“Good afternoon, students, teachers, parents,” began Dumbledore as he steps up to the podium. “We are here to see the graduation of our class of 1977.”
Everyone clapped. Lily looked out into the crowed, but didn’t see her parents face. She knew she wouldn’t. They died last year. She wished they were here. James had obviously seen Lily’s expression because he squeezed her hands and smiled at her.
“If we could have all of out graduating students stand up please,” Dumbledore said.
The seventh years stood up. Everyone clapped. McGonagall stood up and came over to the podium where Dumbledore stood. She unrolled a piece of parchment and adjusted her glasses.
“Now, when I call your name, please come up, shake Dumbledore’s, mine, and the other teacher’s hands, and then go sit back down, thank you,” her voice rang out.
Lily took a deep breath and looked over at James. He looked very pale and more nervous than her. He caught her eye and tried to smile, but it ended looking like he was in pain. This made her ease down a bit.
“Lily Evans,” she heard McGonagall’s voice echo through the Great Hall.
There was a loud cheer as she walked up the seven steps to where the teachers were sitting. They all stood to her, and everyone took off their hats. She shook Dumbledore’s hand, then Professor McGonagall’s, then the rest of the staff. The stopped when she came to Professor Slughorn.
“I am going to miss you child,” he said with a tear in his eye.
Lily could only nod, and then walked offstage, back to her seat. She took a deep breath of relief. One by one, all the seventh years went up to get their hands shaken by their professors. When it was Sirius’s turn, after he has shaken everyone’s hand, he turned to the audience and did a loud cheer. Everyone laughed. Remus walked quickly, and almost tripped going offstage.
When it was James’s turn, Lily saw him almost to the point of tears when he came to sit back down. There were only a few left after Peter came running from the stage. After the last student had been called, Dumbledore walked toward the podium. Everyone clapped.
“Well, I have to say, I am very proud of all of you. And I am very sad to see all of you go. You are always welcome here; I want you to know that. Thank you for these great seven years here at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Now, I want you all to stand. And I want to get one more applause for you all.”
As Lily stood their, a silent tear rolled down her cheek. A happy, yet sad one. She looked around at the parents and other students she would not be seeing for a long time. She took a breath and then sat back down.
“Now, we will have a feast in about ten minutes for these wonderful students. Parents are welcome to stay. Congratulations, you are now adults of the Wizarding World.”
Everyone cheered loudly. James grabbed Lily by the hand. She looked at him.
“Come on,” he said, his voice shaking with nervousness. “There is someone I want you to meet.”
James led her through the crowds of students and parents, until they came to a couple sitting down in the back. Lily knew who they were immediately. The tall man looked like James, except and older version. And James didn’t have his eyes. He had his mother’s hazel eyes. His mother, who was shorter than the other two, was skinny and beautiful. She had these hazel eyes that dug deep into you like James’s did. Her smile and his smile were exactly the same. They were both aging, yet still looked like they had a lot of life in them. When they saw James and Lily coming, the women jumped up and hugged James. He blushed.
“Hey mum,” James said as Mrs. Potter finally let go of him. “I would like you to meet Lily Evans.”
“Oh so this is the girl you’ve been talking about,” his mother said eying Lily, with a smile.
James nodded. Mrs. Potter came and gave Lily a hug.
“It truly is nice to meet you,” Lily said in a small voice.
“The pleasure is all ours,” Mr. Potter said coming and giving her a hug too.
“Yes, yes, Jamsie has told us so much about you,” Mrs. Potter said with a grin making James blush.
“MUM,” James mumbled.
“Nonsense dear,” she said not paying him any attention. “Are your mother and father here dear, I must-” she began but was cut off by a look James had given her.
“We really must be going now, right Lily?” James said tugging on her sleeve.
“Oh yea, we…. I think Dumbledore wants to get a picture of use,” Lily said in search of Dumbledore’s hat.”
“Alright, but you must come over this summer,” Mrs. Potter said giving each of them a hug.
“Alright, that sounds really nice,” Lily said before James pulled them away.
They met up with Remus, Sirius, Raylien, Payton, Alice, and Frank again. Everyone decided to go outside to sit under their normal tree by the lake.
“I love your parents,” Lily said as they sat down under the shady tree.
“I am so sorry,” James said closing his eyes and shaking his head.
“For what, they seem like the nicest people ever,” Lily said putting his face in her hands. “Don’t worry about that, James. That was in the past. What matter now, is well…now.”
James laughed a little. He looked into her eyes and smiled. He still seemed nervous about something. Lily looked around at everyone. They all seemed to be looking a bit nervous. There was something they weren’t telling her. And she was going to find out what. Lily stood up.
“Am I missing something here?” she said making everyone look at her with a bad acting confusion.
“Oh, no, nothing at all,” Sirius said, trying to sound nonchalantly.
“Give it up, I know there is something you guys aren’t telling me; now what is it?”
She looked from Sirius to Remus to Raylien to Payton, and then finally to James, who seemed to look even paler. She rolled her eyes and then sat back down. She crossed her arms and pouted her lip.
“Fine if you don’t want to tell me, I didn’t want to know anyway,” Lily said dryly.
“Uh, James could I talk to you for a second,” Sirius said suddenly.
“Su..Sure,” James stuttered, getting up and walking away with Sirius.
“Ok you guys, spill the beans,” Lily said when James and Sirius were far enough away so that they wouldn’t hear. “What’s going on?”
“So how ‘bout this weather we’re having, crazy ain’t it?” Payton said looking up at the sky.
“Very much so, don’t you think Remus?” Raylien added hitting him slightly on the arm.
“Ouch, uh yea….very dismal,” he replied rubbing his arm.
“Oh lay off it! And just tell me already before I jinx you! WHAT IS GOING ON!!?!?!”
“Oh, nothing, nothing at all,” Remus said trying not to catch Lily’s eye.
“Fine, I didn’t want to know anyway,” Lily remarked as James and Sirius came and joined them.
“So, have a nice chat?” Raylien asked trying to change the subject.
“What? Oh yea, very nice,” James said still not looking Lily straight in the eyes.
After a while, Lily gave up on trying to figure out what they were hiding. She sat quietly, listening to Remus, James and Sirius telling of their ingenious pranks to the girls. Occasionally Lily would roll her eyes at something they said, and Sirius would look appalled but then went back to telling his story.
“…and then, we turned all of the Slytherin’s hair red and black, remember?” Sirius said through fits of laughter. Then he added to Lily, “James got the red hair idea from you. You know, that time period of when he was totally obsessed with you.”
James blushed and turned away.
“Don’t you think we should go up to the castle now?” he said standing up and dusting off his robes. “I bet they are about to start the feast. And we can’t miss it!”
Everyone agreed and got up. When they began walking back James took Lily’s hand and they walked slower than everyone else. He was shaking slightly. Lily smiled into his eyes. He did the same. James stopped walking.
“Lily,” he said as he took a deep breath. “Lily, I have loved you for almost my whole life. And I don’t think I can ever live without you again. When we were apart, I felt like I had died. I don’t want to feel like that ever again.”
Lily took a deep breath and smiled.
“I love you too James,” she whispered.
He smiled and let go of her hand. He stuck one of his hands in his robes and dug around for a minute. When he found what he was looking for he smiled and got down on one knee. Lily stopped breathing for a moment. Tears began to fall from her eyes.
“Lily, I can’t live without you. I know I can’t. And I hope you can’t live without me. I love you.”
Tears began to fall down his cheeks. He took her hand, which was shaking.
“Lily Evans, will you make me happy? Will you marry me?”
She started to cry. Then she smiled and looked into his eyes. They were true and full of love.
“Yes,” she cried. “I will marry you James Potter.”
James slipped the ring on her finger. It was a gold band with an emerald stone in the middle. Lily looked at it and smiled even wider. She bent down to where he was kneeling. She leaned in and they kissed. This time, their kiss was almost like magic.
“I love you Lily Evans Potter,” James said once they had broken apart.
“Maybe I’m crazy, but I think I love you too,” Lily said with a half laugh.
