t sustain me.
Then the sweet glorious bell rang and I don’t believe I have ever grabbed my books and exited a room faster.
“Hey Powell wait up!” and I have never ran faster, I reached the portrait hole out of breath and screaming the password at her.
“Freaking Hopscotch! Hopscotch!” I yelled, she opened the door with a disgruntled humph and I scrambled in and ran onto the stairs…sitting down on the cold steps, catching my breath, when Sirius appeared in front of me.
“If I didn’t know better I’d say you were avoiding me,” he told me smiling one of his wicked smiles. If I never have to see that smile again I’ll be a very happy person.
“Where’d you get that idea from?” I asked sarcastically.
“Oh nowhere,” he answered airily.
“Now Powell, are you going to stay up there all night and starve to death…or are you going to come with me and get something to eat?” he asked holding out hi arm.
“I think I’ll stay here thanks,” I answered moodily.
“Damn it Powell! Just get down the stairs!” he snapped angrily.
“No!” I could be very stubborn sometimes, there was a large crowd congregating around us and I didn’t want to look like I was weak. Also Sirius is so spoilt and used to having what he wants that I couldn’t bear to give him the satisfaction of having me.
“What’s going on here?” queried an innocent voice that made me shudder. In short. Evans.
“Hello Evans I’m just taking Miss Powell here to dinner,” he answered jovially and staring at me pointedly.
“No. You. Are. Not.” I growled through gritted teeth.
“Well I think that settles it Black, she’s obviously not going to dinner with you, so you can leave her alone,” stated Lily simply, starting to climb the stairs.
Sirius scowled behind her.
“Fine if you’re going to be like that…accio Miss Powell!” he yelled flicking his wand at me.
I uttered a silent scream as I landed softly in his arms.
“Black! Put me down now!” I screeched, kicking and writhing.
People were laughing as he continued to walk, somewhat awkwardly through the portrait hole and out through the corridors, all the while me kicking and threatening him as he went.
“Oh put a sock in it Powell,” as we began to see people walking the corridors. Surprisingly I shut up and I rested gently in his arms, feeling quite content.
“So Powell I think it’s time for a bit of question answer,” he said grinning slyly.
“Whatever,” I replied.
“Ok…Full name?”
“Rose Isobel Powell,” I answered short and crisp.
“Mother’s name?”
“Beth.”
“Father’s name?”
“Dunno,”
“Care to elaborate?”
“No.”
“Er…Siblings?”
“Nope,”
“How tall are you?”
“177cm”
“Favourite colour?”
“Yellow.”
“Wow, I didn’t think it would be quite so cheery,”
I slapped him.
“Ok, ok…favourite food?”
“Marmalade on toast,”
“Really?
“Yes.”
“I didn’t realise it would be something so plain.”
“Of course you didn’t,”
“Favourite time of the year?”
“Summer.”
“Why?”
“Because I like lying in the sunshine and my mum takes me to Umbria this place in Italy where there are all these bright red poppies.” I answered kind of dreamily.
“Hmm, I’ll keep that one in mind…What’s the one time/place you can never wait for?”
I hesitated slightly “The holidays,”
“Did I hear a slight hesitation?”
“No.”
“Of course. Favourite subject?”
“Transfiguration,”
“I always knew you were tuff,”
“Are you implying something?
“Never.”
“Ok…your plans after school?”
“To play quidditch professionally,”
“What!”
“Just kidding, I want to become an Author…strange I know, but if not that then I’ll be an auror…just so I can try out my Dr Martins on those death eaters,”
“What are Dr Martins?”
“Shoes,”
“Ah well that explains everything,”
“Now have you ever been kissed?
“Yes.”
“You have?” he asked mildly surprised.
“Why did you think I’m a social outcast out of school as well? No I used to have a boyfriend, though unfortunately he was an arsehole,”
“Naturally,”
“Ok my turn…Full name?”
“Sirius Erasmus Black.”
“Bleur, Erasmus.”
“Hey!”
“Ok…Siblings?”
“Yes a brother,” he replied somewhat bitterly.
“Care to go on?”
“He’s a coward, nothing more to say.”
“Why?”
“Next question,”
“Height?”
“192cm”
“Well you are a tall one,”
“I always knew I’d be destined for great things,”
“Whatever,”
“Favourite colour?”
“Why red and gold of course!”
“Of course so very patriotic of you,”
“Continue please, we’re starting to reach the great hall,”
“Favourite food,”
“Roast Lamb, with roast potatoes,”
“I wouldn’t expect anything different, now Favourite season?”
“Spring.”
“Why?”
“Because I come back to Hogwarts,” I suddenly felt a slight twang of pity.
“Ok if you could be in one other house, what would it be?”
“Hufflepuff.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, Hufflepuff’s are all just and loyal, Ravenclaw’s are stuck up and Slytherin’s are slime,”
“I never thought of it that way,”
“I am just so brilliant.”
With that I scrambled out of his arms, dusted myself off and walked into the great hall, feeling something that I definitely didn’t want to feel…
