Chapter 5: Mommy and Daddy
Jami woke up almost as soon as Harry finished his sentence and Ginny took Erin to Jami’s room. Hermione, Ron and Harry sat down in the living room and Hermione began her tale wearily. When she finished, Harry looked sad, angry, and shocked all at the same time, his face twisted into a very painful grimace.
“What are you going to do?” Harry asked softly.
“I don’t know.” Hermione said tearfully, tears suddely leaping to her throat. She excused herself with a sob, claiming the bathroom.
“You shouldn’t stay at you house. Malfoy obviously knows where it is.” Ginny stated as she entered the room, eyes locked on the bathroom door.
“Well where else could we stay? And, no Harry, we are not staying here.” Hermione called from the loo when Harry opened his mouth.
“Yeah, we wouldn’t want to put your family in danger.” Ron said, watchign the door as if wondering what his wife was doing.
“Harry and Ron are Aurors!” Ginny interjected.
“I don’t care! I would never forgive myself if any of you guys got hurt!” Hermione said, face tear-streaked as she re-entered the room.
“Herm-" Harry started but Hermione cut him off.
“NO. That’s final.”
“Fine, but you should go to the Ministry with this.” Harry said, looking disgruntled.
“Why didn’t I think of that!” Ron said, “Hermione, we need to tell the ministry and sue Malfoy for custody of Erin!”
“You want to adopt her? Oh, Ron I was hoping you would! But how do we do it?” Hermione asked, her face lighting up.
“I don’t know but Harry and I can figure it out when we go into work on Monday.” Ron answered, Hermione snuggled against his chest and he wrapped his arms comfortingly around her.
“And until then?” Ginny asked.
“We could stay at a muggle hotel,” Hermione suggested only to receive confused looks from the other three.
“A hotel is a place that muggles stay when they go on vacation or something. Like the Leaky Cauldron.” Hermione explained in exhaspiration.
“Oh.” They answered, each cocking an eyebrow.
“Or,” Harry started, “You could—"
“We are not staying here!” Ron said firmly.
“Yeah, and if you were smart you should leave your house too.” Hermione said slowly as if she were realizing something.
“What?” Ginny said.
“Well, when Malfoy realizes that we are not at our house where is he going to think that we are?”
“At Harry and Ginny’s” Ron said with a scared look.
“Oh my God you’re right. Harry we can’t stay here.” Ginny said fearfully. Hermione couldn’t take it anymore. She was putting everyone in danger! Damn that Malfoy! Why can’t he leave Erin alone? Hermione started to cry and Ron hugged her.
“What’s wrong Hermione?” Ginny asked gently.
“I hate this, you guys are in trouble and its all my fault!”
“Hermione! How dare you say that!? Erin needs you and Ron and it’s not your fault at all. It’s Malfoy’s!” Ginny exclaimed. Hermione wiped her tears away.
“You’re right. We need to get going though.”
“Yeah, lets meet in the Leaky Cauldron at three.” Harry said.
“Alright.” Hermione agreed.
“I’ll get Erin.” Ron said with a grin and walked to Jami’s room. He emerged with Erin walking beside him and Jami hanging onto his left leg yelling, “EWRIN NO GO! EWRIN NO GO!” Ron looked over at Harry and Ginny hopelessly, eyes pleading as the toddler sunk her teeth into his leg. They were barely able to hold back their laughter; Ginny was able to speak first and told her daughter matter of factly, “ Jami, honey, you will see Erin in a few hours.”
“No me see now!” Jami cried.
“Well the faster you let go of Uncle Ron the faster you can see Erin again.” Harry tried.
“I go too!” Jami said and let go of Ron and tackled Erin. They landed on the ground with Jami gripping Erin around the waist. Ron started laughing but was able to cover it up as a cough.
“Come on, Jami. If you do then Erin can spend the night with us tonight.” Ginny bribed.
“Yes!” Jami rolled off of Erin smiling.
“Well, then I guess we are free to go now, come on. We have lots of packing to do.” Hermione said and hoisted herself off of the couch.
“How come you are packing?” Erin asked Ron when they got home.
“Well, because, er, you tell her Hermione,” He answered.
“We are going to stay in a big building with Jami and her family. It’s going to be like a big sleepover.” Hermione invented, She didn’t think Erin needed to worry about the real situation.
“Really! This is awesome! Thank you!” Erin grabbed Hermione’s legs and hugged them. Hermione half smiled.
“No problem. Why don’t you go get your stuff together?” Erin let go of Hermione and hugged Ron’s legs. Then she went to pack her stuff but stopped in the doorframe and turned around.
“Um…is it okay if I call you Mommy and Ron, Daddy?” She asked nervously. Hermione didn’t know what to say, and neither did Ron who froze halfway though folding a shirt. Ron and Hermione looked at each other, Ron's eyes soft.
“Of course.” Hermione said as her eyes started to water a bit. Erin smiled and skipped down the hall to the room where they kept her clothes and stuff. Hermione looked over at Ron.
“She is so cute.” Ron said.
“Yeah, she’s as cute as you are.” Hermione answered.
“I am so glad to be back.” Ron said snaking his arms around Hermione, she pressd herself against him, feeling warmth radiating off him.
“That makes two of—" Hermione was interrupted by a loud scream from down the hall.
Hermione and Ron ran down the hall as fast as they could. They looked around the room but didn’t see the little blonde head they had been expecting.
“Erin?” Hermione gasped.
“Erin!” Ron called. Then he saw that the window was open. He walked over to it, Hermione at his heels. They looked down and at the sidewalk but all the saw was a tall man in a black hat and topcoat walking by. Just then the heard a cry from the closet to their left. Ron was closest so he swung the closet door open his wand at the ready.
Ron lowered his wand and reached into the closet and picked up Erin who was in the corner crying.
“Erin!” Hermione said and snatched her from her husband’s arms. Erin cuddled close to Hermione.
“What happened?” Ron asked.
“I opened… the window and… saw the… man!” Erin said between sobs.
“What man?” Hermione asked gently.
“The man in the hat and jacket!” Erin said pointing toward the window. Ron looked back out the window but the man with the top hat and coat had long gone.
“Do you know him?” Ron inquired.
“Yes! That was Dayco!” Erin said frantically
